Nombre Frederick Catherwood, rara vez se habla solo. Su afirmación bastante peculiar a la fama deriva de su asociación con John Lloyd Stephens, el "padre de la arqueología maya", pero que eran un equipo en todos los sentidos de la palabra. La mayoría de las personas interesadas en los mayas han oído hablar de Stephens y Catherwood, o por lo menos el libro de viajes del siglo 19, Incidentes de viaje en la península de Yucatán (1842) escrito por Stephens, con ilustraciones de Catherwood. En 1839, Stephens decidió investigar personalmente el creciente número de informes de civilizaciones perdidas en la selva de Yucatán. Él ya era un escritor de viajes muy conocida, y su invitación a Catherwood para unirse a él se hizo a un hombre igualmente respetado en su campo. Mientras Stephens escribió sobre las ciudades de la antigüedad, Catherwood los llevó. Nacido Inglaterra en 1799, Frederick Catherwood, estudió arquitectura, dibujo y pintura en la Real Academia, y la arquitectura clásica y la escultura en Italia, Sicilia y Grecia. Después de completar sus estudios, viajó por todo el este, haciendo dibujos a escala de las antigüedades de Egipto, Arabia y la Tierra Santa. Whittier House donor letter and list from Frederick P. Craig
No full textWhittier House scrapbooks document Whittier House programs, events, and anniversary celebrations through newspaper clippings, lecture fliers, newsletters, event programs, and ticket stubs. Newspaper clippings are primarily from the Jersey Journal. There is also Whittier House fundraising materials, including pamphlets, appeal letters, brochures, and postcards. The Whittier House Social Settlement, the first settlement house in New Jersey, was established in Jersey City, N.J. (Hudson County) in 1894. Founded by Cornelia Foster Bradford, who would remain with the organization as headworker until 1926, Whittier House was based on the settlement house, Toynbee Hall, in England. Whittier House provided various recreational and educational programs, along with much needed social services, for the immigrant populations of Jersey City. Many of these successful services were used as models for large-scale social reform movements through the state. In 1935, the Whittier House was taken over by the Boys' Club of Jersey City

No full textThe pages of this manuscript fragment are numbered 39 and 40 [a note on the recto states that these correspond to 296 in the printed text]; a pencil note at the top of the recto attributes the work to Captain Frederick Marryat [the novel alluded to may have been Marryat\u27s _Snarleyyow, or, The Dog Fiend_ (1837)].A popular novelist and author of children\u27s adventure fiction like _Masterman Ready_ (1841), a castaway tale, Marryat entered the navy as a teenager and by 1815 had risen to the rank of commander. He was active in the Anglo-Burmese war in 1823, after which he was made a CB and awarded the gold medal of the Royal Humane Society; Marryat was made a fellow of the Royal Society for his innovations in signaling
