The “lost” Venetian city of Candia in some 16th- and 17th-century visual and written documents
Mediterranean cities maintain traces of their past despite more recent urban transformations. The paper focuses on the town of Candia, a strategic site in Venice’s maritime domain (1207-1669). After extensive urban demolition and reconstruction, the memory of Venetian Candia survives in its road network, place names, and archaeological remains. Some maps and cadastral sources of the early modern period highlight known and less-known elements of its lost urban landscape

This paper analyses the policy and the strategies of the court and the aristocracy to increase the
aspectum nobilem of the city of Vienna through the construction of sumptuous buildings. While
the old city within the walls and the surrounding suburbs were seen as two complementary units
as early as the mid-17th century, only after the second Turkish siege of Vienna (1683) was there an
extraordinary increase in suburban palaces. The cartography reflects this changed image
