incapacità – percepita o meno – a
governare questo information overload.
Cosa accade perciò quando, come nel
caso di WikiLeaks, le informazioni
prive di un’intermediazione sono
disponibili ai cittadini/utenti?
E, soprattutto, come si modificano i
concetti di responsabilità ed etica per i
giornalisti
Horizontal vs vertical growth. Understanding latent patterns of urban expansion in large metropolitan regions
Building activity at the metropolitan scale reflects socioeconomic transformations increasingly dependent on place-specific factors. The present study investigates height profile and age of buildings over 12 time intervals (1910s–2010s) in Greece, a country experiencing particularly complex urban cycles in the last century, with the aim to identify distinctive forces fueling vertical and horizontal urban expansion. To discriminate vertical from horizontal expansion, a new indicator of urban growth (‘Vertical-to-Horizontal Growth’ ratio, VHG) was proposed and used to identify the dominant socioeconomic profile underlying local-scale urbanization processes. Results of this study contribute to discriminate intense vertical expansion coinciding with population growth in large urban areas (Athens, Salonika, Iraklio) from moderate horizontal expansion around medium-rank cities, along coastal areas and in internal lowlands with small compact towns. Greek municipalities display spatial patterns of building activity that reflect the distinct impact of geographical gradients, divergent responses to market stimuli and planning constraints. As in other European countries, urban cycles in Greece were heterogeneous over space, justifying a joint analysis of intensity and spatial direction of metropolitan growth
Computational characterization of alternative splicing events in coding and non-coding genes
Alternative splicing (AS) represents an effective way to expand the proteome, and thus the biological complexity, without having to create and evolve new genes. Anecdotal evidence of the involvement of alternative splicing in the regulation of protein-protein interactions has been reported by several studies. AS events have been shown to significantly occur in regions where a protein interaction domain or a short linear motif is present. Several AS variants show partial or complete loss of interface residues, suggesting that AS can play a major role in the interaction regulation by selectively targeting the protein binding sites. In the first part of my PhD work I performed a statistical analysis of the alternative splicing of a non-redundant data set of human protein-protein interfaces known at molecular level to determine the importance of this way of modulation of protein-protein interactions through AS. I demonstrated that the alternative splicingmediated partial removal of both heterodimeric and homodimeric binding sites occurs at lower frequencies than expected, and this holds true even if I consider only those isoforms whose sequence is less different from that of the canonical protein and which therefore allow to selectively regulate functional regions of the protein. On the other hand, large removals of the binding site are not significantly prevented, possibly because they are associated to drastic structural changes of the protein. The observed protection of the binding sites from AS is not preferentially directed towards putative hot spot interface residues, and is widespread to all protein functional classes. Using the same procedure as that applied for proteinprotein interactions, I also evaluated the importance of AS-mediated removal of protein-ligand binding sites, obtained from three-dimensional structures of human proteins. Again, I observed that AS tends to avoid partial removal of such sites, while being quite indifferent to complete or near-complete deletions. This tendency does not depend on the size of the binding site. The choice of the AS pattern of a gene is thus conditioned by constraints imposed by the three-dimensional structure of the protein products.
Alternative splicing is not observed only in protein-coding genes: many long non-coding RNA (lncRNAs) have two or more transcript isoforms. Since these transcripts are not translated, the differential usage of splice sites cannot be influenced by structural constraints, except for those related to the RNA folding. Even if AS occurs in about a quarter of lncRNA genes, little is known about its role in the regulation of lncRNA function and stability, mainly because few lncRNAs have been functionally characterized. The aim of the second half of my PhD work was to study the alternative splicing of lncRNA genes. First, I analyzed the evolutionary conservation of lncRNA alternatively spliced sequences (and their flanking regions) and I found that their pattern of conservation is similar to that showed in protein-coding genes; this suggests that AS of lncRNA genes is as important as that of protein-coding genes, at least from an evolutionary standpoint. To study the impact of AS on lncRNA functional sites, I assembled a data set of proteinRNA interaction sites by reanalysing published CLIP-Seq, RIP-Seq and RIPChip experiments. The results of this reanalysis work will be stored in a public database of protein-RNA interactions detected via high-throughput methods
Socioeconomic development, demographic dynamics and forest fires in Italy, 1961-2017: A time-series analysis
Empirical studies investigating long-term trends in wildfires' frequency and severity have been relatively scarce in Europe. Number of fire events, total burnt area and average fire size were studied between 1961 and 2017 in Italy with the aim to identify homogeneous time periods with similar wildfire frequency and severity and correlate them with the background socioeconomic context. Fire attributes had a diverging behavior over time: the number of fires was the highest in the 1970s and the early 1980s; total burnt area was relatively more constant over time with a peak in the 1980s; and, finally, average fire size decreased quite homogeneously from the peak observed in the 1960s and early 1970s. The number of fires and average fire size were significantly influenced by the value of the same variable one year before. Investigating long-term historical outlines of forest fires, a mixed approach based on time-series statistical analysis, multivariate techniques and regressive models intended to define changes in fire regimes and socioeconomic development. In fact, the comparative valuation of the socioeconomic aspects and wildfire trends can reveal a key step to recognizing mitigation and preventive possibilities. Through a multivariate analysis, a substantial difference in the socioeconomic profile can emerge by decade, evidencing a (more or less) rapid socioeconomic development in relation to the evolution of forest fires in Italy

If the sky falls we shall catch larks: Rethinking Land Quality and Desertification Risk into a Regional Science Framework
Land Degradation and Desertification are recognized as leading processes of natural resource depletion and key issues in the political agenda for the 21st century. The objective of this short paper is to specifically contribute to the debate on Mediterranean desertification from the regional science perspective, trying to (re)think the importance of unifying concepts (process, region, scale, sustainability and policy) to better understanding the dynamic phenomena of land degradation. Conclusions summarize the original 'vision' proposed in this study and provide a fresh outlook on future research on desertification risk and its drivers in developed countries
