Our study, which is titled: The Edition Critique of Mehmet Talib-i Uskudari`s Divance* contains the biography of Mehmet Talib-i Uskudari who was a Celvetiyye Tariqa** sheikh and a close study of Uskudari`s different works and poems that are reflective of Islamic mysticism. At the initiation of the study, an introduction to Islamic mysticism and its reflections on Turkish literature along with a brief overview of the general characteristics of the Islamic mystic literature in 17th century, which is the period of time Mehmet Talib Efendi lived, is presented. The information on the life story of Mehmet Talib Efendi is compiled under the headings of His birth, name and his mahlas***; His Tariqa and His Tariqa sheikhs; His death and His works. The study of his Divance was carried out in two stages. Initially, the Divance was first scrutinized in terms of method; the types of poems and the methods that were adopted by the author in the creation of poems; meter, rhyme, language and style specifications that can be found within the respective bodies of these poems were detailed. While studying the Divance from the aspect of its contents, the verses in Quran and Hadiths**** that were pointed out in poems and Sufism related components of the poems such as hierarchical ranks and positions within the Sufi belief system were explained in numbered footnotes. Those idioms, which were determined to be within the texts, were written in alphabetical order and the numbers of the poems that those idioms are associated with were separately maintained. The poems within the Divance were translated into Latin alphabet with transcription system. The table of the transcription system is annexed to the study. Finally, a bibliography was prepared for the works that were utilized during the preparation of this study. * Divance: Poem books of poets. Speakers: Dr Sayjda Talib (lead author), Teaching Fellow, Lancaster University with Dr Stacey Noble Senior Teaching Associate, Lancaster University Talib and Noble (2018) Abstract - “This paper details the experiences of embedding bespoke employability modules within the accounting and finance curriculum at Lancaster Unviersity and also provides a take on the role of the Academic Employability Champion, a new departmental ‘curriculum facing’ post for academic staff. The paper begins by outlining the pedagogical gaps faced by the department with increasing anecdotal employer feedback that graduates were not ‘desk ready’. The paper then outlines the consultation process with the faculty/central careers team and the initial provision of AcF.150 and AcF.350, the employability modules. Changes to the module in the five years which it has been operational include greater involvement with employers, intensive student conferences and workshops, integration of cutting edge technology (e.g. video interview simulations and business games). The paper ends with a discussion on the feedback from students, staff and employers and the potential applicability of the bespoke modules in other Higher Education (HE) institutions

Book Review: Museums, History and Culture in Malaysia

    No full text
It is not very often that one comes across a book about museums in Malaysia. Neither can one easily find such a book that has its contents closely intertwined with the history and culture of the country. This is because an attempt to link the museums with history and heritage is indeed full of complexities as the author has tried to show. The book nonetheless shows that such task is possible. In fact, for college students, the book is quite helpful in providing useful historical information of Malaysia's past. From the narratives of the book, readers will certainly be made aware about the truth of the saying that Malaysia is unique in every sense of the word. As a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic country, it is unique in its style of political pragmatism as seen from the unconventional way its political elites try to manage a plural society that is still struggling to become a viable and integrated nation. Through his book, Museums, History and Culture in Malaysia, the author Abu Talib Ahmad has painstakingly demonstrated how museums in Malaysia try to cope with the diverse and pluralistic views of the country's histor

    No full text
This study aims to explore the application of the repetitive language style found in the novel Lieutenant Adnan by Abdul Latip Talib. The first objective of this study is to identify the application of repetition language style which includes six different types namely anaphora, epiphora, simplok, response, woordopname and parallelism. The second is to identify the application of the most dominant repetitive language style found in the text of this novel. The research methodology involves qualitative research based on text analysis of Lieutenant Adnan's novel by Abdul Latip Talib. This study uses Stylistic Theory based on the views of J.J Webber (1989). The analysis of this study also involves close and careful reading of each word, phrase and sentence to identify the application of repetitive language style found in the text of this novel. The results of the study found that the application of repetitive language style consists of anaphora, epiphora, simplok, response, woordopname and parallelism. The analysis found that the author uses this repetitive language style to emphasize and develop ideas in his writing sentences. In addition, the author of this novel likes to use the language style of anaphora repetition in his writing. The impact is that the application of language style elements in the writing of a novel text is seen to be able to act as an intermediary between the author and the reader to convey thoughts or ideas to be perceived and appreciated more easily and meaningfully in addition to enriching the aesthetic value of language in the writing of a novel text

The new year's festivals and the shrine of Ali Ibn Abi Talib Sy Mazar-I-Sharif, Afghanistan

    No full text
This study examines the customs and origins of three spring festivals at the shrine of 'Ali b. Abi Talib, Mazar-i Sharif, Afghanistan; namely Nauroz, Janda Bala and Gul-i Surkh. Since these festivals are not part of the Islamic religious calendar, we seek to locate their origins in the pre-Islamic religions of Iran and record the contemporary traditions of these festivals. Since the festivals are assimilated to a shrine dedicated to the fourth Caliph of Sunni Islam, we examine the processes which gave rise to this juxtaposition and how it came about that this shrine came to be considered a rival to Najaf. The Sa1juq and Timurid discovery narratives are examined (Chapters 1-2) in their wider religious and cultural context, followed by an examination of Afghan folklore related to Nauroz and the pre-Islamic religious traditions of Bactria (Chapters 3-4). We conclude that an important impetus for the founding of this shrine is the fact that, until the arrival of Islam, Bactra had been the paramount pilgrimage and cult centre of the region. Over the millennia, whilst the dominant religious tradition had changed, Bactra adapted to such ideological fluctuations in order to maintain its dominance of the. lucrative pilgrimage traffic. Marginalised by Islam, whose heroes and foci of pilgrimage lay in the Arab world, the alleged discovery of the body of Hazrat 'Ali at the site, provided an acceptable Islamic framework for the revival, or continuation, of indigenous Bactrian New Year customs. Our examination of Gul-i Surkh, or 'Red Rose', festival (chapters 5-6) finds a parallel in the Annenian Vardavar festival. Originally this festival appears to have been derived from a blending of Iranian and Babylonian religion in Bactria, namely the cults of Anahita, Adonistrammuz and custoins associated with the Iranian hero, Siyawush. Janda Bala (Chapter 7), on the other hand, appears to be rooted in ancient Vedic and Shamanistic tradition. All three festivals, though, we argue, also represent different aspects of ancient Indo-Aryan and Babylonian fertility rites connected with the spring and vernal equinox
