Reliable low latency I/O in torus-based interconnection networks
In today's high performance computing environment I/O remains the main bottleneck in
achieving the optimal performance expected of the ever improving processor and
memory technologies. Interconnection networks therefore combines processing units,
system I/O and high speed switch network fabric into a new paradigm of I/O based
network. It decouples the system into computational and I/O interconnections each
allowing "any-to-any" communications among processors and I/O devices unlike the
shared model in bus architecture. The computational interconnection, a network of
processing units (compute-nodes), is used for inter-processor communication in carrying
out computation tasks, while the I/O interconnection manages the transfer of I/O requests
between the compute-nodes and the I/O or storage media through some dedicated I/O
processing units (I /O-nodes). Considering the special functions performed by the I/O
nodes, their placement and reliability become important issues in improving the overall
performance of the interconnection system.
This thesis focuses on design and topological placement of I/O-nodes in torus based
interconnection networks, with the aim of reducing I/O communication latency between
compute-nodes and I/O-nodes even in the presence of faulty I/O-nodes. We propose an
efficient and scalable relaxed quasi-perfect placement scheme using Lee distance error
correction code such that compute-nodes are at distance-t or at most distance-t+1 from an
I/O-node for a given t. This scheme provides a better and optimal alternative placement
than quasi perfect placement when perfect placement cannot be found for a particular
torus. Furthermore, in the occurrence of faulty I/O-nodes, the placement scheme is also
used in determining other alternative I/O-nodes for rerouting I/O traffic from affected
compute-nodes with minimal slowdown. In order to guarantee the quality of service
required of inter-processor communication, a scheduling algorithm was developed at the router level to prioritize message forwarding according to inter-process and I/O messages
with the former given higher priority.
Our simulation results show that relaxed quasi-perfect outperforms quasi-perfect and the
conventional I/O placement (where I/O nodes are concentrated at the base of the torus
interconnection) with little degradation in inter-process communication performance.
Also the fault tolerant redirection scheme provides a minimal slowdown, especially when
the number of faulty I/O nodes is less than half of the initial available I/O nodes
Aromatic Plants growing in Nigeria: Essential Oil Constituents of Cassia alata (Linn.) Roxb. and Helianthus annuus L
The volatile constituents identified from the leaves of two Nigerian plants are being reported. The oil samples were obtained from the studied plant species by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus and then subsequently analyzed for their constituents by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The quantitatively significant constituents of the leaf oil of Cassia alata (Linn.) Roxb., (Fabaceae) were 1,8-cineole (39.8%), β-caryophyllene (19.1%) and caryophyllene oxide (12.7%). Limonene (5.2%), germacrene D (5.5%) and α-selinene (5.4%) constituted the other significant compounds present in the oil. The sunflower oil, Helianthus annuus L., (Asteraceae) was rich in α-pinene (16.0%), germacrene D (14.4%), sabinene (9.4%) and 14-hydroxy-α-muurolene (9.0%)

The ameliorative effects of a phenolic derivative of Moringa oleifera leave against vanadium-induced neurotoxicity in mice
Vanadium, a transition series metal released during some industrial activities, induces oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation. Ameliorative effect of a pure compound from the methanolic extract of Moringa oleifera leaves, code-named MIMO2, in 14-day old mice administered with vanadium (as sodium metavanadate 3 mg/kg) for 2 weeks was assessed. Results from body weight monitoring, muscular strength, and open field showed slight reduction in body weight and locomotion deficit in vanadium-exposed mice, ameliorated with MIMO2 co-administration. Degeneration of the Purkinje cell layer and neuronal death in the hippocampal CA1 region were observed in vanadium-exposed mice and both appeared significantly reduced with MIMO2 co-administration. Demyelination involving the midline of the corpus callosum, somatosensory and retrosplenial cortices was also reduced with MIMO2. Microglia activation and astrogliosis observed through immunohistochemistry were also alleviated. Immunohistochemistry for myelin, axons and oligodendrocyte lineage cells were also carried out and showed that in vanadium-treated mice brains, oligodendrocyte progenitor cells increased NG2 immunolabelling with hypertrophy and bushy, ramified appearance of their processes. MIMO2 displayed ameliorative and antioxidative effects in vanadium-induced neurotoxicity in experimental murine species. This is likely the first time MIMO2 is being used in vivo in an animal model

Evaluating Diagnostic Validity of Various Sagittal Cephalometric Parameters (a Comparative Retrospective Study)
Objective: The goal of this study was to determine the accuracy and reliability of numerous skeletal analyses for determining the sagittal skeletal pattern.
Methods: A total of 105 cephalometric x-rays were used. The Steiner’s ANB angle, anteroposterior dysplasia indicator (APDI), and angle of convexity by Down’s assessed the anteroposterior skeletal pattern. According to the diagnostic results of the majority of the criteria, the samples were divided into three classes: I, II, and III. The analyses' validity and reliability were assessed using Kappa statistics, positive predictive value, and sensitivity.
Results: There was a moderate agreement between the ANB angle and the final diagnosis (K= 0.593). The ANB angle demonstrated the highest sensitivity in class II and III groups (1.00).
Conclusions: The ANB angle and down's angle of convexity was the most accurate markers for class I and III groups, respectively, while the Down's angle of convexity and APDI were the most accurate indicators for class III group
Biodiesel: Freedom from Dependence on Fossil Fuels?
In view of the depleting oil reserves and exponential rise in petroleum prices, the search for alternative sources of fuel is very timely and important. The present paper addresses the underlying issues in biodiesel production from biomaterials and sustainable production and supply of first-generation biofuels, especially the one from jatropha. The agencies and research institutions involved in the production of biofuels and the national and international efforts made in this regard are discussed here. There is also a dire need of a step towards large-scale production and supply of second-generation biofuels, although in infant stage, to strengthen the world economy in general and Indian economy in particular. However, the production of biofuels are likely to have serious socio-economic implications especially to the lesser developed societies. Cattle Egrets and dry fish business in coastal areas
Cattle Egret is one of the common wetland birds in India known for its efficiency to make use of human interfered habitats. The present study is an attempt to document maggots of houseflies and calliphorids in the coastal sun drying fish yards and the role of the species in containing the vector species. The number of flies and maggots were found related with the visit of cattle egrets, demonstrating the importance of the species in controlling the vectors
