Direct numerical simulation of turbulent Couette-Poiseuille flow with zero skin friction
The near-wall scaling of mean velocity U(y) is addressed for the case of zero skin friction on one wall of a fully turbulent channel flow. The present DNS results can be added to the evidence in support of the conjecture that U is proportional to √yw in the region just above the wall at which the mean shear dU/dy = 0
Scaling and intermittency in ocean turbulence: analysis of coastal water optical properties and sea surface temperature (SST)
We consider here some scaling and intermittency properties of oceanic turbulence, with a general aim of considering the impact of turbulence on the bio-optical dynamics. For that purpose, we tried two different approaches, using in situ and satellite data. For the in situ study we adopted one dimensional and for the satellite two dimensional approaches. Different techniques such as Fourier power spectrum, Empirical mode of decomposition (EMD), Hilbert spectral analysis (HSA) have been used for analyzing the intermittency characteristics of the in situ data. For analyzing the multi-scale properties of the satellite images, we have considered Structure functions (SF) and Fourier power spectrum (1D and 2D). The general objective is to understand the multi-scale oceanic variability using scaling tools developed in the field of intermittent turbulence studies

The Chinese have let it be known since the death of Mao Zedong and the purge of the “Gang of Four” that they would in future draw on credits from foreign governments as well as other sources to finance imports of technology. According to western conjectures China’s capital requirements may be between US $ 25 and 50 bn or even a good deal higher. Many observers have taken the view that the Chinese have thereby put all their former development principles behind them. The author of the following article was in the P.R. China about the middle of this year at the invitation of the National Planning Commission. His assessment is that the P.R. China is far from embarking on an entirely new course in its development policy

Vegetation of montane bogs in east-flowing catchments of northern New England, New South Wales
The floristics of the montane bogs in east-flowing catchments of northern New England, north-eastern New South Wales (lat 28° 47’–31° 25’ S; long 151° 50’–152° 30’ E), are described from 62 full floristic survey sites (20 x 20 m in area). Eight vegetation communities are based on flexible UPGMA analysis of cover-abundance scores of vascular plant taxa. Shrub species make up 26% of the flora and herb species 69%, with the remaining taxa trees, climbers or vines. Shrub species were of little diagnostic value, as a few common dominants were shared across most communities. The herbaceous layer was found to be of better circumscriptive value. Communities described (based on dominant herbaceous species) are: (1) Themeda australis – Gonocarpus micranthus, (2) Baumea articulata – Baloskion stenocoleum, (3) Lepidosperma limicola – Baloskion stenocoleum, (4) Baloskion fimbriatum – Lomandra longifolia, (5) Lepyrodia scariosa – Blandfordia grandiflora, (6) Lepidosperma gunnii – Lepidosperma scariosa, (7) Baloskion stenocoleum – Empodisma minus, (8) Lepidosperma limicola – Xyris operculata. The mean annual moisture index was found to account for 26% of the variation in species density. These montane bog systems are some of the richest in Australia, with a high number of rare and restricted taxa. They are vulnerable to both present landuse practices and future changes in climate, are restricted in area, and need further conservation efforts to ensure their long-term survival

The English Sweating Sickness, with Particular Reference to the 1551 Outbreak in Chester
During the 15th and 16th centuries in England, there were five epidemics of a disease characterized by fever and profuse sweating and associated with high mortality. This disease became known as the English sweating sickness. The first epidemic occurred during 1485 at around the time of Henry Tudor's victory at Bosworth Field, and the last took place during the reign of Edward VI in 1551. The disease tended to occur during the summer and early autumn. The relatively affluent male adult population, particularly the clergy, seemed to suffer the highest attack rates, and, except in one epidemic, the disease appears to have attacked only individuals native to England. Despite the reputation of the English sweating sickness as a disease with a high fatality rate, records of burials and wills in Chester suggest that the 1551 epidemic did not have a marked effect on the demographics of the population. The etiologic agent is still unknown, although an enterovirus seems to this author to be the most likely pathogen
