Righteous Among the Nations: Music Without Borders
The Garden of the Righteous, a program presented by Naye Strunes, a Minneapolis-based Yiddish music ensemble, weaves together original Yiddish music and stories of fearless individuals from among the thousands of non-Jews who risked their lives to save innocent people during the Holocaust. The program gives audience members an opportunity to reflect on the extent of courage and compassion during dark times. All proceeds are given to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders), a contemporary humanitarian organization that provides medical assistance to populations experiencing crises. This article explores the concept of righteousness among the nations, particularly in the context of partnership scholarship; the history and present-day renaissance of Yiddish language, music, and culture; and Médecins Sans Frontières as a contemporary example of living courageously
The arc and the sediment
Gretta Bitsilly, gin-steeped mother of two and self-proclaimed expert at standing outside the margins of ethnicity and peering in, has been all but eclipsed by the world that eludes her--as a wife, a writer, a skeptic in the other land of Zion," Utah. Gretta has set off to Fort Defiance, Arizona, where she hopes to convince her Navajo husband, who has escaped not from his family but from alcoholism, to come home. Over a sputtering two-steps-forward, one-step-back desert journey, Gretta is diverted by chance, seizures, an inconstant memory, and the disjointed character of her irresolute quest. She is fueled by a volatile mix of rage and curiosity and is rendered careless by ambivalence toward her marriage--she knows a welcome mat will not be waiting for her, "that white girl" who can't seem to get anything right. On route Gretta finds herself lost in the landscape, in strange company, or in her own convolution of language and inner space. With a dictionary and a laptop she attempts to write herself into a better existence--a hopeful existence--and to connect points of intellectual, physical, even spiritual reference. This tale, though dark and difficult, is infused with tart, twisted humor. Confused, disheveled, self-deprecating, and self-destructive, Gretta is also sharp and funny. Here, first-time novelist Christine Allen-Yazzie breaks apart her own narrative arc but with gritty reality seals it near-shut again, if in rearrangement, drawing us into Gretta's wrestling match with herself, her husband, her addiction, and the road.--Provided by publisher. The Plan -- The Plan, Amended -- New Breasts = New Bras -- To Food -- Dear James -- You Got to Cut Its Throat -- Hello, Please Help Me -- How to Make the World a Better Place -- Just So You're All Right Now -- All That Matters -- The Arc and the Sediment -- A Sore Cursing -- Hello, Kitty -- Fruit Sauce Should Always Be Served on the Side -- The Curiously Multifaceted Nature of Victimization -- The Wavering Red Light -- An Unspeakable Shine -- Entering the Third Dimension -- Forward, Anywhere -- What Becomes of Virginia Dare -- In the Vat Lies the Fruit -- Second Place Is Pretty Good, Considering -- A Little Reluctance Goes a Long Way -- I Want Some Cookies -- Who's Your Butterfly? -- In Drills and Bursts -- Rubber Hatchets -- I'm Saying If -- I'm Saying When -- Do You Want to Save Changes? -- As a Matter of Spite -- Keeping It Out -- Words for Later -- And Also It Goes Back to That Whistle -- They'll Eat My Irises -- Or What -- The Image Lasts All the Way Across -- Afterword: Gretta's Alternative Twelve Steps to Sobriety
Righteous Among the Nations: Honoring Spiritual Resistance in a Time of Pandemics
Telling the stories of people who risked their lives to save victims of the Holocaust through music is the focus of a project called The Garden of the Righteous. This project was introduced in a recent article in the Interdisciplinary Journal of Partnership Studies, called “Righteous Among the Nations: Music Without Borders” (Eisner et al., 2019). This piece provides an update on the evolution of the project during a time of pandemics
Environmental offences at Põlva county during 2004-2016
Bakalaureusetöö
Keskkonnakaitse õppekavalKeskkonnaalane järelevalve jaguneb kolmeks põhivaldkonnaks: keskkonnakaitse,
looduskaitse ja kalakaitse, peamiseks järelevalveasutuseks on Keskkonnainspektsioon.
Keskkonnainspektsioon menetles kümne aasta jooksul (2004-2014) keskmiselt 4326
rikkumist aastas, millest umbkaudu 16 % olid looduskaitse valdkonna rikkumised.
Töö eesmärgiks on anda ülevaade Keskkonnainspektsiooni poolt menetletud
õigusrikkumistest looduskaitse valdkonnas aastatel 2004-2016. Antud töös on kasutatud
analüüsiks Keskkonnainspektsiooni õigusrikkumiste andmekogus ja E-toimikus
kajastuvaid rikkumisi. Samuti on kasutatud avalikult kasutatavaid andmeid
Keskkonnainspektsiooni aastaraamatutest ning statistilistest tabelitest.
Põlvamaa looduskaitse valdkonna rikkumiste osakaal aastatel 2004-2016 oli 4,3% kogu
Eestis menetletud rikkumistest selles valdkonnas. Põlvamaa rikkumiste haripunkt oli
2004. aastal ning enamus rikkumisi oli metsakaitse alamvaldkonnas. Looduskaitse
aitavad kaasa tegelemisele probleemsemate valdkondadega. The field of environmental protections divides into three main fields: the environmental
protection, nature conservation and fisheries protection. During 2004-2016 the Estonian
Environmental Inspectorate proceeded 4326 offences an average per year, of which 16%
were commited in the field of nature conservation.
The main aim of this research is to give an overview of the offences in the field of nature
conservation which were registered by the Estonian Environmental Inspectorate during
2004-2016. For those thesis are used data from the Environmental Inspectorate´s
contravention database and E-file to analyse. Also the author used data from the Estonian
Inspectorate’s yearbook and statistic summary tables.
Of all offences in the field of nature conservation in Estonia only 4,3% were committed
in Põlva County. The hot spot of offences in that field in Põlva County was in 2004 and
most of these offences committed in the field of forestry. The changes in the field of nature
conservation regulatory acts have not brought big changes in the dynamics of offences in
Põlva County.
The Environmental Inspectorate sets almost every year new goals and priorities, which
help to solve problems in problematic fields effectively
Video Modeling to Increase Pragmatics in Asperger's Syndrome
Pragmatic skills prove difficult for children with Asperger’s syndrome. The purpose of this study was to determine if video modeling positively impacted pragmatic skills. The subject was a 9 year old with Asperger’s Syndrome. A spontaneous speech-language sample was conducted to gather data. The researcher and subject discussed the components of a conversation. A live TV interview of an author the subject was already interested in was viewed. The subject practiced and conducted his own interview with a partner who also had Asperger’s Syndrome. The partner had previously participated in a similar study. Four behaviors were targeted for increase or decrease. The intervention was successful in three of four behaviors resulting in an increase of pragmatic appropriateness overall
The main objective of this research work is the reading and analysis of Jo March, the main character of the film “Little Women” (2019), directed by Gretta Gerwing, from the elements of the filmic narrative such as the construction of characters and the direction of art. This analysis will be motivated in order to verify how this character represents the postmodern woman, according to the concept of the author Gilles Lipovetsky, although developed in a social context belonging to the 19th century.Trabajo de investigació
Short-term climate variability in the North Atlantic during the onset of northern hemisphere glaciation and the final closure of the Panamanian seaways, 3.3 - 2.5 Ma.
Long- and short-term Late Pliocene climate variations were studied at North Atlantic Sites (S.) ODP 984 and DSDP 609, supplemented by published records from S. 907 and S. 610. Foraminiferal ?18O records provided the base for stable-isotope stratigraphy. Deepwater and sea surface temperatures (SST) were reconstructed from Mg/Ca values of benthic and planktic foraminifera. Epibenthic ?___ variations were used as tracers of deepwater ventilation. Counts of ice rafted detritus served to trace back the initiation of the Greenland ice-sheet. In addition, counts of benthic foraminifera (M. Weinelt) served as tracer for primary production. Chapter 1 shows that the onset of northern hemisphere glaciation (NHG), in particular on Greenland occurred only slighty after, hence as a result of the final closure of the Central American Seaways, which led to an increase in Caribbean sea surface salinity by up to 0.9‰. A first step occurred 2.95-2.82 Ma (marine istotope stage – MIS – G16-11), a second step 2.75-2.73 Ma (MIS G6), in total amounting to ~90 m of glacial sea-level fall. The first step was coeval with an intensified Atlantic thermohaline circulation (0.2-0.3‰ increase in benthic ?13C; 2-3°C increase in SST), leading to enhanced snow precipitation in northern high-latitudes. Chapter 2 documents millennial-scale climate variations prior and after the onset of NHG at Site 984 to test the hypothesis that Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) cycles of 1470 yr (and their multiples) are linked to ice-breakouts and meltwater incursions from northern hemisphere ice-sheets. On the long term, periodicities of 1300, 950, and 450 yr prevail, which closely resemble solar cycles of the Holocene. The same applies to selected glacial stages prior to the onset of NHG and to interglacial stages in general. However, glacial stages after the onset of NHG (MIS G14, G6, and 104) show periodicities near 1.47, 2.9 and 4.4 kyr, DO-like periodicities which thus occur in the presence of large northern hemisphere ice-sheets only, and as result of ice breakouts. Chapter 3 (with M. Weinelt as first author) reports on changes in surface productivity prior and after the onset of NHG. A distinct benthic faunal turnover started at ~2.75 Ma and culminated at 2.70 Ma (MIS G6), precisely coeval with a 0.6-‰ drop in ?___ and a cooling of Upper North Atlantic Deep Water. Prior to MIS G6, the benthic fauna at Site 984 was characteristic of high nutrient fluxes as recorded by Bolivina pacifica, a benthic taxa that abruptly disappeared during early MIS G6, being replaced by Cassidulina teretis, a fauna adapted to low and irregular food supply. This faunal turnover may record a drop in North Atlantic primary production, resulting from enhanced seasonality and/or surface water stratification. Chapter 4 and 5 summarize the results of IODP Expedition 303 “North Atlantic Climate I” in which I participated as sedimentologist to supplement the results on the onset of NHG outlined above with high-quality sediment cores from the Northwest Atlantic, in particular, from Site U1307 off the southern tip of Greenland. It will provide new insights into the history of the East Greenland Current and deepwater sources in the Labrador Sea with a time resolution of 300 years
Plotting the Centre: Bramante’s Drawings for the New St. Peter’s Basilica
This paper examines the concept of 'centre' in the design and symbolism of the new St Peter's Basilica, executed by Donato Bramante in the early 16th century. Drawing upon theological and philosophical notions of centre in late Medieval and Renaissance culture (specifically Nicolas Cusanus), the study argues that Bramante's drawings for the project reveal a particular understanding of centre, and its constellations of sub-centres, that broadly follow Platonic cosmological principles highlighted in the Timaeus. The paper considers how this understanding of space was also communicated in the iconography of the frescoes in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican Palace, executed by Raphael at the same time as Bramante's design for the new basilica, in which Bramante is also credited as the author of the perspective construction
The effective design of sampling campaigns for emerging chemical and microbial contaminants in drinking water and its resources based on literature mining
As well as known contaminants, surface waters also contain an unknown variety of chemical and microbial contaminants which can pose a risk to humans if surface water is used for the production of drinking water. To protect human health proactively, and in a cost-efficient way, water authorities and drinking water companies need early warning systems. This study aimed to (1) assess the effectiveness of screening the scientific literature to direct sampling campaigns for early warning purposes, and (2) detect new aquatic contaminants of concern to public health in the Netherlands. By screening the scientific literature, six example contaminants (3 chemical and 3 microbial) were selected as potential aquatic contaminants of concern to the quality of Dutch drinking water. Stakeholders from the Dutch water sector and various information sources were consulted to identify the potential sources of these contaminants. Based on these potential contamination sources, two sampling sequences were set up from contamination sources (municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants), via surface water used for the production of drinking water to treated drinking water. The chemical contaminants, mycophenolic acid, tetrabutylphosphonium compounds and Hexafluoropropylene Oxide Trimer Acid, were detected in low concentrations and were thus not expected to pose a risk to Dutch drinking water. Colistin resistant Escherichia coli was detected for the first time in Dutch wastewater not influenced by hospital wastewater, indicating circulation of bacteria resistant to this last-resort antibiotic in the open Dutch population. Four out of six contaminants were thus detected in surface or wastewater samples, which showed that screening the scientific literature to direct sampling campaigns for both microbial and chemical contaminants is effective for early warning purposes.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Sanitary Engineerin
An Analysis Familys Existence Reflected in The Movie Little Women (2019): A Semiotic Approach
"An Analysis of Family Existence Reflected in the Film Little Women 2019: A Semiotic Approach" this title was chosen by the author because he wanted to find out more about the existence of this deep family. The 2019 Little Women film was directed by Gretta Gerwig, this film won an Oscar in 2020 in the Best Costume Design category. The film is adapted from the novel by Louisa May Alcott in 1868. This film tells the sweet story of four brothers named Jo March, Amy, Meg, and Beth March. This film tells the story of four sisters who live in the 19th century. How do they socialize with the environment, and pursue their dreams. In this film, it is clear that the role of parents is very important in the child's growth process. The purpose of this study is to identify the existence of the family contained in this film by using Ronald Barthes' semiotic theory. In this study, the authors used a qualitative descriptive method. This premiere data is taken from the Little Women 2019 film and secondary data is taken from journals, books, and online websites related to the topic of this research. This study concludes that 6 scenes describe the existence of a family that can be found in this film, namely sharing with others, forgiving each other, giving advice to children, being willing to sacrifice for the family, maintaining health in the family, togetherness and harmony in the family
