Analysis of EGF signaling in healthy aging promotion in caenorhabditis elegans
The increase in longevity expectancy has been a focused issue goal of much current aging research. Many genes have been noted to modulate longevity of simple model systems, acting through distinct mechanisms. However, in principle, promotion of healthy aging of individual tissues can be accomplished without a major impact on the longevity endpoint. As such, healthspan-only genes may have been missed by genetic screens for longevity. New screens for tissue–specific betterment of aging phenotypes were anticipated to reveal a class of genes that might be manipulated for tissue-specific anti-aging outcomes. We identified two novel healthspan regulators, called HPA-1 and HPA-2 (for the high performance in old age locomotory phenotypes that their disruption confers) that delay age-associated locomotory decline when they are knocked down by RNAi or by genetic deletion. Surprisingly, hpa-1 and hpa-2 do not regulate healthspan through canonical recognized longevity pathways. Instead, the structure of HPA proteins implicated a novel function of EGF signaling in anti–aging protection, and my genetic studies supported this mechanism. Activated EGF signaling confers a positive effect on multiple aging phenotypes, acting through the downstream branch of the EGF pathway involving PLCanalysis defined the temporal and spatial benefits from EGF signaling. EGF/lin-3 ligand is expressed into late life and acts throughout life to influence healthy aging. lin-3 alternative slice variants, lin-3S and lin-3XL show healthspan promotion. Muscle and neuron are the most potent tissue for EGFR signaling on healthspan enhancement. I also identified global and tissue-specific modulators of healthy aging in the EGF pathway and identified candidate calcium-sensitive transducers of the anti-aging function of EGF signaling. Recent data in vertebrates suggest that EGF signaling might contribute to long-term maintenance. Thus, EGF signaling may exert a conserved impact on healthy aging and might be a plausible reagent for anti-aging therapies.Ph. D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Shih-Hung Y
Rethinking Literature Field to Overseas Students of Hung Che Chen
[[abstract]]陳衡哲(1893-1976),筆名莎菲,一生中擁有數個「第一頭銜」,中國第一批官費留美女學生成員、中國現代第一篇白話小說作者、北京大學第一位女教授。陳衡哲雙親自幼格外重視陳衡哲教育,視之為將才精心栽培,使陳衡哲明白女子教育的重要,日後推動中國女子高等教育的改革。陳衡哲是中國第一批官費女留學生,故從其求學歷程可看出晚清女子高等教育變遷。陳衡哲留美時期活躍於《留美學生季報》,此報是五四白話文運動最初發聲的報刊,因資料來源不易,故罕見於學術討論,本文將陳衡哲發表在《季報》作品,逐一說明並有系統的主題說明討論。學術界對於中國「第一篇白話小說」的爭議,主要有三種討論聲音,劉韻琴(1884-1945)〈大公子〉、陳衡哲〈一日〉和魯迅(1981-1936)〈狂人日記〉,後兩者屢被相提並論;陳衡哲小說〈洛綺思的問題〉,被認為是新女性小說的開端,呈現高等教育女性在事業與家庭抉擇的兩難。陳衡哲寫作此文時與胡適討論密切,有好事者因陳衡哲與胡適關係良好,妄作文章斷言兩人有曖昧關係,這段不實八卦日後甚至遮蔽陳衡哲的文學創作光芒。留美返國後的陳衡哲,在報刊發表大量著作,藉由期刊傳播發揮自己個人影響力,其文學創作體裁多元,尤其是「新詩」,因此本論文針對陳衡哲新詩體裁深入討論。陳衡哲擔任《努力週報》、《獨立評論》編輯群之一,此兩報主要編輯為胡適,帶領當代留學知識青年,針貶時是,對於國家提出建言,透過報刊文獻資料,足以補足陳衡哲發行文本數量較少的缺陷。[[abstract]]Hung Che Chen (1893-1976), with a pen name Sophia, obtained many “first” titles in her life—first batch government-supported female students from China to study in America, the first author to write Chinese vernacular fiction in the history of modern Chinese literature, and the first woman professor in Peking University. Hung Che Chen’s parents devote much attention to her education and nurtured this daughter to become a literate person. Hung Che Chen was being raised in such a literary family and understands well the importance of woman education. The family background has a great influence on her in her future hard work and contribution to promote woman higher education in China. As the first batch government-supported female students who studied in America, her experience of studied abroad reflected the circumstances of woman higher education in late Qing dynasty. Hung Che Chen was an active member of “The Chinese Students’ Quarterly” , an important magazine of America-Chinese students’, when she study in the US. “The Chinese Students’ Quarterly” is the first magazine that published the ideologies of May 4th Movement, but as it is hard to obtain, this magazine is rarely discussed today. This master's thesis tries to discuss and analyses all articles of Hung Che Chen that published in “The Chinese Students’ Quarterly” thematically. The three contentious novels as the first Chinese vernacular fiction in modern Chinese literature are “The Childe” by Yun Qin Liu (1884-1945), “One Day” by Hung Che Chen and “A Madman's Diary” by Lu Xun (1881-1936). In this discussion, Hung Che Chen’s work is comparable with Lu Xun’s “A Madman's Diary”. Hung Che Chen’s novel “Luo Qi Si’s problems” was known as the first feminism fiction in modern Chinese literature, reflected the controversial between carrier and family encountered by the high-educated women in modern time. When Hung Che Chen wrote this novel, she often made discussion with Hu Shih. The close relationship between two of them subjected to rumor that they have dubious relationship. This gossip even obstructed Hung Che Chen’s achievement in literature. When returned to China, Hung Che Chen wrote many articles for the periodical, especial in modern poetry, therefore this thesis will focus on the discussion of her poetries. Hung Che Chen had became the editor of “Nuli Weekly” and “Independent Review”. This two papers was organized by chief editor Hu Shih which leading the educated youth to criticize on social issues and the government policies. By collecting data and materials from the newspapers, it could make up the deficiency of books published for Hung Che Chen.[[note]]碩

Numerical Study of Frequency Selective Surface by Spectral Galerkin Method
表面擇頻元件 (Frequency Selective Surface) 為空間中二維的週期性結構. 由於它的頻譜會在某個頻率造成全反射 (補貼型結構) 和全穿透 (孔洞型結構), 因此就像一個濾波器 (filter)一樣. 多年來, 此元件已經有許多學術上的研究. 而除了學術上的研究, 表面擇頻元件更是已經在電磁波中的許多頻段得到應用. 如在微波頻段, 它可幫助雷達罩 (radomes) 和天線系統 (antenna systems) 的設計; 在紅外線和次微米頻段, 可用來做極化器 (polarizers) 和分波器 (beam splitter); 在遠紅外線頻段, 其可應用於太陽能收集表面 (solar selective surfaces)等等.

為了讓我們的程式在計算的形狀上擁有自由度, 我們採用子空間基礎函數 (Subdomain Basis Function) 做為表面感應電流的展開基底. 在未知數目很大的時候, 我們運用共軛梯度演算法, 以迭代的方式來求未知矩陣. 而運算上, 我們更採用快速傅立葉轉換來加速我們的運算速度.
這篇論文著重在薄金屬屏幕的表面擇頻元件 (Thin-screen Frequency Selective Surface). 影響該元件頻率響應的參數非常多. 我們將探討不同形狀, 不同尺度的金屬屏幕, 不同入射角度, 包括補貼型和孔洞型的元件結構. 另外, 我們還探討了阻抗及介電質所造成的影響. 此外, 我們還應用了多次的傳輸線理論來完成了多層的表面擇頻元件結構. 同時, 我們也用參考文獻裡已知的結果來驗證我們的理論, 計算, 及電腦程式的正確性.Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSSs) are a kind of periodically two-dimensional structures. Since it exhibits total reflection (patch FSSs) and total transmission (aperture FSSs) in certain frequency, there are a lot of researches in recent years. In addition to researches, there are many applications, like radomes and antennas system in microwave region or polarizers and beam splitters in the infrared and submillimeter region, and so on.
In this thesis, spectral Galerkin method is used to solve the scattering problem of FSSs. We will divide the physical problems into problems of incident-propagating and induced current scattering. On the problem of scattering, Floquet’s Theorem is used to express induced surface current density in Fourier series, and reduce computation domain into a unit cell. After applying the boundary condition at the location of conduction screen, we can calculate out the unknown induced surface current density distribution by using known incident and spectral Green’s function. And then, we can use that to analyze reflection and transmission. In order to decouple TE (transverse-electric) and TM (transverse-magnetic) waves, we use vector potential approach to suppose incident. In addition, spectral domain immitance approach is used to obtain spectral Green’s function.
In computation, in order to let our shapes free, subdomain basis functions are used to be basis of expansion of induced surface current. In addition, in the cases of big unknown matrices, conjugate gradient method is used. And we also use Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to speed up our computation.
We stress on thin-screen frequency selective surfaces in this thesis. Many arguments affect its frequency responses. We are going to discuss several different kinds of numerical cases, including different shapes, different scales of conducting screen, patch and aperture, and different incident angles. Further, the FSSs with impedance and dielectrics, and multilayered-FSSs are considered. At the same time, we present some reference to verify the accuracy of our computations.目錄
