Hung Hsien oral history interview and transcript
This recording and transcript form part of a collection of oral history interviews conducted by the Chao Center for Asian Studies at Rice University. This collection includes audio recordings and transcripts of interviews with Asian Americans native to or living in Houston.Hung Hsien, also known as Margaret Chang, was born in Yangzhou, China in 1933 in a very artistic and prominent family. She settled in Taiwan with her family in 1948. She studied traditional Chinese painting with Prince Pu Hsinyu and in the Normal University of Taiwan. After she married T.C. Chang in 1957, the couple moved to Chicago where Hung Hsien studied painting in both Northwestern University and the Art Institute of Chicago. Hung Hsien’s work was exhibited and collected in several museums including Smithsonian Museum, Museum in Hong Kong, and Art Institute of Chicago, etc. Now, Hung Hsien and T.C. Chang live in the museum district in Houston. She teaches at Glassell School of Arts and teaches Tai Chi at the Jung Center. She and her husband are good at playing tennis

Li Hung-Chang
Alicia Little (1845–1926) was a prolific writer who moved to China after her marriage to missionary Archibald Little (1838–1907) in 1866. She published many accounts of Chinese culture and society before founding the successful campaign against foot-binding in 1895. This volume, first published in 1903, contains her biography of the eminent Chinese statesman Li Hung–Chang (1823–1901). Li was a towering figure in late nineteenth century Chinese political life, exerting a profound influence over Chinese foreign policy and relations and overseeing China's development of western style industrialism until his dramatic fall from power following China's defeat in the 1894 Sino-Japanese War. Using contemporary newspaper accounts, eyewitness descriptions, and interviews with his contemporaries, Little describes Li's life chronologically, describing his rise to prominence following the Taiping Rebellion in 1851. This volume was the first extensive account of Li's life to be published in English.</jats:p
Quantum Query Complexity with Matrix-Vector Products
We study quantum algorithms that learn properties of a matrix using queries that return its action on an input vector. We show that for various problems, including computing the trace, determinant, or rank of a matrix or solving a linear system that it specifies, quantum computers do not provide an asymptotic speedup over classical computation. On the other hand, we show that for some problems, such as computing the parities of rows or columns or deciding if there are two identical rows or columns, quantum computers provide exponential speedup. We demonstrate this by showing equivalence between models that provide matrix-vector products, vector-matrix products, and vector-matrix-vector products, whereas the power of these models can vary significantly for classical computation
