Residually finite groups / Lim Hui Min

In this thesis, we will study a stronger residually finite property called weak potency. More precisely, we aim to study the weak potency of HNN extensions and generalised free products of weakly potent groups and the main tools we used are lters. First we study the weak potency of HNN extensions by introducing the concept of h-filters and then use it to prove the main criterion. Then we prove several characterisations for the weak potency of certain HNN extensions with cyclic associated subgroups as well as a characterisation for the Baumslag-Solitar groups. Next, we will also apply our results to HNN extensions of finitely generated nilpotent groups. We shall give characterisations for certain HNN extensions of characteristically weakly potent groups with finitely generated central associated subgroups and HNN extensions of free abelian groups of finite rank to be weakly potent. In the last part we study the weak potency of generalised free products. Werst introduce w-filter and prove a criterion for generalised free products to be weakly potent. By using it, we then give characterisations for the weak potency of generalised free products with cyclic amalgamated subgroups and with central amalgamated subgroups. Then we extend the results to tree products of finitely many groups. Finally we show that certain one-relator groups with torsion are weakly potent

Online Survey System (OSS) / Tan Hui Min

Online survey system (OSS) is an electronic survey system and productivity tool. The system enables the user to conduct a survey at case which was previously paper-based and which can be tedious and time-consuming. It can be used or administered from anywhere an internet browser is available. The users can create and design their own interactive online survey. OSS provides a fast distribution of survey from to a large geographical area through email. The respondents just need to click on the URL attach with the invitation email to direct them to the survey. After that OSS will generates analysis report based on the responses collected. User will be able to get the results such as average percentage, etc by mouse click

Exploring the impact of distance teaching on mathematics educational values in Hong Kong: a study of in-service teachers’ perspectives

    No full text
This study analyzed the variation in teachers’ mathematical educational values between distance and traditional face-to-face teaching. Enabled by the unique circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, the research explored the impact of remote teaching on primary and secondary mathematics education in Hong Kong. An online survey, completed by 109 practicing mathematics teachers, assessed their pre-existing educa- tional values and their adaptability to the shift towards distance teaching, as well as their teaching practices. Findings indicated that despite the multitude of digital teaching tools, the implementation of most mathematical educational values was more restricted in distance teaching. Rationalism and Control were prioritized, reflecting the chal- lenges of assessing student progress remotely. Among the 13 values identified, Fun and Engagement, along with Thinking and Problem-solving, Achievement, and Reasoning, were significantly diminished, highlighting the shortcomings of one-way and superfi- cial concept-based teaching. The study concludes that distance teaching, when com- pletely isolated from traditional methods, may not offer the benefits suggested in the literature, impacting student engagement, motivation, and higher-order thinking. This necessitates a unique curriculum development model to effectively incorporate blended and self-directed learning
