No full textDans toutes ses responsabilités, Hubert Curien a encouragé la coopération scientifique internationale, porteuse de progrès et souvent génératrice de projets de grande ampleur. En sens inverse, en tant que ministre aux côtés du président François Mitterrand, il s’est employé à mettre cette coopération au service de la diplomatie, particulièrement lors de la période délicate de l’effondrement du bloc soviétique. De même, il a œuvré avec pragmatisme et persévérance à la construction de l’Europe de la science. Hubert Curien, ancien maquisard, laisse le souvenir d’un partisan infatigable de l’amitié franco-allemande et de la paix.In every position he held, Hubert Curien promoted international cooperation in science, as it fosters both progress and the emergence of large-scale science projects. Reciprocally, as a minister close to President François Mitterrand, he took advantage of such links for the benefit of diplomatic issues, particularly at critical times around the collapse of the Eastern Block. Similarly, he was devoted to building a Europe of Science with both perseverance and pragmatism. Hubert Curien, who fought in the Resistance in his youth, will be remembered as a tireless partisan of the French-German friendship and peace among nations

No full textPendant ses mandats ministériels (1984-1986 puis 1988-1993), Hubert Curien a donné une forte visibilité à la recherche au sein de l’action gouvernementale. Il a agi dans tous les domaines : outils de pilotage (tableaux de bord, prospective, évaluation) ; renforcement de l’organisation de la recherche publique ; cohérence accrue du Budget civil de recherche ; montée en puissance de la recherche industrielle ; développement des rapports entre science, société et citoyen… sans oublier la prédilection pour l’Espace ni, surtout, la priorité qu’Hubert Curien a, toute sa vie durant, donnée à la formation par la recherche.All the time Hubert Curien was a minister (over the 1984-86 and 1988-1993 periods), research was a strong component of the government policy. The minister was active in every domain: creating tools for research management (prospective, evaluation, indicators); strengthening the structure of public research; improving the consistency of the national research effort; getting the private companies to increase their investment in research; expanding the links between science and citizens; at the same time Curien, although keenly interested in space issues, consistently gave the highest priority to training through research

Au CNRS puis à la DGRST Hubert Curien promeut une politique éditoriale et la création de lieux de partage des savoirs qui, bientôt, irrigueront le territoire national. Ministre, il lance un programme mobilisateur pour la culture scientifique et technique avec des actions novatrices en direction de la jeunesse et des entreprises. Défenseur d’une francophonie bien comprise, Hubert Curien soutient une littérature scientifique de qualité pour les étudiants comme pour un public plus large.Ever since he was a child, Hubert Curien developed a strong interest in observing facts, which was at the origin of his scientific vocation. As a physicist and a teacher, he knew how to share his appetite for science, together with his conviction that we must all feel concerned by research matters. At the CNRS, then at the GDSTR, Hubert Curien promoted both an editorial approach and the setting-up of special places to share knowledge, soon spreading all over the country. As a minister, he initiated a programme aimed at developing scientific and technical culture, based upon innovative actions dedicated both to young people and to firms. As a committed defender of the French language, Hubert Curien promoted a high-level scientific literature for students as well as the public in general
