Developing a Longitudinal Perspective on the Human Dimensions of Recreational Fisheries
[[abstract]]Tseng, Y.-P.; Huang, Y.-C., and Ditton, R., 2012. Developing a longitudinal perspective on the human dimensions of recreational fisheries. Journal of Coastal Research, 28(6), 1418-1425. Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate a longitudinal perspective on state-level recreational fisheries that could be used anywhere systematic angler surveys are conducted over time. With six angler surveys from Texas conducted over a 16-year time period, selected human dimension indicators of recreational fishing were analyzed with the index of qualitative variation (IQV) and Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient. Saltwater anglers demonstrated significant upward trends in household income, self-reported skill, preference for catching one particular species, and satisfaction with their fishing experiences. No significant downward trends were found. Although expected in some cases for various reasons, no significant trends were found in gender, baby boomer participation, racial/ethnic differences, years of fishing experience, and average annual days of saltwater fishing. Finally, this paper demonstrates the need for consistent human dimension questions over time in understanding the longitudinal perspective of recreational fisheries.[[note]]SC

China's Great Ascendancy and structural risks: consequences of asymmetric market liberalisation
China's great ascendancy from a poor agrarian economy to an economic superpower is unprecedented. But in the process, structural imbalances, resource inefficiency, and income inequality worsened rapidly. It is argued that the coexistence of China's extraordinary growth and serious structural risks are two sides of the same coin: asymmetric liberalisation of product and factor markets. Distortions in markets for labour, capital, land, energy, and the environment lower production costs, increase corporate profits, raise investment returns, improve the international competitiveness of Chinese goods, and therefore lift China's growth. But they also depress consumption. China needs to accelerate factor market liberalisation in order to complete the transition to a market economy and to lock the economy onto a more sustainable path. Image Recovery of the Resurrected Seashore City-New Orleans, Louisiana
[[abstract]]Huang, Y-C.; Tseng, Y-P, and Yiap, L-C., 2013. Image recovery of the resurrected seashore city New Orleans. Journal of Coastal Research, 29(2), 430-437. Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208.
New Orleans and its touristic image were devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Efforts to rebuild the city and its image began immediately after the crisis. This study sought to understand the image of New Orleans as perceived by domestic tourists after several crises (e.g. Hurricane Katrina, BP oil spill). This study was designed to measure different components of the touristic image of New Orleans, and to identify the determinants that influence those components. The results of this study show that the touristic images of New Orleans were still appealing to both repeat visitors and nonvisitors. City government should focus in strengthening its core tourism products (e.g. an abundance of great Jazz music, distinctive New Orleans style Creole and Cajun dishes, and great attractions), which play the crucial roles in attracting the tourists, while improving those concerns that were perceived negatively, like the safety and cleanliness of the city. The tourism industry of New Orleans has overcome the odds, and the city retains a positive overall image, in which its' touristic image, as perceived by visitors was more favorable than that afforded it by nonvisitors. In addition, this study found that affective images of the city had a greater effect on the overall impression than did cognitive images; hence, New Orleans marketers should maintain or reinforce visitors' affective attachment of New Orleans to keep this seashore city as a preferred traveling destination.[[note]]SC
