    Species identification of Anguilla eels by polymerase chain reaction /restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of the gonadotropin II-beta subunit gene

    Gonadotropin II beta-subunit gene (GTH II-β DNA) fragments of nine eel species of the genus Anguilla were amplified with specific oligonucleotides by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and a single product was obtained from each species. In subsequent restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the PCR-amplified GTH II-β DNA, the restriction endonuclease Hpa II, Sph I and Nsi I gave restriction patterns that differed among 3 species, e.g., Anguilla japonica, A. bicolor bicolor and A. anguilla, with other six species of anguillid eels, e.g., A. rostrata, A. australis australis, A. reinhardti, A. celebesensis, A. marmorata, and A. bicolor pacifica. Our results suggest that the PCR/RFLP analysis provides a rapid and convenient method to discriminate eel species

    The profiles of serum estradiol-17β and testosterone levels during silvering of the wild Japanese eel Anguilla japonica

    To understand the changes of serum levels of sex steroids in the wild Japanese eel Anguilla japonica during silvering process, eels collected from the Kaoping River of Taiwan from Aug 2000 through Jun 2001 were examined. The maturational stages of the female eels before and during silvering were divided into four stages: juvenile, sub-adult, pre-silver and silver stages based on skin coloration and oocyte diameter. The male eels were investigated only in the silver stage. Radioimmunoassays were employed to measure serum levels of estradiol-17β (E2) and testosterone (T). The mean liver weight of the female eels increased significantly during silvering, but the mean hepatosomatic index remained rather constant. On the contrast, both mean ovarian weight and gonadosomatic index increased significantly during silvering process. The mean serum concentrations of E2 in the females increased significantly during silvering (p < 0.05). The serum E2 levels were undetectable in silver males. The mean serum T concentrations increased significantly in females (p < 0.05) during silvering, with lowest mean values in the juvenile stage and highest mean value in the silver stage. The mean serum T level in the silver males was significantly lower than the silver females (p < 0.05). In conclusion, both serum E2 and T concentrations increased with ovarian development of the wild Japanese eels during silvering, while serum E2 was undetectable in the silver male eels. The findings support that androgen, but not estrogen, is likely an important factor for silvering process of the eels in both sexes

    Pt/WN based fuel cell type methanol sensor

    Methanol detection is known to be a challenge using the normal Pt/C based gas sensor. This is primarily due to CO poisoning of the Pt active sites, resulting in an irreversible loss of sensor performance. In this paper, a novel fuel cell type gas sensor based on platinized mesoporous tungsten nitride (Pt/WN) is fabricated by employing a hot-press method. The device shows considerable performance for methanol detection at room temperature without external potential applied. The mesoporous WN is prepared through a simple solid-state method with subsequent ammonolysis. An ethylene glycol reduction method is applied to load Pt nanoparticles on WN or on carbon blacks. Results show that Pt/WN gas sensor has the sensitivity of 0.037 mu A/ppm, which is four times higher than that of the Pt/C counterpart. In addition, replacing carbon with WN will increase the response to to methanol with excellent selectivity and stability. The synergistic effect between WN and Pt may play an important role. This investigation shows the potential of tungsten metal nitride in the gas sensor device reported; this offers a new way to change the selectivity of gas sensors using suitably chosen support materials

Although the harmful impact of heavy fuel oil (HFO) on the marine environment is widely known, many shipwrecks cause contamination of the surrounding areas. In this paper, an approach to monitor the area of the HFO spill around a shipwreck is made using a bottom backscattering strength (BBS) obtained by a multibeam echosounder (MBES). As a case study, the s/s Stuttgart wreck located in the Gulf of Gdansk (Poland) is verified. Two different measurement campaigns have been carried out in shallow waters using low (190 kHz) and high (420 kHz) MBES frequency. The results indicate that the polluted area around s/s Stuttgart was estimated at 49.1 ha, which is around 18.3% more in comparison to the geological surveys made four years earlier.Peer reviewe

    本研究旨在探討日本鰻之銀化過程中,年齡、體長、體重、季節及體脂率之變化,以及其生理意義。研究上使用之標本採自高屏溪下游,採集時間自1998年11月至1999年11月。根據日本鰻外表體色與生殖腺之發育程度,將雌鰻分為黃鰻期 (yellow stage)、銀化前期 (pre-silver stage)與銀化期 (silver stage) 三個發育階段;雄鰻則僅分成黃鰻期與銀化期二個階段。結果發現,銀化前期之雌鰻,大部分係出現在夏季,而銀化期者不論雌雄其出現高峰係在冬季及早春。日本鰻之平均銀化體長,雄鰻為54.8 ± 1.8 cm,雌鰻為63.1 ± 1.5 cm,雌鰻體長大於雄鰻 (p0.05)。平均銀化體脂率,雄鰻為17.0 ± 1.0 %,雌鰻為 17.6 ± 0.7 %,雌雄間無顯著性差異 (p>0.05)。銀化前期之雌鰻,其體長、體重、體脂率及年齡與銀鰻者皆無顯著差異 (p>0.05)。日本鰻在成長過程中,不論雌雄其體長、體重、年齡以及體脂率間均具顯著相關 (p<0.05)。本研究結果顯示,日本鰻銀化的啟動,受到季節之影響,且需要達到一定的體型、年齡以及體脂率

    Bulk synthesis of Zn3_3WN4_4 via solid-state metathesis

    Ternary nitrides are of growing technological importance, with applications as semiconductors, catalysts, and magnetic materials; however, new synthetic tools are needed to advance materials discovery efforts. Here, we show that Zn3_3WN4_4 can be synthesized via metathesis reactions between Li6_6WN4_4 and ZnX2X_2 (XX = Br, Cl, F). In situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry show that the reaction onset is correlated with the ZnX2X_2 melting point and that product purity is inversely correlated with the reaction's exothermicity. High resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction measurements show that this bulk synthesis produces a structure with substantial cation ordering, as opposed to the disordered structure initially discovered via thin film sputtering. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy reveals that Zn3_3WN4_4 powders exhibit two optical absorption onsets at 2.5 eV and 4.0 eV, indicating wide-bandgap semiconducting behavior and suggesting a small amount of structural disorder. We hypothesize that this synthesis strategy is generalizable because many potential Li-MM-N precursors (where MM is a metal) are available for synthesizing new ternary nitride materials. This work introduces a promising synthesis strategy that will accelerate the discovery of novel functional ternary nitrides and other currently inaccessible materials

    OBSERVATION OF DIPOLE-BOUND STATE AND HIGH-RESOLUTION PHOTOELECTRON IMAGING OF COLD ACETATE ANIONS

    We report the observation of a dipole-bound state and a high-resolution photoelectron imaging study of cryogenically cooled acetate anions (CH3_{3}COO^{-}). Both high-resolution non-resonant and resonant photoelectron spectra via the dipole-bound state of CH3_{3}COO^{-} are obtained. The binding energy of the dipole-bound state relative to the detachment threshold is determined to be 53 pm8pm{8} wn. The electron affinity of the chem{CH_3COObullet} neutral radical is measured accurately as 26 236 pm8pm{8} wn (3.2528 pm0.0010pm{ 0.0010} eV) using high-resolution photoelectron imaging. This accurate electron affinity is validated by observation of autodetachment from two vibrational levels of the dipole-bound state of CH3_{3}COO^{-}. Excitation spectra to the dipole-bound states yield rotational profiles, allowing the rotational temperature of the trapped CH3_{3}COO^{-} anions to be evaluated 1^{1}. [1] D. L. Huang, G. Z.
