Evaluation of the Thermal-Hydraulic Operating Limits of HEU-LEU Transition Cores for the MIT Research Reactor
The MIT Research Reactor (MITR) is in the process of conducting a design study to
convert from High Enrichment Uranium (HEU) fuel to Low Enrichment Uranium (LEU)
fuel. The currently selected LEU fuel design contains 18 plates per element, compared to
the existing HEU design of 15 plates per element. A transitional conversion strategy,
which consists of replacing three HEU elements with fresh LEU fuel elements in each
fuel cycle, is proposed. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the thermo-hydraulic
safety margins and to determine the operating power limits of the MITR for each mixed
core configuration.
The analysis was performed using PLTEMP/ANL ver 3.5, a program developed
for thermo-hydraulic calculations of research reactors. Two correlations were used to
model the friction pressure drop and enhanced heat transfer of the finned fuel plates: the
Carnavos correlation for friction factor and heat transfer, and the Wong Correlation for
friction factor with a constant heat transfer enhancement factor of 1.9. With these
correlations, the minimum onset of nucleate boiling (ONB) margins of the hottest fuel
plates were evaluated in nine different core configurations, the HEU core, the LEU core
and seven mixed cores that consist of both HEU and LEU elements. The maximum radial
power peaking factors were assumed at 2.0 for HEU and 1.76 for LEU in all the analyzed
core configurations.
The calculated results indicate that the HEU fuel elements yielded lower ONB
margins than LEU fuel elements in all mixed core configurations. In addition to full
coolant channels, side channels next to the support plates that form side coolant channels were analyzed and found to be more limiting due to higher flow resistance. The
maximum operating powers during the HEU to LEU transition were determined by
maintaining the minimum ONB margin corresponding to the homogeneous HEU core at
6 MW. The recommended steady-state power is 5.8 MW for all transitional cores if the
maximum radial peaking is adjacent to a full coolant channel and 4.9 MW if the

Aspidistra stenophylla C.R.Lin et R.C.Hu, sp. nov. (Figs. 1, 2) Type: — CHINA. Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Jingxi County, Tongde town, limestone mountains, alt. 780 m, 12 May 2012, Chun-Rui Lin 1036 (holotype, IBK!; isotype, IBK!). Herbs perennial, evergreen, rhizomatous. Rhizome creeping, subterete, 9–10 mm thick, covered with scales, nodes densely. Roots numerous. Vaginal leaves 4–5, 2– 6 cm long, purple-red, becoming black-brown when dry. Leaves solitary; petiole stiffly upright, 9–22 cm long, 2 mm thick, adaxially sulcate; leaf blade linear, 50–60 cm long, 1.5– 2.5 cm wide, dark green, base tapering into petiole, apex acuminate, margin entire, midvein distinct, lateral veins conspicuous when dried. Peduncle purple-red, 1.5–3 cm long, with 4–6 bracts; bracts gradually wider from base to top of peduncle, white with purple-red spots, 3–5 mm long, ca 5 mm wide, obtuse at apex. Flower solitary; perigone urceolate, ca 15 mm long, dark purple, adaxially finely papillose; lobes 6, triangular, slightly curved inward, 6–7 mm long, 5–6 mm wide at base, adaxially purple-red and with light yellow apex, with two prominent keels from top to the middle of perigone tube; perigone tube 8–9 mm long and 14–15 mm in diameter, adaxially dark purple. Stamens 6, opposite to the perigone lobes, inserted at the bottom of the perigone tube, significantly lower than stigma; anthers oblong, ca 2 mm long and 1 mm wide, filaments ca 1 mm long. Pistil mushroom-shaped, purple-red, ca 1 cm long, ovary inconspicuous, style short, cylindrical, ca 2 mm long and 1 mm in diameter, stigma peltate, subrotundate, ca 1 cm in diameter, upper surface with 3 whitish, ca 1 mm high, “ V ” shaped ribs, and 3 purple-red radial ribs from center to margin, slightly irregularly undulate at margin. Berry subglobose, 10–15 mm in diameter, slightly tuberculate. flowering in May to June, and fruiting in the next year from February to April. Distribution and ecology: —This new species is currently known only from Jingxi County in southwestern Guangxi, China. It grows on a limestone slopes, under evergreen broad-leaved forest at 700–800 m altitude. Taxonomic relationships: — Aspidistra stenophylla is similar to A. omeiensis Zhu & Zhang (1981: 386) and A. linearifoli a Wan & Huang (1987: 220) in leaves linear, perigone dark purple, but differs by having perigone urceolate and adaxially densely papillose, lobes slightly curved inward, stigma upper surface with 3 whitish, ca 1 mm high, “V” shaped ribs. Change in deformation pattern on the Hengchun peninsula after 2006 Pingtung earthquake doublet and activity of the Hengchun fault
臺灣位於菲律賓海板塊及歐亞板塊之間,為活躍的弧陸碰撞帶,活動構造引起的災害性地震可能危及許多重大建設。例如位於本研究區域的核能第三發電廠鄰近位於恆春半島的恆春斷層。因此,了解恆春斷層的活動性和孕震潛能即是重要的防災評估議題。前人藉由精密水準測量的研究中發現,恆春半島的垂直抬升速率在2006/12/26屏東外海地震之後有明顯的改變,跨斷層速率增加至原本的2-3倍,且改變的抬升形貌持續約3-6年。為確認2006屏東外海地震和地表抬升速率改變之間存在觸發關係的假設,本研究利用庫侖靜態應力轉移模型,得出恆春斷層位於靜態應力增加的區域,增加值約為0.2-0.6 bar,驗證觸發關係的假設。本研究進一步使用Okada (1985)彈性半無限空間錯位模型,以正演方式搜尋得不同時段,斷層參數及斷層面上的滑移量,求取地表模擬變形與觀測值的最佳擬合。另外,為補足精密水準與GPS觀測在研究區空間上分布之不足,本研究使用時間段分別為1996-2000年ERS (C波段)和2006-2010年ALOS(L波段)衛載的SAR影像,以PS-InSAR技術分析兩時段內的恆春區域地殼變形形貌,並沿恆春斷層走向由北至南切出六個視衛星方向變形剖面,分析此變形剖面與已知活動構造的關聯性,發現恆春半島的地表變形除了恆春斷層的活動與恆春西台地持續西傾的影響之外,在恆春西台地與恆春谷地之間有一圓穹狀突起,與地質調查結果相比較,可以發現正好對應於泥灌入體分布的範圍,推測為泥灌入體所致。因此PS-InSAR所呈現的結果,提供泥岩貫入作用亦在恆春半島地表變形扮演重要的角色。Taiwan is situated in the active arc–continent collision region between the Philippine Sea plate and Eurasia plate. The destructive earthquakes induced from active structures could poses threats on infrastructures such as the 3rd Nuclear Power plant, which is seated close to the Hengchun fault in Hengchun Peninsula, southernmost of Taiwan. Thus, understanding the activity of the Hengchun fault and seismogenic potential is a crucial topic on assessment of the seismic hazards. On the decadal time scale geodetic observation, previous studies suggested that the surface uplift rate on Hengchun peninsula based on leveling measurements was changed significantly after the 26th December 2006 Pingtung offshore earthquake doublet.The uplift rate across the Hengchun fault can be 2-3 times than the original rate. Furthermore, the changed slip pattern lasted for 3-6 years. In order to verify the hypothesis of triggering relationship between 2006 Pingtung earthquake doublet and the influence on crustal deformation in the surrounding fault systems, we adopt Coulomb static stress change model to characterize the deformation occurred on the Hengchun fault. The results indicate Hengchun fault fall in the stress increasing zone, providing a plausible evidence for the hypothesis of static stress transfer. Furthermore, the elastic half-space dislocation model is used to forward slip distribution on the Hengchun fault and find the best-fit fault parameter as well as the slip distribution on the fault patches associated with the surface deformation. Moreover, in this study, we attempt to apply ERS (C-band) and ALOS (L-band) satellite-based Persistent Scatterers SAR Interferometry (PS-InSAR), in the duration of the 1996-2000 and 2006-2010 respectively, to detect regional crustal deformation patterns. Six profiles perpendicular to the Hengchun fault are made to analyze the relationship between deformation and active structures. A dome-shaped deformation pattern between western Hengchun fault and Hengchun Valley is coincide with the mud diaper inferred from geological survey and seismic profile. The results suggest that the mud diapirism should play an important role on the deformation on Hengchun Peninsula
LIN-2 and FRM-3 are required to maintain locomotory behaviour.
(A) Genomic structure of lin-2 and frm-3 locus, mutant allele characterization, and protein architecture for LIN-2 and FRM-3. The whole promoter region of lin-2a and part of the kinase domain of LIN-2A is deleted in the e1309 mutants. The FERM domain in both frm-3a and frm-3b is deleted in the gk585 mutants. Syb1019 and syb1036 are stop codons in lin-2 and frm-3 that inactivate the expression of lin-2a and lin-2b, and frm-3a and frm-3b. (E, F) Locomotion speed is reduced by the loss of LIN-2 and FRM-3. To measure locomotion speed, young adult animals were washed with a drop of PBS and then transferred to fresh NGM plates with no bacterial lawn (30 worms per plate). Worm movement recordings (under room temperature 22°C) were started 10 min after the worms were transferred. A 2 min digital video of each plate was captured at 3.75 Hz frame rate by WormLab System (MBF Bioscience). Average speed and tracks were generated for each animal using WormLab software. To confirm the repeatability of the data, the locomotion speed was measured in two independent experiments in two days. For each mutant, around 10–40 animals were analyzed in one experiment. Significance was tested for each experiment. Data are mean ± SEM (**, p p < 0.001 when compared to wild type; n.s., non-significant; one-way ANOVA).
