The Information Flow Foundation for Fusing Inferences
A practical and efficient approach to hybrid reasoning is to fuse different specialised systems that are designed particularly for different types of problems. We provide formal treatments to the fusion of inferences using information flow as the theoretical framework. The fusion of DL- and Constraint-based systems is used as an example to demonstrate the applicability
Facilitating Lightweight Consensuses in P2P Environments
Traditional ontology mapping techniques are not strictly applicable in a dynamic and distributed environment (e.g. P2P and pervasive computing) in which on-the-fly alignments are sought after. We propose a theoretical framework that collaborates the logic formalisms with collaboratively created web repositories. A graph clustering algorithm is to discover, from concept definitions, the “feature” vectors that uniquely identify concepts; web repositories are used to understand the implications of these features. Such a combination solidifies an on-demand and approximate mechanism that emerges a context-dependent and task specific consensus among heterogeneous participants of an information exchange task
An investigation of the effects of curvatures on natural vibration characteristics of curved beams and plates
Curved structures are mostly investigated through the numerical method. In the numerical model, the curved beam or plate is easily simulated by assembled elements. Although the approximate solution can be obtained, numerical results are inadequate to demonstrate the effect of the curvature on the whole system. In order to reveal such effect and implicative mechanism of the curvature, an analytical way needs to be proved applicable to the curved structure. The present thesis thus develops the perturbation method to analyze the natural behaviour of curved beam structures. The governing equations for curved beams with the variable and arbitrary curvature are derived. The complex parameter introduced by the curvature is modified by the perturbation method. Simplified equations physically reveal the feature of the mode transition, impacts in terms of boundary conditions, etc. due to the change of curvatures. Based on the asymptotic solutions, the singly curved plate is analyzed by using the Rayleigh- Ritz method. The analysis is further developed to the laminated compositeiicurved beam. Examples present extra characteristics brought by the composite materials. In order to support the analytical solutions, finite element models of the curved beam with different type of varying curvatures are established. Numerical results illustrate more phenomena in transition of mode shape following the change of curvatures and the wave propagation behaviour of curved beams
CMS: CROSI Mapping System - Results of the 2005 Ontology Alignment Contest
In this results report we summarize our experiences from running the CROSI Mapping System (CMS) over three test cases for this year's OAEI contest: bibliography, Web directories and medical ontologies alignment case studies. CMS successfully parsed and aligned all input ontologies in all three case studies. We also elaborate on the insights gained and potential research directions towards building more robust alignment systems to cope with the increasing diversity of alignment requirement

Semantic Metrics
In the context of the Semantic Web, many ontology-related operations, e.g., ontology ranking, segmentation, alignment, articulation, reuse, evaluation, etc., can be boiled down to one fundamental operation: computing the similarity and/or dissimilarity among ontological entities, and in some cases among ontologies. In this paper, we review conventional metrics for computing distance and we propose a series of metrics conceived purposely for semantics rich entities. We give a formal account of semantic metrics drawn from a variety of research disciplines and enrich them with formalisation based on Description Logics. We argue that concept-based metrics can be aggregated to produce numeric distances at ontology-level. We speculate on the usability of our ideas in potential ontology engineering tasks
