Site formation processes at Etzanoa (14CO3): Preliminary geoarchaeological flotation investigation
Presented to the 20th Annual Symposium on Graduate Research and Scholarly Projects (GRASP) held at the Rhatigan Student Center, Wichita State University, April 26, 2024.Research completed in the Department of Anthropology, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.Etzanoa, also known as the Cowley County Country Club Site (14C03), was occupied by the Ancestral Wichita throughout the Great Bend Aspect, Lower Walnut Focus (approx. 1425-1700 CE). Wichita State University has been excavating a portion of the site with a high density of domestic features, especially storage pits, since 2017. Utilizing geoarchaeological flotations of samples from surface to 120 centimeter-deep profile, this project intends to identify areas of anthropogenic activity and stratigraphic variation. Through the analysis of these recovered microbotanical and material remnants, researchers are better enabled to understand the depositional history of the locale.Graduate School, Academic Affairs, University Librarie
Using augmented reality to communicate archaeological findings
Poster and abstract presented at the FYRE in STEM Showcase, 2025.Research project completed at the Department of Anthropology.Augmented reality is a convenient tool that can be utilized to visualize detailed archaeological data to the public. In instances where human impact has disrupted the preservation of physical locations, augmented reality provides an immersive alternative without direct contact, given a previous record of the site. This research aims to enhance public engagement about the damage done to an archaeological site in Khirbat-en-Nahas, Jordan through a digital environment. First, we collected both 2D and 3D images of the site representing its original appearance and recent damage caused by bulldozers. We then created an interactive visualization, using Adobe Aero, a user-friendly augmented reality production experience, to display these findings. Both of the assets were imported into Adobe Aero and arranged to represent a layout that shows the contrast between both images. The project demonstrated Adobe Aero's effectiveness in visualizing the data by displaying side-by-side images with annotated callouts that highlighted the changes. Viewers can engage with the experience by viewing the previous image and tapping on the site to reveal a more recent version. The first image captures the site in its original form, while the second image depicts the damage done to it. This immersive augmented reality experience communicates the details of the site's condition in a manner that is engaging and easily comprehensible to the public
AI archaeology: Using AI to write python for GIS
Presented to the 23rd Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Forum (URCAF) held at the Rhatigan Student Center, Wichita State University, April 12, 2024.The learning curve for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and programming languages poses a challenge despite internet access. This research asserts that leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) can empower beginners to conduct intricate GIS analyses by constructing Python code through simple commands. Our goal is to make archaeology more accessible, significantly advancing the field technologically. GIS and LLMs represent the forefront of this discipline, and by providing easy access without extensive training, we open the door to a broader audience. This study systematically tests several variables and compares different LLMs, aiming to provide a comprehensive perspective on the role of AI in advancing archaeology. Preliminary findings show that using LLMs to generate Python significantly cuts down on the time needed to conduct various geospatial analyses, as we begin to create outlines that will narrow the time for any beginners interested in utilizing these tools to expedite their work. Moving forward, vigorous experimentation will continue to be conducted for proofs of the research as we continue to see the potential of LLMs in not only archaeology, but other fields across academia
The impact of fluvial erosion on archaeological sites
Second place winner of poster presentations for Social Sciences & Humanities at the 24th Annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Forum (URCAF) held in the Woolsey Hall, Wichita State University, April 25, 2025.Fluvial erosion is a dynamic site formation process that has the potential to degrade and destroy archaeological sites worldwide and especially in Kansas. Fortunately, fluvial erosion can be monitored utilizing remote sensing techniques, including water indices detected through Landsat and Sentinel imagery, linear regression, and change detection algorithms. In this study, we systematically analyze the spatial and temporal dynamics of river behavior across Kansas from 1984-2024 using these approaches. By correlating shifts in water dynamics with the locations of known archaeological sites from the Kansas State Historical Society (KSHS) database, our approach identifies archaeological sites that have eroded or are eroding and informs predictive models for future erosion. Through these methods, our research found twenty-three (23) archaeological sites at immediate risk of erosion, eroding, or eroded. This study addresses the urgent need to safeguard these cultural resources by identifying critical erosion zones where fluvial forces threaten to permanently erase remnants of our past
The American Indian Institute: Native American founded education
Thesis (M.A.)-- Wichita State University, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dept. of AnthropologyThe American Indian Institute (AII), a Federal Native American Boarding School that operated in Wichita, Kansas from 1915 to 1935, was founded with the unique goals of integrating traditional Native American knowledge and traditions in a Euro-American educational setting. Founded by Ho-Chunk Native American Dr. Henry Roe Cloud , the AII also worked to promote higher education and Christian leadership amongst Native American youth at the time. Spanning over 80 acres, the AII consisted of several dormitory buildings, barns for agricultural equipment, kitchens, and other facilities for the students’ education and care. Presently, the property has been heavily developed; divided into plats for neighborhoods, a church, and a fraternity.
Currently, there is no archaeological research on the AII, easily accessible information on the AII is extremely limited, and very little awareness of its existence in the local community. These gaps necessitate research that both engages the community and fills the gaps in knowledge of the Institute. If archaeological investigations are to be conducted in the future, the research must be collaborative from the beginning. To facilitate this, information covering the AII and relevant additional topics was compiled and shared with the local Native American community. By distributing the information and including a feedback survey, we were able to gauge the general level of interest amongst the Native American community in Wichita, Kansas. This research also provides a nuanced discussion of archaeological stakeholders related to the AII
Words of power: An anthropological study of populist language and identity construction
Thesis (M.A.)-- Wichita State University, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dept. of AnthropologyPopulist movements have reshaped political landscapes worldwide, often intensifying societal polarization and challenging democratic norms. At the core of these movements lies the strategic use of language to mobilize support, construct collective identities, and reinforce an "us vs. them" narrative. This thesis examines the linguistic strategies of populist leaders through the lens of cultural anthropology, focusing on how rhetoric influences the masses and fosters public support. While populism can be studied across multiple disciplines, this research emphasizes its cultural-linguistic dimensions. Populist leaders construct cultural identities by appealing to shared values, symbols, and historical narratives, using language as a tool to create emotionally resonant movements. Their rhetoric simplifies complex issues, amplifies polarization, and undermines traditional institutions, shaping political realities through repetition, emotional appeals, and performative delivery.
Through a comparative analysis of Donald Trump’s "Make America Great Again" movement and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s Justice and Development Party, this study explores how populist leaders adapt language to distinct cultural and historical contexts. Trump’s rhetoric draws on American nationalism and protectionism, while Erdoğan intertwines Turkish nationalism with Islamic identity and Ottoman history, both leverage emotion to reinforce their narratives. By analyzing speeches, social media posts, and interviews, this research reveals how populist rhetoric constructs crises, justifies radical actions, and shapes ideological divisions. While tailored to specific contexts, core elements of populist discourse; anti-elite sentiment, emotional mobilization, and societal polarization; remain consistent across cases
