Alex Houston
This photograph shows 13 year old Alex Houston (1932-2017) of Hendersonville, North Carolina with puppet. Founder and director of the Mountain Youth Jamboree, Hubert H. Hayes (1901-1964) auditioned and directed youth to perform in folk dance, music, and folk and ballad singing. The jamboree was held in the Asheville City Auditorium (now known as Thomas Wolfe Auditorium) from 1948 to 1973, and Hayes’ wife, Leona Trantham Hayes (1913-1989) continued to direct the program after his death in 1964. Hubert Hayes was an author, playwright, and alumni of Duke University

Chrisdya Houston Interview
Chrisdya Houston (Class of 1996) was interviewed by Laurence Lundy via the Zoom internet-based video conferencing software on November 11, 2020. During her interview, Ms. Houston describes her childhood in Dallas and her experiences at Leslie A. Stemmons Elementary and Alex W. Spence Talented and Gifted Academy. She studied in the Man and his Environment cluster at Skyline Career Development Center and chose SMU as her top choice for university. While at SMU, Ms. Houston majored in journalism, psychology, and sociology. She pledged to the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and was involved with the Association of Black Students throughout her time at SMU. After her sophomore year, she interned at Young Audiences of Greater Dallas. After graduating from SMU in 1996, Ms. Houston worked as a residential treatment counselor for youth, and then worked in public relations before pursuing a career in teaching. She received her Master's from the University of Arlington in 2012 and has worked for Dallas ISD as an ESL specialist and, at the time of the interview, as part of the dyslexia department. In her interview, Ms. Houston discusses how race relations manifested during her time on campus, and how her experiences at SMU helped her realize the importance of political activism. She returned to SMU in 2018 to complete the cognitive academic language program at the Simmons School of Education.
