Jon Jerde’s Horton Plaza Mall: contextual commercialism in the tradition of Charles W. Moore
Isenstadt, SandyCompleted in 1985, architect Jon Jerde’s (1940-2015) Horton Plaza mall is an urban fairy tale that stands as both a high point of postmodern commercial architecture and a living expression of the theories of postmodern pioneer Charles W. Moore (1925-1993). The mall, intended to revive and reinvent downtown San Diego, grew from the modernist urban planning and retail theories of shopping center pioneer Victor Gruen (1903-1980), yet presents itself in a distinctly postmodern form. Horton Plaza’s colorful architecture embodies the postmodern movement’s shift from anti-establishment origins in the academy toward its later, commercial flowering. While Jerde made his career designing malls and entertainment architecture, Horton Plaza stands apart among the architect’s work for both its visual richness and its engagement with the larger architectural discourse. In particular, the aesthetics, materials, form, and focus on placemaking demonstrated at Horton Plaza reflect the philosophies of Charles W. Moore. Horton Plaza and its place within Moore’s sprawling legacy is the focus of this thesis, which speculates about the continued impact of Moore and postmodernism’s commercial turn on today’s built environment at a moment when Horton Plaza itself faces almost certain demolition.M.A.University of Delaware, Winterthur Program in American Material Cultur

Drift waves and transport
Drift waves occur universally in magnetized plasmas producing the dominant mechanism for the transport of particles, energy and momentum across magnetic field lines. A wealth of information obtained from quasistationary laboratory experiments for plasma confinement is reviewed for drift waves driven unstable by density gradients, temperature gradients and trapped particle effects. The modern understanding of Bohm transport and the role of sheared flows and magnetic shear in reducing the transport to the gyro-Bohm rate are explained and illustrated with large scale computer simulations. The types of mixed wave and vortex turbulence spontaneously generated in nonuniform plasmas are derived with reduced magnetized fluid descriptions. The types of theoretical descriptions reviewed include weak turbulence theory, Kolmogorov anisotropic spectral indices, and the mixing length. A number of standard turbulent diffusivity formulas are given for the various space-time Scales of the drift-wave turbulent mixing. [S0034-6861(99)00803-X].Physic

Letter from Valentine Horton to Alden Partridge, 28 January 1830
Valentine Horton writes from Middletown, Connecticut, to Alden Partridge in Washington, D.C. His plans preclude his accepting Partridge's offer of operating an academy in Fayetteville, NC; proposes Partridge approach T. B. Ransom on the subject; urges Partridge to support W. E. Jones' application to West Point; mentions the Methodist University (Wesleyan University) as well as Major Holbrook (John Holbrook?), Mr. Johnson (Edwin Ferry Johnson?), and the death of Elisha Dunbar.Transcription by Joel Kindrick. Co ma z tym wspólnego szkoła? Krytyczna analiza roli szkoły w kontekście zjawiska bullyingu
This theoretical article addresses the compound word school bullying by asking the question, ‘what’s school got to do with it?’ Despite a vast amount of research into the phenomenon of school bullying, there has been relatively little focus on the importance of the school half of the open compound. Taking a critical educational perspective to school bullying (Horton, 2018), the article considers the importance of school to school bullying by discussing the social ecology of school and particularly the importance of the school environment (Bronfenbrenner, 1979). In doing so, the article uses examples from a recently completed ethnographic research project conducted in Swedish schools to elucidate the importance of key features of schools (Duncan, 2013; Eriksson et al., 2002), the different layers of schools (Gordon & Lahelma, 1996), as well as the environmental and structural elements of schools (Zumbrunn et al., 2013). The article provides an empirically-based theoretical framework for critically addressing the school in school bullying and argues that school bullying cannot be adequately addressed by only focusing on the behavioural side of the open compound. School is not simply the setting for school bullying. School means more than that.W artykule podjęto temat złożonego zjawiska bullyingu – prześladowania i dręczenia szkolnego. Postawiono pytanie: „Co ma z tym wspolnego szkoła?” Pomimo licznych badań nad bullyingiem w szkole, stosunkowo niewiele uwagi poświęcono roli, jaką kontekst szkolny odgrywa w powstawaniu i utrzymywaniu bullyingu. Przyjmując krytyczną perspektywę edukacyjną (Horton, 2018), autor rozważa rolę szkoły w tym zjawisku, analizując społeczną ekologię, w szczególności złożone środowisko szkolne (Bronfenbrenner, 1979). W artykule wykorzystano przykłady z niedawno zakończonego etnograficznego projektu badawczego przeprowadzonego w szwedzkich szkołach, aby wyjaśnić znaczenie kluczowych cech szkół (Duncan, 2013; Eriksson i in., 2002), rożnych warstw i poziomów w szkołach (Gordon & Lahelma, 1996), a także elementów środowiskowych i strukturalnych (Zumbrunn i in., 2013).
