Variations on the Author
No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

No full textVanuit een beschrijving van beleidsanalyse in algemene zin en de gebruikelijke terminologie en definiering ervan, wordt toegewerkt naar een specificatie van de voor de discussienota 'Kustverdediging na 1990' gehanteerde beleidsanalytische aanpak. Hierin wordt de doelstelling van de studie uitgewerkt, wordt de uitgangssituatie gespecificeerd en worden de randvoorwaarden beschreven. De gewenste ontwikkelingen ten aanzien van de kustverdediging en de relatie met de maatschappelijke funkties in het kustgebied worden vastgelegd in strategieen. Wanneer ook de maatregelen die deze strategieen konkreet maken worden ingevuld leidt dit tot (beleids) alternatieven. Tevens wordt aangegeven welke ontwikkelingen de inspanningen die voor de kustverdediging de komende decennia nodig zijn, in hoofdzaak bepalen. Deze worden uitgedrukt in scenario's en betreffen vooral de hydrometeorologische randvoorwaarden (zeespiegel, klimaat) en de morfologische ontwikkelingen (gemiddeld, ongunstig). Tot slot worden de criteria beschreven op basis waarvan de ontwikkelingen bij diverse beleidskeuzes kunnen worden vergeleken. Het betreft kosten, verliezen aan duinareaal, e.d. Ten behoeve van de integrale analyse is het systeemanalytische model KUSTBEL (TR-17 ) ontwikkeld waarmee op relatief eenvoudige wijze voor de verschillende beleidsalternatieven de resulterende kustontwikkeling en de effecten daarvan op veiligheid en functies kunnen worden geanalyseerd en vergeleken. De feitelijke uitvoering van de beleidsanalyse richt zich op de analyse van beleidsalternatieven aan de hand van concrete rekengevallen, die in KUSTBEL worden ingevoerd (uitgezonderd de strategie Zeewaarts). Als onderdeel van de analyse is tevens een gevoeligheidsanalyse uitgevoerd om de invloed te kunnen inschatten van de onzekerheden die samenhangen met de beschikbare kennis en informatie.Kustnot
Feasible Multivariate Nonparametric Estimation Using Weak Separability
No full textOne of the main practical problems of nonparametric regression estimation is the curse of dimensionality. The curse of dimensionality arises because nonparametric regression estimates are dependent variable averages local to the point at which the regression function is to be estimated. The number of observations `local' to the point of estimation decreases exponentially with the number of dimensions. The consequence is that the variance of unconstrained nonparametric regression estimators of multivariate regression functions is often so great that the unconstrained nonparametric regression estimates are of no practical use. In this paper I propose a new estimation method of weakly separable multivariate nonparametric regression functions. Weak separability is a weaker condition than required by other dimension--reduction techniques, although similar asymptotic variance reductions obtain. Indeed, weak separability is weaker than generalized additivity (see Hardle and Linton, 1996 and Horowitz, 1998). The proposed estimator is relatively easy to compute. Theoretical results in this paper include (i) a uniform law of large numbers for marginal integration estimators, (ii) a uniform law of large numbers for marginal summation estimators, (iii) a uniform law of large numbers for my new nonparametric regression estimator for weakly separable regression functions, (iv) both a uniform strong and weak law of large numbers for U-statistics, and (v) three central limit theorems for my nonparametric regression estimator for weakly separable regression functions.

No full textHet doel van de discussienota 'Kustverdediging na 1990' is het voorbereiden van beleidskeuzen met betrekking tot de landelijke aanpak van de kustverdediging. Een groot aantal afwegingen en keuzen speelt hierbij een rol. Het is noodzakelijk het gehele scala aan mogelijkheden te vertalen in een aantal goed gedefinieerde beleidsalternatieven. Deze moeten systematisch worden onderzocht om tot een vergelijkende beoordeling te kunnen komen. Gekozen is voor de ontwikkeling van een systeemanalytisch model waarmee beleidsalternatieven doorgerekend kunnen worden. Dit model heet KUSTBEL. Het systeemanalytische model maakt het mogelijk een analyse van het kustsysteem uit te voeren. Hierbij wordt een voorspelde kustontwlkkeling getoetst aan maatschappelijke eisen die zijn gespecificeerd in de te onderzoeken beleidsalternatieven. Het model voert de berekeningen uit en bepaalt de gevolgen van een beleidsalternatief in termen van kosten en baten.Kustnot
Kazakh and Russian identities in transition : the case of Kazakhstan
No full textThis dissertation concerns the development and interaction of Kazakh and Russian identities in post-Soviet Kazakhstan. My research questions were: (1) what was the character of these identities in 2003/04 (the time of my research); (2) how have these identities interacted to form dominant and subordinate identities, and (3) how can the character of these identities and their interaction be explained? In order to research these questions I used a general questionnaire followed up by open ended interviews of a representative sample of Kazakhstani citizens. While my research findings show continued uncertainty and provisionality in both Kazakh and Russian identities, which confirms the broad trend of previous surveys, they also indicate signs of change in the emergence of more consolidated dominant and subordinate identities in the less Russianised areas like Chimkent and among the younger generation, while by contrast the older generations of Russians, particularly in the more Russianised areas, find it difficult to accept the delegitimation of their dominant status as reflected in the nationalizing policies pursued by the new state. In theoretical terms these findings confirm the importance of the study of ethnic stratification, which has not received sufficient attention in previous research in this area. In explaining these developments I found that the character of the transition and also of the ‘prior regime type’ in Kazakhstan has had a significant effect on ethnic relationships, but also that international factors, such as those presented in Brubaker’s triadic model, and internal factors, elaborated by Schermerhorn and Horowitz, were also important

No full textIn 1990 is de sterkte van het systeem van waterkeringen van ons land tegen de bedreiging door de zee op zgn. delta-veilig niveau gebracht. Deze veiligheid zal echter onder druk komen te staan door de huidige morfologische ontwikkelingen van onze kust, waarbij zeespiegelrijzing een belangrijke rol speelt. Om het verkregen veiligheidsniveau te kunnen handhaven en het kustgedrag beter te leren begrijpen en te voorspellen, is het noodzakelijk ons kustsysteem en de factoren die het beïnvloeden nauwlettend in de gaten te houden. Doel van deze studie is na te gaan hoe we dat in het licht van de huidige kennis het beste kunnen doen. Het huidige meetprogramma wordt daartoe beschreven en geevalueerd. Waar nodig worden aanpassingen voorgesteld. Tevens wordt een blik op de verdere toekomst geworpen in het hoofdstuk over remote sensing technieken.Kustnot
