The teaching of English in Hong Kong from problems to solutions

    No full text
The issue concerning English education in Hong Kong has been a matter of much debate. This dissertation comprises two parts. Part I (Chapters 1-3) is a description of the problems and Part II (Chapters 4 and 5) a search for solutions. Chapter 1 gives a factual picture of the language problems and the responses of both the government and the public to them. Chapter 2 is a study of the linguistic situation in Hong Kong, having a discussion particularly about the nature of bilingual ism. Chapter 3 analyses the language learning difficulties and the actual needs of the learners. Chapter 4 is an attempt to solve the problem by locating the proper position of English learning in the language education of Hong Kong. Chapter 5 suggests a possible solution to maintain, and hopefully to improve the teaching quality, by adapting the communicative approach to the Hong Kong situation

A Structural Investigation into the Price and Wage Dynamics in Hong Kong

    No full text
This paper estimates the degree of wage and price flexibility of the Hong Kong economy with the use of a stylised dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model developed for the Hong Kong economy. It also studies the factors contributing to deflation in Hong Kong following the Asian financial crisis (i.e. during the period from 1998 to 2003) and finds that declining import prices were the main culprit. Consistent with earlier studies on the subject and anecdotal evidence, wages and prices in Hong Kong are found to be (relatively) flexible.DSGE, Bayesian Estimation, Nominal Rigidities

Factors affecting motivation to learn English: the perspective of newly arrived Hong Kong students

    No full text
The aim of the study is to examine and evaluate how socio-cultural factors and demographic characteristics of a group of newly arrived Hong Kong (NAHK) students affect their motivation to learn English in Hong Kong. This study is conceptualised based on Dornyei’s (1998) motivation framework and two additional components, parent and culture specific motivation components, are also added onto the framework in order to suit the purpose of this study. Data were collected from two complementary sources: questionnaire and interviews. Questionnaire items were constructed based on the modification of Dornyei's motivational framework and questionnaires were distributed to 109 NAHK students' to collect their views on learning English in Hong Kong. In- depth semi-structured interviews were also conducted with 10 students to further investigate their motivation to lean English. Statistical data found that teachers have the greatest impact on NAHK students’ motivation to learn English. This result poses important pedagogical implications and considerations to educators in Hong Kong when developing curriculum and choosing materials. Statistical results also revealed parents played the least significant role in motivating NAHK students to learn English. However, the semi-structured interviews revealed another side of the story although parents could not assist their children's English learning academically but they supported their children's English learning both spiritually and financially. Several demographic characteristics like gender, age and place of birth were found to be crucial in influencing NAHK students' English learning motivation. The study describes the NAHK students' motivation to learn English in the hope that lights can be shed on the current teaching and learning practices and suggest implications for practice so that learner diversity in Hong Kong English learning classrooms can be catered

Cross-border Investment and Economic Integration: The Case of Guangdong Province and Hong Kong SAR

In this paper, we undertake a comparative study of the performance of local and foreign competitors’ manufacturing firms in a FDI-recipient region—Guangdong Province, China—and analyzes the policy implications of the comparison for the advanced, FDI-outflow region—Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). By highlighting changes in productivity that vary with changes in manufacturing firm ownership, we reveal that domestic firms have been catching up with their foreign counterparts, including Hong Kong-based firms, though foreign firms have successfully strengthened their dominating position in Guangdong’s manufacturing industry.Total Factor Productivity, Manufacturing Sectors, Asia, China, Guangdong, Hong Kong

Up-regulation of heme oxygenase-1 Improves endothelial functions by impairing endothelium-dependent contractions and enhancing endothelium-dependent hyperpolarizations

OBJECTIVE: Heme oxygenase (HO) attenuates the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) through its ability to degrade heme and produce carbon monoxide (CO), biliverdin/ bilirubin, and to release free iron. Up-regulation of HO lowers blood pressure in animals. However, the underlying mechanism is still unknown. The present study was designed to ...link_to_OA_fulltextThe 14th Annual Scientific Meetingof the Institute of Cardiovascular Science and Medicine, Hong Kong, China, 18 December 2010. Objective: Although, in Shen Zhen, a single disciplinary group such as neurosurgeons agree upon the management mainstay includes a multimodal approach of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, there is not broad involvement of the doctors from different fields. We assessed the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary group based treatment aiming to improve the survival rate of childhood central nervous system(CNS) malignancy. Method: This is a five-year retrospective review of the effect of our multidisciplinary treatment for pediatric CNS tumor at The University Of Hong Kong– Shen Zhen Hospital from 2013-2018. Eligible participants were children aged 0-14 years who attended the hospital and were given a multimodal therapy following a primary diagnosis of CNS tumors. The interventions include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. A CNS tumor warrants a referral to a neurosurgeon for biopsy, and gross total resection where possible. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are used as adjunct measures based on the histology of the tumor. The survival rate of children is evaluated. Result: There were 45 cases of childhood CNS tumors, includes 49% Medulloblastomas, 18% Embryonal tumors, 8%Ependymomas, and 20%Gliomas had been evaluated. Medulloblastomas shows the best outcome while Embryonal tumors including 4 atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors(ATRT), 3 embryonal tumor with multilayered rosettes (ETMR) and 1 central nervous system (CNS) embryonal tumor not otherwise specified (NOS), previously called CNS primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) shows the worst prognosis Conclusion: Multidisciplinary Group Based Treatment improves the childhood primary malignant central nervous system (CNS) tumors survival rate especially for Medulloblastoma

The Construction and Related Industries in a Changing Socio-Economic Environment: The Case of Hong Kong

Hong Kong is well known for its “housing market bubble”. Both theoretical and empirical studies point to the supply side being the “root of all evil”. This paper takes a preliminary step in understanding the supply side of the Hong Kong market by investigating the construction and related industries. After taking into consideration of the unusual public expenditure, the construction industry seems to be “normal” in international standard. Its relationship with the aggregate economy is also examined. Directions for future research are also suggested.housing, construction, government policy, employment, investment

Understanding sedimentation in the Song Hong–Yinggehai Basin, South China Sea

    No full text
The Cenozoic Song Hong–Yinggehai Basin in the South China Sea contains a large volume of sediment that has been used in previous studies, together with regional geomorphology, to argue for the existence of a large palaeodrainage system that connected eastern Tibet with the South China Sea. To test this and to understand the significance of sediment volumes deposited in the Song Hong–Yinggehai Basin, this study compared erosion histories of source regions with sediment volumes deposited during the two main stages in basin evolution spanning active rifting and subsidence (30–15.5 Ma) and postrift sedimentation (15.5 Ma to present). The study of basin provenance by detrital zircon U-Pb dating revealed Hainan was an important and continuous source of sediment, and a bedrock thermochronological study quantified its overall contribution to basin sedimentation. Comparison between the accumulated mass of basin sediment and volumes of eroded bedrock, calculated from apatite thermochronometry across the modern Red River drainage in northern Vietnam as well as Hainan Island, accounted for the bulk of sediment deposited since 30 Ma. Consequently, if an expanded paleodrainage ever existed it must have predated the Oligocene
