Understanding sedimentation in the Song Hong–Yinggehai Basin, South China Sea
The Cenozoic Song Hong–Yinggehai Basin in the South China Sea contains a large volume of sediment that has been used in previous studies, together with regional geomorphology, to argue for the existence of a large palaeodrainage system that connected eastern Tibet with the South China Sea. To test this and to understand the significance of sediment volumes deposited in the Song Hong–Yinggehai Basin, this study compared erosion histories of source regions with sediment volumes deposited during the two main stages in basin evolution spanning active rifting and subsidence (30–15.5 Ma) and postrift sedimentation (15.5 Ma to present). The study of basin provenance by detrital zircon U-Pb dating revealed Hainan was an important and continuous source of sediment, and a bedrock thermochronological study quantified its overall contribution to basin sedimentation. Comparison between the accumulated mass of basin sediment and volumes of eroded bedrock, calculated from apatite thermochronometry across the modern Red River drainage in northern Vietnam as well as Hainan Island, accounted for the bulk of sediment deposited since 30 Ma. Consequently, if an expanded paleodrainage ever existed it must have predated the Oligocene
Southern Chinese patients with systemic lupus erythematosus in Hong Kong have low vitamin D levels
BACKGROUND: Vitamin D insufficiency has been linked to pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. This study aimed to measure serum 25(OH)D level in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in Hong Kong and to evaluate association between serum 25(OH)D level and disease activity. METHODS: Serum 25(OH)D level was measured by radioimmunoassay in SLE patients and healthy controls. Lupus disease activity was determined by SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI), serum anti-dsDNA antibody, C3 and C4 levels. RESULTS: Fifty-two SLE patients with mean ± standard deviation disease duration of 15.5±8.6 years were recruited. Five patients had active lupus disease. Five (9.6%) patients had serum 25(OH)D levels <30 nmol/L. Serum 25(OH)D level was significantly lower in SLE patients compared to age- and sex-matched controls (n=52) [45.5±12.3 vs 51.1±12.6 nmol/L, P=0.02]. Serum 25(OH)D levels were not found to be related to SLEDAI, elevated anti-dsDNA antibody, low C3 or C4 levels or medications. One vitamin D insufficient patient had low serum albumin-corrected calcium. Serum 25(OH)D levels were found to correlate negatively with estimated glomerular filtration rate (r= –0.30, P=0.03) but was not different between patients who had normal and impaired renal function (P=0.38). The End of "Made in Hong Kong"? : De-industrialisation and Industrial Promotion Policy in Hong Kong
This article explores spatial aspects of Hong Kong's deindustrialisation, related both to the development of closer cross-border ties and to Hong Kong's evolution as a global city. Industrial promotion has always had its place in the generally non-interventionist economic policy ofthe government. However, under the new political and economical conditions industrial promotion has moved up on the agenda. In particular, the promotion of high-tech industries is given special governmental attention. The author wams that the plans for re-industrialising Hong Kong may be based on an obsolete view of the city: the city as an isolated entity rather than as the cross-border economic agglomeration that it is growing into. The aim should be to develop a strong and productive industrial base with intraregional co-operation for the whole agglomeration instead of just for Hong Kong
Chromosomal anomalies and Y-microdeletions among Chinese subfertile men in Hong Kong
Objective: To report the type and frequency of chromosomal anomalies and Y-microdeletions among Hong Kong Chinese subfertile men with sperm concentrations lower than 5 million/mL. Design: Retrospective study. Setting: A reproductive centre in Hong Kong. Participants: A total of 295 Chinese subfertile men who underwent both karyotyping and Y-microdeletion studies from 2000 to 2007 were categorised as having non-obstructive azoospermia (n=71), very severe oligospermia (sperm concentration >0 and ≤2 million/mL, n=158), and severe oligospermia (sperm concentration >2 and <5 million/mL, n=66). Main outcome measures: Karyotyping and Y-microdeletion studies. Results: The prevalence of chromosomal anomalies and Y-microdeletions in the study population were 8.5% (25/295; 95% confidence interval, 5.6-12.3%) and 6.4% (19/295; 3.9-9.9%), respectively. The total prevalence of chromosomal anomalies and Y-microdeletions was 13.2% (39/295; 95% confidence interval, 9.6-17.6%) as five cases of non-obstructive azoospermia showed both Y structural alterations and AZFbc deletion. The corresponding figures for chromosomal anomalies in the groups with non-obstructive azoospermia, very severe oligospermia, and severe oligospermia were 21.1% (15/71; 95% confidence interval, 12.3-32.4%), 5.7% (9/158; 2.6-10.5%), and 1.5% (1/66; 0.0-8.2%). While for Y-microdeletions they were 8.5% (6/71; 3.2-17.5%), 8.2% (13/158; 4.5-13.7%) and 0% (0/66; 0.0-4.4%), respectively. The respective overall prevalence rates for chromosomal anomalies and Y-microdeletions in these groups were: 22.5% (16/71; 13.5-34.0%), 13.9% (22/158; 8.9-20.3%), and 1.5% (1/66; 0.0-8.2%). Conclusions: Our findings strongly support the recommendation for both karyotyping and Y-microdeletion analyses in subfertile men with sperm concentrations of 2 million/mL or lower before they undergo assisted reproduction treatment.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
Terrain Characterisation and Design Wind Profiles for Hong Kong
Numerous wind profiles at different locations in Hong Kong have been obtained from topographical model studies undertaken in the CLP Power Wind/Wave Tunnel Facility (WWTF) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The results of these studies confirm that the impact of adjacent buildings and surrounding topography on the site wind profile is noteworthy and support the addition of more representative wind profiles to the current wind code of Hong Kong, Code of Practice on Wind Effects in Hong Kong 2004 (HK Wind Code 2004), so as to more accurately reflect the site wind characteristics in different regions of Hong Kong. Mean wind speed profile and turbulence intensity profile for three terrain categories, namely deep open sea, harbour-front and built-up, are proposed to be adopted in the wind code of Hong Kong. A case study of wind-induced loads on generic tall buildings with a square cross-section and varying heights demonstrated that the proposed wind profiles provide a more accurate estimation of wind-induced loads on the test buildings compared with those determined based on the wind profiles of open sea terrain specified in HK Wind Code 2004
Some mechanical properties of high-strength concrete in Hong Kong
Information on the mechanical properties of high-strength concrete is needed for the design of structures incorporating high-strength concrete but so far very few such data is available. During the course of various studies on the production of high-strength concrete in Hong Kong, the mechanical properties of high-strength concrete, including: (1) cube compressive strength, (2) cylinder compressive strength, (3) modulus of rupture, (4) split cylinder tensile strength, (5) elastic modulus, (6) Poisson's ratio, and (7) drying shrinkage, have been measured and their inter-relationships analyzed. Test results so obtained are compared to existing results by others to see if the high-strength concrete in Hong Kong is similar to those made elsewhere. These data would help to develop a database of the mechanical properties of high-strength concrete and thus provide a rational basis for modifying existing design methods to apply to high-strength concrete structures.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
Linseed oil-based concrete surface treatment for building and highway structures in Hong Kong
This experimental program investigated the effectiveness of concrete surface treatment using four Canadian linseed oil-based sealants on concrete specimens made from G30/20 and G45/20 concretes, which are typically used for building and highway structures in Hong Kong. The tests were conducted at the University of Hong Kong and the University of Manitoba independently, using samples cast from the same mixes in Hong Kong. A total of more than 500 specimens were tested in each university for salt spray resistance, carbonation, bond strength, dripping and ultra-violet weathering. The results show that the four sealants were capable of penetrating through vertical, upward horizontal and downward horizontal concrete surfaces up to depths of 2.5 mm. All the four sealants significantly enhanced the resistance of G30/20 concrete against salt spray attack and carbonation. The resistance of G45/20 concrete to salt spray was also increased. Up to a duration limit of 500 hours of quick ultra-violet weathering, the treated specimens still demonstrated higher resistance against salt spray attack and carbonation than the untreated ones. However, no conclusion can be made regarding the effect on carbonation resistance of G45/20 concrete, since both the treated and untreated specimens showed no signs of carbonation after the test.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
Risk-adjusted performance, selectivity, timing ability and performance persistence of Hong Kong mutual funds
This paper examines the performance of thirty Hong Kong mutual funds during the period from August 1995 to July 2005. The issues of risk-adjusted performance, selectivity, timing ability and performance persistence are addressed. We employ the signal-factor model, three-factor models and the measurements of Jensen’s alpha and Treynor ratio to evaluate the weekly returns on the sample funds relative to the performance of the Hong Kong market benchmark. Treynor and Mazuy (1966)’s quadratic model is used for assessing selectivity and timing ability of fund managers. Performance persistence of Hong Kong mutual funds is assessed at successive two-year intervals based on their ranking according to both Jensen measure and Treynor measure. Evidence of underperformance of Hong Kong mutual funds relative to the market is found. No significant selectivity and timing ability are shown in the results of the actively managed mutual funds. Persistence is identified for the performance of both winners and losers in the short run
