Educational Practices in Sommerfeld School: A Case of Scientist Education from the View of Nature of Science

    No full text
This study sought to discover what aspects of the nature of science (NOS) should be emphasized to nurture great scientists. To this end, educational practices in the Sommerfeld school, regarded as highly successful in scientist education, were analyzed and compared with past and present educational practices. Sommerfeld school's educational practices include lecture, seminar, colloquium, seminary, and out-of-class education. Common features of the educational practices include (1) open-mindedness based on pleasant relationships, (2) challenging and specific problem-centered learning, (3) intellectual coherence of various topics, and (4) pursuit of shared opinions about problems. Furthermore, explicitly or implicitly, several aspects of NOS-tentativeness, empirical nature, theory-ladenness, creativity, and social dimension-relate to these features. Comparison with other scientist education reveals that the culture of social consensus based on criticism might have contributed significantly to Sommerfeld school's educational success. Study results imply that science professors should work to improve an understanding of social consensus based on criticism.N

The effects of cooperative flipped learning on science achievement and motivation in high school students

    No full text
In this study, we compared the effects of cooperative flipped learning (CFL) on science achievement and learning motivation with those of simple flipped learning (SFL) and traditional lecture (TL) using a mixed-methods design. Three classes containing a total of 65 first-year high school students in South Korea were randomly assigned to the CFL, SFL, and TL conditions and taught the chemistry content of an Integrated Science curriculum in 12 lessons over about 4 weeks. In our research design, we paid particular attention to controlling the overall learning time in both the pre- and in-class contexts of the three groups. Our quantitative analysis confirmed that CFL positively affected motivation, but it negatively affected achievement. SFL showed the opposite results. In qualitative analysis, video watching in FL was rated satisfactorily in most cases, but some students reported that they lacked time. CFL inherited both the pros and cons of cooperative learning with regard to in-class interaction, and the effects of SFL depended on individual students' learning abilities. As a consequence, the balance between pre- and in-class learning should be considered carefully when implementing FL, and lab sessions are suitable candidates for this instructional system.N

Decentralization and recentralization of Korean curriculum documents 2012-2017: a novel approach to text mining in curriculum studies

    No full text
This study adopted a novel text mining (TM) technique in curriculum studies to analyze the multi-layered South Korean curriculum document (CD) system from 2012 to 2017. A total of 716 CDs from the national, regional, and school levels corresponding to 23.4 million Korean characters were examined through keyword frequency analysis, topic modeling with Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), construction of text network with clusters, and document vectorization. The results reveal the decentralized nature of each CD layer; i.e., the regional CD (RCD) mediates the national CD (NCD) to the school CD (SCD), and the SCD plays a key role in the implementation of diverse student-centered learning experiences. However, when the similarity (reversely distance) between the average CD vectors of each layer was examined, the SCD showed a constant trend of recentralization toward NCD. This study suggests that the adoption of TM techniques in curriculum studies would enhance the methodological progress of this field in accordance with conventional CD understanding, revealing novel aspects with reproducible and consistent results from a much larger dataset.N

Improving Science Conceptual Understanding and Attitudes in Elementary Science Classes through the Development and Application of a Rule-Based AI Chatbot

    No full text
This study aimed to develop a specialized rule-based AI chatbot tailored for a sixth-grade optics unit and to evaluate the impact of the implementation of the chatbot on students' cognitive and affective outcomes related to science within the classroom setting. Specifically, this study explored how factors such as gender and achievement levels have an impact on student attitudes. The development of the rule-based chatbot adhered to the network-based instructional systems design framework, which involves the application of the analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate model to the e-learning design and development process. The participants were 192 sixth-grade students, with 81 in the experimental group and 111 in the control group. The results revealed a positive effect on students' science achievement and interest, with a particularly significant impact on those with lower achievement levels. Notably, the chatbot played a crucial role in elevating the interest of female students in science. These findings highlight the need for continued research into the integration of rule-based AI chatbots in science education.Y

Site-directed mutagenesis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa azurin C112D at the M121 position has afforded a series of proteins with elevated Cu-II/I reduction potentials relative to the Cull aquo ion. The high potential and low axial hyperfine splitting (Cu-II electron paramagnetic resonance A(parallel to)) of the C112D/M121L protein are remarkably similar to features normally associated with type 1 copper centers.close353
