    A class of equations with peakon and pulson solutions (with an Appendix by Harry Braden and John Byatt-Smith)

    We consider a family of integro-differential equations depending upon a parameter b as well as a symmetric integral kernel g(x). When b=2 and g is the peakon kernel (i.e. g(x)=exp(?|x|) up to rescaling) the dispersionless Camassa-Holm equation results, while the Degasperis-Procesi equation is obtained from the peakon kernel with b=3. Although these two cases are integrable, generically the corresponding integro-PDE is non-integrable. However,for b=2 the family restricts to the pulson family of Fringer & Holm, which is Hamiltonian and numerically displays elastic scattering of pulses. On the other hand, for arbitrary b it is still possible to construct a nonlocal Hamiltonian structure provided that g is the peakon kernel or one of its degenerations: we present a proof of this fact using an associated functional equation for the skew-symmetric antiderivative of g. The nonlocal bracket reduces to a non-canonical Poisson bracket for the peakon dynamical system, for any value of b?1

    Jennifer Holm was born in California but grew up in Audubon, Pa. As a child, she read constantly and was fascinated by the comic strips in the Sunday paper. She was always interested in writing, and her great aunt’s diary provided the inspiration for her first novel. May Amelia Jackson, her irrepressible and unforgettable heroine, has gone on to become one of the best loved characters in children’s fiction and made a welcome reappearance in 2011’s The Trouble with May Amelia. Our Only May Amelia (1999) became a Newbery Honor winner, and the book’s success allowed Holm to leave her job as a television broadcast producer and focus on writing full-time. She went on to write several more acclaimed books, including a second Newbery Honor winner, Turtle in Paradise (2011). Holm also writes the enormously successful Babymouse graphic novel series and has recently launched the Squish graphic novel series. Both are illustrated by her brother, Matthew Holm. Holm lives with her family in northern California

    Non-integrability of a fifth order equation with integrable two-body dynamics

    We consider the fifth order partial differential equation (PDE) u4x,t?5uxxt+4ut+uu5x+2uxu4x?5uu3x?10uxuxx+12uux=0, which is a generalization of the integrable Camassa-Holm equation. The fifth order PDE has exact solutions in terms of an arbitrary number of superposed pulsons, with geodesic Hamiltonian dynamics that is known to be integrable in the two-body case N=2. Numerical simulations show that the pulsons are stable, dominate the initial value problem and scatter elastically. These characteristics are reminiscent of solitons in integrable systems. However, after demonstrating the non-existence of a suitable Lagrangian or bi-Hamiltonian structure, and obtaining negative results from Painlev\'{e} analysis and the Wahlquist-Estabrook method, we assert that the fifth order PDE is not integrable

    The purpose of this qualitative research study using a life history interview approach was to provide current and future generations of occupational therapists a view of the history and how occupational therapy practice has evolved from its inception to current practice through the life history stories of occupational therapists who have held leadership roles at the national level and beyond. The methodology included one semi-structured interview with Dr. Margo B. Holm, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, ABDA that was conducted by two student researchers. Data was analyzed through coding of the transcribed interview. Three categories with corresponding themes emerged from this process: motivations, education, and the occupational therapy profession. The results of this study found that Dr. Holm has demonstrated that it takes strong dedication as a practitioner, educator, and professional researcher in order to ensure that the occupational therapy profession stays relevant and that evidence-based practice is the key to defining the field of occupational therapy
