    W. M. Holder is the night superintendent at Swift and Company. After 37 years of service, Mr. Holder is retiring on October 1. The 65-year-old plans to enjoy his retirement by spending time at his new country home, near Kennedale, Texas. Mr. Holder is shown in his garden, watering flowers with a hose. He is dressed in a hat, button-up shirt, necktie, suspenders, and trousers. There are trees and a farmhouse in the background.https://mavmatrix.uta.edu/specialcollections_startelegram1940s/10006/thumbnail.jp

Austin's Adoption of ASHRAE S.P. #41 into the Local Energy Code

    No full text
The City of Austin amended the local Energy Code in December 1984 to incorporate the principal recommendations of ASHRAE Standard Project #41. Revisions to the Code were recommended by a special Task Force appointed by the City Council; Task Force members represented major elements of the construction industry and local community. The Code revisions were reviewed and supported by numerous local City boards and commissions after nearly a year's work by the Task Force. Principal changes effecting commercial construction involved deleting OTTV criteria and adding three new criteria: 1. Wall heating criteria 2. Wall cooling criteria 3. Peak cooling criteria The new envelope criteria makes adjustments for building geometry, orientation, shading, insulation, lighting power and controls. A performance index encourages good design by increased awareness of what factors make a difference, The new lighting code methodology is based upon specified watts per square foot for different tasks and gives credit for ceiling height and room size. Cooling equipment efficiencies were increased by 5 to 15%. Pipe and tank insulation Levels were raised and a variety of minor control modifications were added. This paper discusses the code changes related to commercial building envelopes and lighting s-system

Design Tools for Evaluating Alternative Strategies' Impact on Human Comfort

    No full text
Many designers recognize that energy savings can be achieved with alternative or innovative strategies; however, few design tools have been available to assist designers with evaluating alternatives. This paper demonstrates the use of a standard psychrometric chart enhanced with an expanded comfort zone plot based on multiple energy conservation strategies. Average local weather conditions can be plotted by month on the psychrometric chart to indicate which design alternatives have the greatest potential benefits. By utilizing a familiar engineering design tool to communicate integrated design techniques, better coordination can be achieved between architects and engineers. Victor Olgyay pioneered similar work at Notre Dame in the 1950's; however, his unusual graphical presentation has hindered widespread understanding and use of the fundamentals of expanded comfort zones. This paper outlines the basic concept of the expanded comfort zone with applications for use of mean radiant temperatures, direct radiation. air movement and evaporative cooling with examples shown for Dallas and Houston climates

Gender Differentials in Labour Productivity among Small-Holder Cassava Farmers in Ideato Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria.

    No full text
This study examined gender differentials in labour productivity among small-holder cassava farmers in Ideato Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria in 2008. The study data was collected through a multi-stage random sampling technique from 120 cassava farmers, whom consist of 60 males and 60 females. For the male farmers, the coefficients for household size and credit were negatively related to labour productivity and significant at 10.0% level of probability. For the female farmers, the coefficient for farm size was negative, while access to credit was positive; both were significant at 1.0% level of probability. The coefficients for education and age were negative and significant at 5.0% level of probability for all the farmers. The results calls for policies aimed at land re-forms by making more lands and easy accessibility to credit available to women who are younger and more agile for increased labour productivity.Gender, Labour Productivity and Cassava Farmers

    HOLDER STABILITY OF DIFFEOMORPHISMS

We prove that a C(2) diffeomorphism f of a compact manifold M satisfies Axiom A and the strong transversality condition if and only if it is Holder stable, that is, any C(1) diffeomorphism g of M sufficiently C(1) close to f is conjugate to f by a homeomorphism which is Holder on the whole manifold.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000265190500003&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Mathematics, AppliedMathematicsSCI(E)0ARTICLE2315-3292

Chimney holder and injection tube mount for use in atomic absorption and plasma spectroscopy

    No full text
A modified quartz element having plasma and auxiliary gas ports, a upper chimney mount, a unique chimney holder and injection tube mount, and a compression plug is disclosed. The chimney holder and injection tube mount includes a specially machined groove so that a unique, double O-ring seal between the mount and the quartz element may be developed. The injection tube mount also includes a specially designed bore for receiving two O-rings so that the injector tube is supported in and sealed with the mount only through the use of resilient O-rings.U
