    East and south elevation of the Monadnock building depicting the south addition by Holabird and Roche; The seventeen-story building stands 197 feet (60 meters) tall. The northern half was designed and built by Burnham & Root in 1889-1891; the southern half was designed and built by Holabird & Roche in 1891-1893. The building was designated a Chicago Landmark on November 14, 1973 and was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The southern half of the building was built using the more technologically advanced steel frame construction, which allowed narrower piers and wider windows. The radical difference in construction between the two halves marks the building's place in architectural history at the end of one building tradition and the beginning of another.     Ornamental cast-iron work, display windows on State Street, detail of decorative cast-iron work where window spandrels meet; Built in 1899 for the retail firm Schlesinger & Meyer, and expanded and sold to Carson Pirie Scott in 1904.Addition by Burnham in 1905, later addition by Holabird and Root, 1960; both additions follow Sullivan's original plan. "For the remainder of the 1890s Sullivan concentrated on producing a series of brilliant 'skyscraper' designs. Of the nineteen such designs conceived between 1890 and 1901, nine were executed. The Carson Pirie Scott Store (1898-1904) in Chicago is the most minimal, with the broad grid of its steel structure frankly exposed." To this Sullivan added Art Nouveau ornamentation based on plant forms. The Carson Pirie Scott Store was his last large urban structure.     Frontal view showing typical structural bays; Alumni Hall was Mies van der Rohe's first classroom building on the campus. As he did in most of the academic buildings which followed, Mies used a module a bay 24 feet long, 24 feet wide and 12 feet high to allow for flexibility and efficiency in laying out classrooms, labs, and offices. The steel grid of the building's curtain wall suggests the actual steel structure within. City codes mandate that structural steel frames in buildings taller than one story be encased in fireproof material. A large two-story space on the north side, originally intended for use by the Naval ROTC unit, was divided and converted to other uses in 1972.     Detail of southeast corner; Perlstein Hall is the largest building in the Mies Campus Academic Core. It houses many of the university's administrative offices, including the undergraduate admission office, the president's office, and Institutional Advancement; it also houses laboratories and classrooms for Chemical and Environmental Engineering. The landscaping of the walkway west of Perlstein Hall is executed in the manner Mies envisioned for the entire campus. The native trees were selected and placed by Alfred Caldwell, a student and colleague of Mies who landscaped much of IIT's campus.     Range Unit Root (RUR) Tests: Robust against Nonlinearities, Error Distributions, Structural Breaks and Outliers

    Since the seminal paper by Dickey and Fuller in 1979, unit-root tests have conditioned the standard approaches to analysing time series with strong serial dependence in mean behaviour, the focus being placed on the detection of eventual unit roots in an autoregressive model fitted to the series. In this paper, we propose a completely different method to test for the type of long-wave patterns observed not only in unit-root time series but also in series following more complex data-generating mechanisms. To this end, our testing device analyses the unit-root persistence exhibited by the data while imposing very few constraints on the generating mechanism. We call our device the range unit-root (RUR) test since it is constructed from the running ranges of the series from which we derive its limit distribution. These nonparametric statistics endow the test with a number of desirable properties, the invariance to monotonic transformations of the series and the robustness to the presence of important parameter shifts. Moreover, the RUR test outperforms the power of standard unit-root tests on near-unit-root stationary time series; it is invariant with respect to the innovations distribution and asymptotically immune to noise. An extension of the RUR test, called the forward?backward range unit-root (FB-RUR) improves the check in the presence of additive outliers. Finally, we illustrate the performances of both range tests and their discrepancies with the Dickey?Fuller unit-root test on exchange rate series.Publicad
