Broken Hill South was one of the largest of the Broken Hill lead-zinc mines and a major member of the Collins House group of companies. During the nineteen thirties it diversified into various other mining activities including a wide scale programme of mineral exploration. The mine itself closed in 1972 with the bulk of its operations being taken over by CRA, North Broken Hill and WMC.

Includes family history of the Rigby and Hill families. Edna Hill was a kindergarten teacher and lifelong advocate for early childhood education. She was involved with the Creche and Kindergarten Association of Queensland and the Queensland Spastic Children's Welfare League. Her sister Dorothy was professor of Geology at the University of Queensland
