Photograph of the Yoshinaga family sitting on a couch. From left to right: Amy Yoshinaga, John Yoshinaga, Frank Yoshinaga, Sanji Yoshinaga, Shigeru Yoshinaga, Aiko Herzig Yoshinaga, and Ei Yoshinaga Suzuki. Three others are pictured in the photograph. A photo from: John Yoshinaga's photo album (csudh_aiko_0381).Aiko Herzig Yoshinaga Papers includes photographs and a letter related to Aiko's life, family, and work. Aiko Herzig Yoshinaga was an activist for the Japanese American Redress movement whose research conducted for the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians (CWRIC) provided key evidence that led to redress. She later co-edited the transcription and publication of the CWRIC hearings, along with other related projects. This collection mostly includes photographs from her early life primarily focused on the years 1930-1950. Subjects in the photographs include the Jerome and Rower incarceration camps, post- World War II Japan, Japanese American soldiers, and Japanese American families

Let F/F+F/F^+ be a CM number field and wpw|p a place of FF lying over a place of F+F^+ that splits in FF. If \rbar:G_F\rightarrow \GL_n(\Fpbar) is a global Galois representation automorphic with respect to a definite unitary group over F+F^+ then there is a naturally associated \GL_n(F_w)-representation H^0(\rbar) over \Fpbar constructed using mod pp automorphic forms, and it is hoped that H^0(\rbar) will correspond to \rGFw under a conjectural mod pp local Langlands correspondence. The goal of the thesis is to study how to recover the data of \rGFw from H0(rˉ)H^0(\bar{r}) in certain cases. Assume that FwF_w is unramified and n=3n=3. Under certain technical hypotheses on rˉ\bar{r}, we give an explicit recipe to find all the data of \rGFw inside the \GL_3(F_w)-action on H^0(\rbar) when \rGFw is maximally nonsplit, Fontaine-Laffaille, generic, and has a unique Serre weight. This generalizes work of Herzig, Le and Morra who found analogous results when F_w=\Qp as well as work of Breuil and Diamond in the case of unramified \GL_2.Ph.D

Let F/F+ be a CM number field and w|p a place of F lying over a place of F+ that splits in F. If r¯:GF → GLn( F¯p) is a global Galois representation automorphic with respect to a definite unitary group over F + then there is a naturally associated GLn( Fw)-representation H0( r¯) over F¯p constructed using mod p automorphic forms, and it is hoped that H0(r¯) will correspond to r¯|GFw under a conjectural mod p local Langlands correspondence. The goal of the thesis is to study how to recover the data of r¯|GFw from H0(r¯) in certain cases. Assume that Fw is unramified and n=3. Thermoluminescence dating of a mikveh in Ichenhausen, Germany

A vaulted basement found at the rabbi's residential house which was oriented according to the requirements of a mikveh has created a controversy in the architectural history of the Ichenhausen Synagogue (Germany). The rabbi's residential house is known to have been built in 1781 during the replacement of the old Synagogue that had existed since 1687. However, the architectural documents concerning the residential house did not contain any information about either the presence or the construction of the mikveh in the basement. Three bricks collected from the northern, eastern and southern walls of the vaulted basement of the rabbi's residence were dated using the thermoluminescence method to find out if the mikveh belongs to the old Synagogue or was built during the construction of the residence. The archaeological dose was assessed using multi-aliquot regenerative and additive dose techniques using quartz extracted from bricks. The age calculations were based on the assessment of annual dose rate in quartz by taking into account the possible variations of water content in bricks. The TL dates of the bricks were found to vary between 1797 +/- 11 and 1772 +/- 16 for dry and water saturated environments, respectively. The TL results ruled out the possibility that the walls of the mikveh belong to the former Synagogue

A concise and efficient synthesis of seco-duocarmycin SA

A short and efficient synthesis of seco-duocarmycin SA (3), a highly potent cytostatic agent and direct precursor of the natural product duocarmycin SA (1), has been achieved. Starting from commercially available 2-methoxy-4-nitroaniline (4) the synthetic protocol contains a Fischer indole synthesis to introduce the heterocyclic scaffold and a radical 5-exo-trig cyclization to furnish the (chloromethyl)indoline ring system as key reactions. Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
