Purple Code – With Clara Herrmann
After a long summer break, we are back with a new exiting guest: Clara Herrmann. Since 2019, Clara has headed the JUNGE AKADEMIE, the international artist-in-residence program of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin. For JUNGE AKADEMIE she developed the program HUMAN MACHINE and initiated and curated the project AI ANARCHIES with a fellowship program and an autumn school co-curated by Nora N. Khan and Maya Indira Ganesh and a final exhibition and event in 2024: The Anarchy of the Soul. Clara was co-founder and coordinator of the Digital Solitude program at Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart, where she developed and curated the project Web Residencies. In this episode, Clara guides us through her work as a curator, the specific challenges of her projects and the undertakings to open up art while leaving it with complete autonomy in times of great politicization

Preface. World's new princedoms: critical remarks on claimed alternatives by new life
[Extract] The way we view the world, envisage possibilities for social change and strive for improvement in the quality of life is highly complex, with significant challenges in rapidly changing landscapes of the 21st century.
This book, edited by Herrmann and with contributions from Earles and Kratzwald, revisits, with fresh insight, key sociological, philosophical, political and cultural theoretical frameworks of relevance to contemporary globalised world. The book is thought-provoking in its central thesis which posits that there is a tendency for the 'refeudalisation' of production and reproduction and where economics is enmeshed with all elements of social life. Herrmann takes us on a journey of revisiting the concept of citizenship, that all important, and yet unclear concept We are confronted with how citizenship is redefined in the face of modern globalised capitalism where the state is an instrument of global economics. The author visits key questions of rights, inclusion-exclusion within bounded territoriality and spatial boundaries in the context of globalisation where borders are porous. The notion of citizenship calls into question its inextricable links to the nation-state. Herrmann challenges us to think through the complexity of this relationship including the technocratic nature of contemporary nation-states, what is the 'common good' and the relevance of collective rights. He also presents a critique of the nation state across the different historical stages of society (from slave society to global capitalist) and how the different stages of the nation state are characterised (i) on power, (ii) territoriality and (iii) on how it is related to economic structures and class division/division of labour

The construction of Karen Karnak: The multi-author-function
This thesis is situated within the comparatively recent developments of Web 2.0 and the emergence of interactive WikiMedia, and explores the mode of authorship within a Read/Write culture compared to that of a Read/Only tradition. The hypothesis of this study is that the role of the audience has become merged with the author, and as such, represents new functions and attributes, distinct from a more conventional concept of authorship, in which the roles of audience and author are more separate. Read/Write and participatory culture, as defined by this study, is focused on collaboration, and includes the influences of D.I.Y. culture, Open-Source practices and the production of text by multiple authors. Multi-authorship presents a re-thinking of several concepts which support the notion of the individual author, since the focus of multi-authorship is not on attribution and ownership of a finished text, but on the continued malleability of a text. Modes of multi-authorship, demonstrated in the use of the pseudonyms Alan Smithee and Karen Eliot, represent declarative authors whose names signify multiple origins, whilst concurrently indicating a distinct body of work. The function of these names form an important context to this study, since primary research involves the construction of an experimental mode of multi-authorship utilising WikiMedia technology and the interaction of thirty nine participants, who are invited to create a body of work under the collective pseudonym Karen Karnak. The data generated by this experiment is analysed using aspects of Michel Foucault's author-function to identify and determine power structures inherent in the WikiMedia context. The interplay of power structures, including concepts such as identity, ownership and the body of work, affect the resulting mode of authorship and contribute to the construction of Karen Karnak, suggesting further areas of research into the emerging multi-author

Culture and Cooperation
Does the cultural background influence the success with which genetically unrelated individuals cooperate in social dilemma situations? In this paper we provide an answer by analyzing the data of Herrmann et al. (Science 2008, pp. 1362-1367), who study cooperation and punishment in sixteen subject pools from six different world cultures (as classified by Inglehart & Baker (American Sociological Review 2000, pp. 19-51)). We use analysis of variance to disentangle the importance of cultural background relative to individual heterogeneity and group-level differences in cooperation. We find that culture has a substantial influence on the extent of cooperation, in addition to individual heterogeneity and group-level differences identified by previous research. The significance of this result is that cultural background has a substantial influence on cooperation in otherwise identical environments. This is particularly true in the presence of punishment opportunities.human cooperation, punishment, culture, experimental public good games
