Archaeology and the politics of pedagogy

    No full text
It is argued here that pedagogy, rather than being a passive process of delivery, is part of the field of cultural politics, a contested domain, a public sphere where knowledges, views and perceptions on the past and the present are debated and contested, or valorized, reproduced and legitimized. Recent archaeological theory has neglected the field of pedagogy, which, as a result, has been largely colonized by the instrumentalist discourse, in its new, market-oriented reincarnation. This dominant view of archaeological pedagogy is presented in objectified, neutral terms as the natural, inevitable course of affairs: it has become the 'doxic' regime that is presented as being beyond criticism at its core, save for peripheral managerial points. Archaeology, however, has the ability to undermine this objectified discourse by showing the contingency, historicity, and the inevitably transient and unstable nature of the present-day pedagogical regime in archaeology. Current instrumentalist pedagogy, despite its dominance, does not go unchallenged. One way of challenging it is by devising pedagogical processes that create a space for critical reflection, reconnect subjectivity and experience with knowledge, and allow students not only to understand the material and social processes that generate and reproduce their own subjectivity, but also question and even transform these processes and conditions. Student-centred journals that promote critical reflexivity are an example of one such pedagogic process. This paper presents the experience of the author in using such a device in the teaching of a course on the archaeology and anthropology of eating and drinking

The review of the book Populist Discourse – Recasting Populism Research, written by Yannis Stavrakakis and launched during the Spring of 2024, provides a comprehensive overview of the arguments raised by the author regarding the recent discussion about populism. Among many qualifications, the book facilitates the debate about populism made by Laclau in On Populist Reason. It shows how it can be applied to research on and about populism to help us have a more rigorous and comprehensive approach to political contexts around the Globe. Stavrakakis continue the critical tradition developed by Laclau and Mouffe, deepening our understanding of populism's discursive dimensions in contemporary politics. In my review, I summarize the book, highlight the positive and negative points of Stavrakakis’ approach, and finalise with a guide to help the reader get the best from the book

A scalable framework for stylometric analysis of multi-author documents

This is an accepted manuscript of a chapter published by Springer in Database Systems for Advanced Applications. DASFAA 2018. Lecture Notes in Computer Science, vol 10827 on 13/05/2018, available online: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-91452-7_52 The accepted version of the publication may differ from the final published version.Stylometry is a statistical technique used to analyze the variations in the author’s writing styles and is typically applied to authorship attribution problems. In this investigation, we apply stylometry to authorship identification of multi-author documents (AIMD) task. We propose an AIMD technique called Co-Authorship Graph (CAG) which can be used to collaboratively attribute different portions of documents to different authors belonging to the same community. Based on CAG, we propose a novel AIMD solution which (i) significantly outperforms the existing state-of-the-art solution; (ii) can effectively handle a larger number of co-authors; and (iii) is capable of handling the case when some of the listed co-authors have not contributed to the document as a writer. We conducted an extensive experimental study to compare the proposed solution and the best existing AIMD method using real and synthetic datasets. We show that the proposed solution significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art method

Transmission en activité de dessin et de peinture à l'école maternelle

Transmission in drawing and painting activities in nursery school. - The author observes that child's activity is much more valued and exploited by the teacher for symbolic learning objectives if its instrumental aspect allows a better identification of the cognitive nature of the task required from him, and a better adaptation of the institutional objectives assigned to these activities by reducing its « creative » elaboration. Papamichael Yannis. Towards language-parametric semantic editor services based on declarative type system specifications

    No full text
Editor services assist programmers to more effectively write and comprehend code. Implementing editor services correctly is not trivial. This paper focuses on the specification of semantic editor services, those that use the semantic model of a program. The specification of refactorings is a common subject of study, but many other semantic editor services have received little attention. We propose a language-parametric approach to the definition of semantic editor services, using a declarative specification of the static semantics of the programming language, and constraint solving. Editor services are specified as constraint problems, and language specifications are used to ensure correctness. We describe our approach for the following semantic editor services: reference resolution, find usages, goto subclasses, code completion, and the extract definition refactoring. We do this in the context of Statix, a constraint language for the specification of type systems. We investigate the specification of editor services in terms of Statix constraints, and the requirements these impose on a suitable solver.Programming Language

Search for the axion dark matter in the mass range of 6.62–6.82 μeV

    No full text
The axion is a hypothetical particle associated with the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the U(1) symmetry, proposed by Pecci and Quinn to resolve the Charge-Parity (CP) problem in quantum chromodynamics. For invisible axions, cosmological and astrophysical observations impose the lower and upper limits on axion mass of µeV and meV respectively. The axion in such a mass range could be a promising candidate for the cold dark matter. The CAPP-8TB experiment searches for the axion by detecting photons, produced by the axion-photon coupling, resonating in a microwave cavity. The experiment has recently obtained a result of axion search in the mass range of 6.62-6.82 µeV. At the 90 % confidence level we probed the QCD axion down to a theoretical boundary, which is the most sensitive experimental result in the specific mass range to date. In this paper we will explain the detail of the experimental setup, parameters and analysis procedure. A plan for the next phase of the experiment for different mass ranges will also be discussed. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0)
