Protest Against Oppression Reflected In Sandra Brown’s Rainwater Novel (2009): A Sociological Approach

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to analyze the oppression issue in Rainwater novel (2009) created by Sandra Brown. The oppression issue in this novel used sociological approach to be analyzed. Novel itself is the primary data sources of this study and the secondary data source taken from internet such articles, journals, books and many other sources related with it. The result of this study showed the following conclusion. Firstly, there are third types of oppression as likes exploitation, marginalization, and violence. Secondly, the researcher illustrated the oppression by using the character and characterization, setting, event, diction, and symbol. Thirdly, the reason why the author shows oppression issue in this novel is to give the message that oppression must go away from every region

Vascular toxicities with VEGF inhibitor therapies-focus on hypertension and arterial thrombotic events

    No full text
The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signaling pathway (VSP) fulfills a cardinal role in endothelial cells and its inhibition has profound cardiovascular impact. This is true not only for the normal vasculature but also for the tumor vasculature when VSP inhibitors are used as anti-angiogenic therapies. Generalized endothelial dysfunction predisposes to vasoconstriction, atherosclerosis, platelet activation, and thrombosis (arterial more than venous). All of these have been reported with VSP inhibitors and collectively give rise to vascular toxicities, the most concerning of which are arterial thromboembolic events (ATE). VSP inhibitors include antibodies, acting extracelluarly on VEGF, such as bevacizumab and tyrosine kinases inhibitors, acting intracellularly on the kinase domain of VEGF receptors, such as sunintib and sorafenib. The addition of bevacizumab and VSP tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy to the cancer treatment regimen is associated with a 1.5–2.5-fold and 2.3–4.6-fold increase risk of ATEs, respectively. Risk factors for ATEs while on VSP inhibitor therapy include age older than 65 years, previous thromboembolic events, history of atherosclerotic disease, and duration of VSP inhibitor therapy. In clinical practice, hypertension remains the most commonly noted vascular manifestation of VSP inhibition. Optimal blood pressure goals and preferred therapeutic strategies toward reaching these goals are not defined at present. This review summarizes current data on this topic and proposes a more intensive management approach to patients undergoing VSP inhibitor therapy including Systolic Blood PRessure Intervention Trial (SPRINT) blood pressure goals, pleiotropic vasoprotective agents such as angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, amlodipine, and carvedilol, high-dose statin therapy, and aspirin

Margins of international banking: is there a productivity pecking order in banking, too?

    No full text
Modern trade theory emphasizes firm-level productivity differentials to explain the cross-border activities of non-financial firms. This study tests whether a productivity pecking order also determines international banking activities. Using a novel dataset that contains all German banks' international activities, we estimate the ordered probability of a presence abroad (extensive margin) and the volume of international assets (intensive margin). Methodologically, we enrich the conventional Heckman selection model to account for the self-selection of banks into different modes of foreign activities using an ordered probit. Four main findings emerge. First, similar to results for non-financial firms, a productivity pecking order drives bank internationalization. Second, only a few non-financial firms engage in international trade, but many banks hold nternational assets, and only a few large banks engage in foreign direct investment. Third, in addition to productivity, risk factors matter for international banking. Fourth, gravity-type variables have an important impact on international banking activities. --International banking, extensive and intensive margin, productivity pecking order, ordered probit, selection models

Impact of inferred latent heating rates on predictions of convective storms

November 8, 1991.Also issued as author's thesis (M.S.) -- Colorado State University, 1991.A localized ordinary thunderstorm system occurred during the Convective Initiation and Downburst Experiment (CINDE) , in the Denver, Colorado area on 29-30 July 1987. The three-dimensional, nonhydrostatic version of the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) , developed at Colorado State University, was utilized in this case to investigate the impact of forced latent heating rates on short-range (12 hours or less) quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPFs). This was accomplished by using estimated convective precipitation rates , in a modified Kuo-type convective parameterization scheme, to determine the vertical-distribution of latent-heating rates. The inferred heating rates were then used, instead of the model predicted heating rates, to guide the model to a more desirable state. The sensitivity of the model to a variety of precipitation rates and the impact of the duration of simulation time are also examined. The 12 hour simulation with no forced heating failed to predict any precipitation in the northeast Colorado region. On the other hand, while the 24 hour simulation with no forced heating did predict precipitation in the northeast area of interest, the precipitation was positioned too far north of the observed precipitation area and the intensity was too small. In general, 12 hour simulations that used forced heating rates, for a one hour period during the simulation, produced the most improved precipitation forecasts. However, the results were extremely sensitive to the various precipitation rates used to obtain the forced heating rates, with weaker values having no impact at all and the strongest rates producing the most improved forecast.Sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration NGT-70153

Teenage mothers' support group : building skills among young mothers in preparation for socioeconomic progression

    No full text
This project involved the creation and maintenance of a support group for teen mothers in Sullivan County, New Hampshire. It emphasized the complex problems that teenage mothers must overcome even before they can complete their primary education and participate in such economic opportunities as employment and acquiring a home. Such mothers often face, for example, problems of poverty, low self-esteem and lack of confidence, isolation and depression, social stigma and lack of social support. It has been proven that the provision of support can ease the transition of these mothers into a better quality of life. The project's main objective was to use the mechanism of a support group to bring resources to a number of disadvantaged teen mothers so that they could develop the confidence, information, services, and social networks they need to gain stability and advance economically. The support group that was formed is still operating, is having some good success despite complications, and seems to offer a very promising way to help large numbers of teen mothers become ready to take advantage of educational opportunities and ultimately good employment opportunities.
