No full textWenn pauschal vom Privaten in den Medien gesprochen wird, geht leicht verloren, wie komplex der Begriff Privatheit eigentlich ist. Der Beitrag unterscheidet drei Kategorien des Privaten in den Boulevardmedien am Beispiel von „Bild“: Erstens die voyeuristische Berichterstattung, die unzulässig in die Privatsphäre der Akteure eindringt. Die Berichte der zweiten Kategorie stellen gesellschaftspolitisch relevante Themen dar. Sie erfüllen klassische journalistische Funktionen, thematisieren häufig aber auch persönliche Erfahrungen und Gefühle der jeweiligen Akteure. Damit stehen sie im Widerspruch zu einem Gesellschaftsmodell, das Öffentlichkeit und Privatheit dichotomisch versteht. Die dritte Kategorie der Beiträge ist noch kaum untersucht. Sie schildern alltägliche Begebenheiten und skandalisieren dabei kaum. Analysen zeigen, dass in diesen Beiträgen sehr häufig Gefühle der Scham verhandelt werden. Viele der Beiträge stellen die Akteure in beschämenden Situationen dar, ohne ein Identifikationsangebot zu machen. Möglicherweise dient das der Delegation von Schamgefühlen der Rezipienten. Aus medienethischer Perspektive ist eine solche öffentliche Beschämung abzulehnen. EnglishFriederike Herrmann: What we are Ashamed of. Theses Regarding the Functions of Privacy in the Tabloid Press When speaking generally of privacy in the media, one tends to ignore how complex the concept of privacy actually is. The essay differentiates between three categories of privacy in the yellow press, using the example of the German newspaper “Bild”. The first one is unauthorized voyeuristic coverage that violates people’s privacy. This should be ethically disapproved of, as paragraph 8 of the German codex for the press quite clearly states. Articles of the second category are more controversial. They deal with subjects that are relevant in terms of social policy, still using details from the personal lives of the people concerned such as their private experiences and the feelings involved. These articles perform the traditional journalistic function of self-reflection and introspection in society or they have the purpose to advise and inform. This function can hardly be understood with a dichotomous model of society that splits public and private life into opposites. The third category of articles has not yet been examined properly. They deal with everyday events, which they hardly ever turn into scandals. And yet analyses have revealed that these articles often display feelings of shame and inferiority, showing the people concerned in embarrassing situations without suggesting identification. Possibly this helps the recipients to delegate shameful feelings of their own. From an ethical point of view such public humiliation should be firmly rejected.
Das Märchen vom überkochenden Brei. Narrative in der medialen Berichterstattung zum Flüchtlingsthema im Herbst 2015
No full textNarrative sind Darstellungsmuster, die Sinn und Bedeutung erzeugen und gleichzeitig unserem Wahrnehmen und Verstehen eine bestimmte Form geben und es damit auch begrenzen. Gesellschaftliche Diskurse werden oft wesentlich von explizit oder implizit enthaltenen Narrativen geformt. Der Beitrag untersucht eine Kommunikationssituation der Berichterstattung über Flüchtlinge im Herbst 2015 und zeigt, wie diese Gefühle von Überforderung und Ohnmacht evozierte. In dieser Situation entstand ein Narrativ, das vereinfachend der deutschen Bundeskanzlerin die Verantwortung für die Krise zuschrieb und damit auch die Macht, diese Probleme zu lösen. Die globalen Zusammenhänge des Themas wurden in diesem Narrativ marginalisiert, gegenläufige Entwicklungen und Ursachen des Geschehens kaum thematisiert. Die Perspektive der Flüchtlinge ging verloren, sie erschienen nur mehr als technisches Problem, gleich einer Flut, die es einzudämmen gilt. Aus medienethischer aber auch aus professioneller Perspektive wäre es wünschenswert, dass Journalistinnen und Journalisten solche Narrative erkennen und dekonstruieren können. Narratives in the Media Coverage of Refugee Issues during Autumn 2015 Narratives are patterns of representation that produce sense and meaning and at the same time shape our perception and understanding, thereby setting a limit to them. Social discourse is often considerably influenced by explicit or implicit narratives. The article examines a situation in the coverage of refugees in autumn 2015 and shows how it evoked the feeling of being overwhelmed and powerless. This situation produced a narrative that attributed, in a simplified manner, the responsibility for the crisis and consequently also the power to solve the problems to the German Chancellor. The global perspective of this issue was marginalized in the narrative, opposite developments and causes for the events were hardly mentioned. In this kind of selfcentered outlook the human fate of the refugees disappeared from the narrative and it became possible to regard them as just another technical problem, like flooding that needs to be controlled. From a media ethical and also a professional point of view, it would be very desirable for journalists to be able to identify and deconstruct such narratives.
