THE CHALLENGES AND PERCEPTIONS OF COMMUNITY CAREGIVERS WITH REGARD TO ANTIRETROVIRAL TREATMENT ADHERENCE OF PATIENTS: A PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY
Although there is no cure for HIV and AIDS, antiretroviral treatment has transformed this disease into a manageable chronic illness. Relatively little is known about the experiences and psychosocial challenges that community caregivers of HIV and AIDS home community-based care programmes experience in ensuring patent adherence to antiretroviral treatment (ART). This article describes the results of a phenomenological study to explore these perceptions of community caregivers. Focus group discussions were facilitated with community caregivers and they made narrative reflections in journals to gain insight into their everyday world and experiences of dealing with the challenges of patients on antiretroviral treatment, as well as noting their suggestions for interventions to ensure adherence to antiretroviral treatment
An Empowerment Narrative Leadership Program for a Disadvantaged Community
Purpose: This research is providing social workers with a deeper insight into the process of empowering people from disadvantaged communities with leadership abilities by applying a narrative approach in group work and to develop members’ individual potential within their social construction of leaders and leadership. Method: This research was undertaken following the developmental and utilization model of Grinnell with a combined qualitative and quantitative research approach. The research was performed from a postmodern and social constructivist paradigm and therefore relied more on the qualitative research perspective. Results: The research includes guidelines for a group work narrative leadership program. The impact of the social constructionist approach on the group members re-authors their narratives. Conclusions: Group work by means of the narrative approach in social work is recommended because it has become evident from this study that a richer description of the lives of people can be gained. </jats:sec
AN EVALUATION OF THE COMMUNITY-BASED CARE AND SUPPORT SERVICES FOR OLDER PERSONS IN A SPECIFIC COMMUNITY
Community-based care and support services for older persons aim at enhancing their quality of life and keeping them in their communities for as long as possible. The aim of this study was to evaluate these services in a specific community, namely the Motheo District, Free State Province. The views of three groups of participants were obtained, namely management committee members from organisations for older persons, older persons benefiting from these services, and social workers involved in these services. Findings from the three groups of participants were triangulated throughout the study and some recommendations were made for enhancing these services
INTERVENTION STRATEGIES USED TO ADDRESS ALCOHOL ABUSE IN THE NORTH WEST PROVINCE, SOUTH AFRICA
One of the purposes of the Alcohol Sub-Study of the Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiological (PURE) study was to identify the socio-economic effects of binge drinking from the perspective of community support networks and assess their intervention efforts to address the alcohol abuse problem in the selected areas of study. Emphasis was placed on implementation of plans and legislation; however, eradication of the problem seems to be insignificant for various reasons. This article reports on these identified challenges and proposes appropriate intervention strategies that take cognisance of the nature of the communities for which intervention efforts are intende
A psycho-social therapeutic group work programme preventing the onset of post-traumatic stress disorder among police officials attached to the specialised units in the South African Police Service

The themes of the programme are schematically presented, after which it is discussed in detail according to the subject, aim and content
THE PSYCHOSOCIAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE CLOSING OF A MINE FOR WORKERS AND THEIR FAMILIES
This article arose from a project which was launched on behalf of the Labour Union Solidarity after the interim liquidation and immediate closing of the Durban Roodepoort Deep (DRD) Gold Mine at Stilfontein. This mining community was also traumatized by an earthquake shortly before the closing of the mine. The process commenced on 27 April 2005, when a contract was drawn up with Solidarity’s Helping Hand Fund to do a psychosocial situation analysis among the community. Based on the results of the psychosocial situation analysis, a project plan was submitted to Solidarity, after which a formal agreement was reached between the two parties and a meeting with the representatives of the labour union was held. Following this, the plan of action was proposed, the facilitators trained and the programme implemented. The data of thepsychosocial situation analysis, the contents and course of the group sessions as well as the results that ensued from the questionnaire that was filled in by the women during the women’s day as well as certain strengths present in the community are discussed. This is followed by an integrated discussion of the investigation. A number of recommendations are also made for the future
KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDES AND BELIEFS OF OLDER MEN REGARDING HIV AND AIDS IN SOUTH AFRICA
This article reports on a study done with older men who are affected in many ways by HIV and Aids. An exploratory design was used for the study, with in-depth interviewing to gain a rich combination of qualitative and quantitative data. Besides providing certain demographic information, participants were interviewed on the impact of general illness in their community, and the impact of HIV and Aids specifically on the individual, the household and the community
Exploring programmes to support police officials exposed to trauma
As a result of the critical nature of police officers' work, it is of utmost importance that they have direct access to support. The efficacy of the present trauma intervention programmes in the South African Police Service (SAPS) is questioned, because despite the implementation of trauma intervention programmes, police officials still present high levels of acute and behavioural problems. A literature overview of proposed international trauma intervention approaches concentrating on both the psychological, behavioural and social factors affecting police officers exposed to trauma, as well as those models implemented by SAPS are discussed. The objective of this article is to critically appraise existing trauma intervention approaches to better understand, compare and extrapolate key elements of these approaches, and to reconfigure them into a comprehensive holistic psychosocial therapeutic trauma intervention programme for use among the police in South Africa. It was found that the cognitive behavioural therapy model (CBT), prolonged exposure (PE) and the eco-systemic perspective, which was specifically developed for social work, dispose some of the best elements to be reconfigured into a holistic psycho-social trauma intervention programme
