Incidence of Influenza Among Childhood Cancer Survivors in South Korea: A Population-based Retrospective Analysis

    No full text
BACKGROUND/AIM: We quantified the incidence, and identified risk factors for influenza infection among childhood cancer survivors in South Korea, an at-risk population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nationwide health insurance claims data were used to assess the frequency of influenza among childhood cancer survivors (aged <20 years) diagnosed between January 2009 and April 2016. A multivariable logistic regression was constructed to identify risk factors for influenza. RESULTS: Of 6,457 children cancer survivors, 1,704 (27.0%) were diagnosed with influenza. Influenza was common in children <5 years old and infections were highest between late October and April. Over 60% of influenza treatment claims came from private clinics. Risk factors for influenza included age <9 years. CONCLUSION: Childhood cancer survivors are particularly at-risk for influenza infection during the traditional influenza season. Identifying risks for influenza infection will help to establish countermeasures for reducing the influenza infections in at-risk cancer surviving children

– Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Human-Centered DesignDesign Aesthetic

Optical properties of PbSe quantum dots doped in borosilicate glass

    No full text
PbSe quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized in borosilicate glass and their optical properties were investigated. The typical quantum confinement effects were clearly observed from the absorption when the average radii of the QDs changed from 1.7 to 3.1 nm. Photoluminescence from PbSe QDs was achieved in 1.1-2.2 mu m wavelength region that covers the entire fiber-optic telecommunication window. Borosilicate glasses containing controlled size of PbSe QDs provide potentials for the fiber-optic amplifiers. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.X111926sciescopu

STIM is a Ca2+ sensor essential for Ca2+-store-depletion-triggered Ca2+ influx

Ca2+ signaling in nonexcitable cells is typically initiated by receptor-triggered production of inositol-1,4,5-tris-phosphate and the release of Ca2+ from intracellular stores [1]. An elusive signaling process senses the Ca2+ store depletion and triggers the opening of plasma membrane Ca2+ channels [2-5]. The resulting sustained Ca2+ signals are required for many physiological responses, such as T cell activation and differentiation [6]. Here, we monitored receptor-triggered Ca2+ signals in cells transfected with siRNAs against 2,304 human signaling proteins, and we identified two proteins required for Ca2+-store-depletion-mediated Ca2+ influx, STIM1 and STIM2 [7-9]. These proteins have a single transmembrane region with a putative Ca2+ binding domain in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum. Ca2+ store depletion led to a rapid translocation of STIM1 into puncta that accumulated near the plasma membrane. Introducing a point mutation in the STIM1 Ca2+ binding domain resulted in prelocalization of the protein in puncta, and this mutant failed to respond to store depletion. Our study suggests that STIM proteins function as Ca2+ store sensors in the signaling pathway connecting Ca2+ store depletion to Ca2+ influx

Prevalence of Endocrine Disorders in Childhood Brain Tumor Survivors in South Korea

    No full text
BACKGROUND/AIM: This longitudinal study aimed to analyze the prevalence of endocrine disorders in childhood brain tumor survivors in South Korea using claims data. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We identified in 1,058 patients from a nationwide cohort of patients diagnosed with brain tumors between January 1st 2009 to March 29th 2016. Multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate associations between clinical factors and endocrine disorders. RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 60.0 months, 393 (37.1%) patients had at least 1 endocrine disorder. The commonest endocrine disorders were hypopituitarism (17.4%) and hypothyroidism (6.1%). Female gender (odds ratio(OR)=1.45, p=0.005) and age <10 years (OR=1.65, p=0.001) conferred a higher risk. Patients who received radiotherapy were more likely to have endocrine disorders compared to those who did not (OR=1.79, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Regular assessment of endocrine function and timely interventions are necessary for childhood brain tumor survivors with a risk of endocrine disorders

Roles of Molybdenum and Tungsten on Reheat Cracking Susceptibility of 2.25Cr Heat Resistant Steels

The rupture time of the tungsten-alloyed steel is much shorter than that of the molybdenum-alloyed steel. The fracture mode of the former steel is typically intergranular, but the latter steel shows a mixed fracture mode of intergranular and ductile. The shorter rupture time of the tungsten-alloyed steel is due to the active carbide formation reaction of tungsten in ferrite which depletes carbon within the matrix; the resulting higher segregation concentration of phosphorus at GCls and carbide-free PAGBs. The longer rupture time of the other steel arises from two factors: the molybdenum segregated at the interfaces as a grain boundary strengthener; the repulsive segregation between carbon and phosphorus which repels phosphorus from the interfaces and produces the lower segregation concentration of phosphorus.110Ysciescopu
