Illustrated print of the public square in Troy, Miami County, Ohio, ca. 1886-1888. The scene shows a horse and buggy, clothier, dentist, and gazebo with a clock tower in the distance. It was drawn from a photograph that is part of a collection compiled by Henry Howe while researching the 1889 edition of his book "Historical Collections of Ohio.

Western Reserve College illustration
Sketch done by Henry Howe of Western Reserve College located in Hudson, Ohio. It opened in 1826 and became an important center for anti-slavery sentiment in Ohio. Western Reserve College was closely affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. The school fell on hard times, and thanks to a generous donation by Amasa Stone in 1892 it was relocated to Cleveland. Union Furnace in Lawrence County
A sketch of Union Furnace in Lawrence County, done by Henry Howe in 1847. Lawrence County is part of an area known as "Hanging Rock Iron Region," which includes parts of Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. The area was known for its abundance of high quality ores and minerals. Former slave owner and eventual abolitionist John Means built the first iron blast furnace north of the Ohio River during the early 1820s. The Cincinnati Zoological Gardens, which opened in 1875, is one of the oldest zoos in the United States. The zoo was originally established on just over sixty-six acres in Blakely Woods.
