Use of subarrays in linear array for improving wide angular scanning performance
The scanning performance of wide-angular scanning linear arrays is primarily degraded by the limited angular profile of the employed elements' patterns. This paper introduces an innovative strategy for compensating this degradation by using subarrays. Our design uses a uniform linear array with half-wavelength spaced elements, supplemented by subarrays that are symmetrically placed at its edges. The employed subarrays have controlled patterns, favoring some directions for effective scan-loss compensation (SLC) and suppressing other directions for lowering the sidelobes level (SLL). Two types of feeding configurations, making use of fixed power dividers in combination with 1-bit phase switch, are used for producing the desired patterns. The complete array design and physical validation, starting from the elements, continuing with the subarrays and ending with the system integration are also discussed in detail. The integration of the subarrays yields notable performance improvements at large scanning angles when compared with uniform linear arrays. The peak and first SLL of -14.1 dB, and the SLC of 2 dB are obtained when the array with CUP antennas as elements is scanned to the maximum scan angle direction.International Research Centre for Telecommunication and RadarElectrical Engineering Educatio
Multi-Objective Cross-Layer Optimization for Selection of Cooperative Path Pairs in Multihop Wireless Ad hoc Networks
This paper focuses in the selection of an optimal path pair for cooperative diversity based on cross-layer optimization in multihop wireless ad hoc networks. Cross-layer performance indicators, including power consumption, signal-to-noise ratio, and load variance are optimized using multi-objective optimization (MOO) with Pareto method. Consequently, optimization can be performed simultaneously to obtain a compromise among three resources over all possible path pairs. The Pareto method is further compared to the scalarization method in achieving fairness to each resource. We examine the statistics of power consumption, SNR, and load variance for both methods through simulations. In addition, the complexity of the optimization of both methods is evaluated based on the required computing time
Energy Efficiency of Image Transmission in Embedded Linux based Wireless Visual Sensor Network
Wireless Visual Sensor Network (WVSN) is a system that consists of visual sensor nodes with an embedded processor. WVSN devices have limited resources of energy, computation capability, memory, and bandwidth. Due to these limitations the implementation of WVSN for large multimedia data, such as images, become a challenging task. Therefore, it is required compressed images prior to transmission. In addition to the limited resources, the system implementation strongly affects the efficiency of the working system. The main contribution of this research is to offer a technical solution of simpler image compression on the WVSN platform. JPEG 2000 is investigated as an alternative compression method to reduce the size of data transfer on WVSN using Embedded Linux as its operating system. Compressed images are transferred to a receiver on communication of IEEE 802.15.4.. This paper shows that the energy consumption for compression and transmission will reduce to only 10.48%, 13.60%, and 17.11% compared to raw image. BER will significantly reduce by implementing image compression. Therefore, it is demonstrated that this model significantly increases energy efficiency, memory utilization efficiency, and data transfer time with acceptable PSNR, compared to uncompressed images

Block-Type Pilot Arrangement with Alternating Polarity for ICI Mitigation in Mobile OFDM Systems
Improvement on Inter Carrier Interference (ICI) mitigation techniques for OFDM caused by Doppler effects through minimizing channel estimation error and decreasing channel time varying rate is investigated. The performance of pilot-aided channel estimation techniques depends on pilot placement and arrangement and also on the channel time varying rate. The block-type and comb-type pilot arrangements are studied through different numbers of guard bands, with or without the involvement of the Doppler shift compensation. The estimation of channel at mid-point of each OFDM symbol is derived from pilot frequencies based on the least square algorithm while the channel interpolation is done using piecewise linear approximation. For ICI mitigation technique we implement frequency domain zero forcing equalizer. We compare the performance of schemes with different pilot arrangements and Doppler shift compensations by measuring bit error rate with QPSK as sub-channel modulation scheme and with mobileto-fixed of single ring scattering as channel model. The results are in favour of block-type pilot arrangements with alternating polarity and Doppler compensation of 0:55 times the maximum Doppler shift
