Luigi Bazzani (1836-1927), made his reputation in the Post-Unitarian Rome as a vedutista and scenographer; here he joined the large group of artists that in the second half of the 19th century found a major source of inspiration in classical antiquities.
Unlike his colleagues working in the same tradition, however, Bazzani developed a more complex and aware relationship to archaeology and the antiquities: although his early repertoire included daily scenes set in ancient Rome or Pompeii, through his work he soon affirmed his dedication to a detailed, scientific depiction of antiquity; he accomplished archaeological views that stand out for their extraordinary accuracy and reveal his strong, ever increasing commitment to meticulous archaeological research.
His Pompeian watercolors executed with artful draftsmanship and technical mastery are invaluable documentation describing with the most precise accuracy the Pompeian buildings and wall paintings that since then have been irreparably damaged or destroyed. In these works, as well as in his paintings of the ancient Rome's monuments, Bazzani has been able to blend powerful suggestions of the past with a profoundly researched accuracy, adopting a methodology that reflects the state of archaeology in the last decades of the nineteenth century
In the tradition of studies on domestic architecture in Ancient Rome, the architectural analysis of the façade has been generally neglected because of the lack of accurate documentation.
This study focuses on the theme by examining the case studies of the Vesuvian cities, Pompeii and Herculaneum, that, on the contrary, due to their extraordinary preservation , offer the chance to thoroughly investigate the subject.
This study’s main aims consist in defining the role of the façade in the characterisation of the residential building and how it contributed to shape the overall look of the city while, on the other hand, understanding how the renewal of housing models, as found in the last period of Vesuvian cities’ life, had a great influence on the external configuration of the façade.
Through many literary sources that introduce the subject from an historical and sociological point of view and through the observation of a LARGE number of buildings, the analysis proceeds gaining progressive insight: first, the single elements of the facade are analysed and constantly compared both with the house internal arrangement and the urban space, subsequently the features of façades are analysed both in traditional houses ("ad atrium") and in those that werw redeveloped on a new layout.
Although only a small number of images representing sale scenes stands out from the rich imagery offered by the Vesuvian sites, they play a significant role in portraying the daily life, but have yet to be thoroughly analysed. Depicted as the final phase in a production process of a workshop or a shop or used as single commercial signs these representations of sales can be found not only in trade contexts, used for obvious advertising purposes, but they have been employed in household con- texts also, although to a lesser extent. With the aim to fully capture all the nuances of the subject and its deployment, the complete evidence survey on which this paper is based has taken into consideration not only representations of actual sales, but also all the comparable scenes or the imagery inspired by them as, for instance, some mythological episodes that allow for the hypothesis of the use of the same iconographic scheme (Daedalus and Pasifae, Achilles in Scyrus, Thetys in the for- gery of Ephestus). Particular attention has been paid to commercial signs from shops facades and trade spaces in order to understand the role played by representations of sale scenes within the varied imagery that had the purpose, yesterday like today, to convey short messages readily understandable. Basing on this large database this paper aims to raise issues about social impacts of trade activities and communication and persuasion strategies to influence the purchasing behavior
During the 2012 season, the team of the DHER (Domus Herculanensis Rationes) project has undertaken the analysis of the paintings and mosaics of the baths of the Casa dell’Albergo. For the first time a complete photo- grammetric campaign has been carried out, supplemented by detailed documentation and records of decorative features by tracing. The bath complex is one of the most remarkable examples of Second Style in Herculaneum and it is of particular importance since its paintings appear to have been based on models borrowed from Rome’s contemporary wall painting. The ongoing study encompasses interpretative reconstruction by means of vector drawings
The research activities at Pompeii insulae V 3 and V 4, connect to a broader field of studies on the topography of Pompeii and on the architecture of Pompeian domestic spaces. The buildings here described explicate different, often combined, functions: residential (V 3, 10; V 4, 3), manufacturing (V 3, 8), commercial (V 4, 6-8). The crucial aim of this research is the identification of the archaeological evidence of structural interventions such as buildings construction or restoration and adaptation of rooms, in order to present a chronologi-cal sequence from the Sarnnite period to the last decades of the site. The buildings facing on the north side of the Via di Nola immediately offer the general overview of the complex balance between space and function, as a consequence of different activities here involved in the cyde of food production (V 3, 8), food distribution and receptivity (V 4, 6-8). A shop retail or small craft enterprises are often located in rooms rearranged from domestic environments. The bakery, installed at V 3 8 is one of the best example here of this peculiar 'multi-functionality'. Those rooms closest to the streets are privileged places for the sale, while storage rooms are also located in postica — decentralized from the ordinary flow of movement within the building—, preferably in the shelter of secondary openings on side streets (e.g., thermopohum V 4, 6-8)
