She helps out in the Daya Dan which is the orphanage for mentally and physically handicapped children from ages 4-13. These children have been abandoned by their families because of their handicaps. Some of these children spend their days in a crib because they cannot move. The others have a small courtyard to play in or on the roof of the building. I spoke with Janet and asked what we could possibly send to make life a little bit better for these children. If anyone could help me out that would be great. She gave a few suggestions. They have a cassette player and Janet thought it would be nice to have some relaxing music to play to the children when they are massaging them. The children in the cribs could use crib mobiles so they have something to look. Cloth books would be great since the kids tend to put everything in their mouths and are hard on regular books. Although it is India it does get cool so warm cardigans would be much appreciated. The only thing to remember is that the clothes must be easy to put on as some of the kids have very stiff arms and legs and it makes it hard to dress them. One other thing Janet suggested is a jungle gym that could be collapsed right down flat. She was thinking of those cloth tunnels that have the wire in them. If anyone has any USED items (Janet doesn’t expect new) that would be wonderful. Please give me a call and I will come and pick up anything that you could donate. Thank you so very much. The municipal planning committee (read County Council) have in conjunction with our planning advisor, came up with a map showing land use restrictions surrounding lakes, rivers, streams, hamlets, villages and towns. As most communities are adjacent to rail lines they are not "square" with the world. This makes them intrude into many 1\4 sections. The rule of thumb applied to the map is: If a 1\4 is intruded onto then the next 1\4 "going out" would be included in the restricted area in order to get the full required distance. Now it is unlikely that a confined feeding facility would be built that close to a populated area but other uses that may eventually be included or unacceptable uses may eventually be. I am thinking of cow\calf wintering grounds, background pasture land, greenhouse, and any other use that people don’t want. If you want to look at the map at the amount of land that would be restricted along a wandering stream, such as the West Arrowwood Creek for example, the possible restrictions would be huge and involve a lot of farm steads. I believe this is unacceptable and personally can't support the proposed scenario. I would advise anyone with property adjacent to the above mentioned areas to look the map and see if it may affect you now or in the future. I have one. The County office renovations are more or less on schedule and the new look is starting to be visible. The mild weather has certainly been an asset to the construction crew. The Council has passed the budget for the upcoming year and there will be no increase. I did not support the budget finally approved, as I thought we were spending too much on some projects that are proposed. I am not opposed to the projects or such but think we should proceed slowly and develop a system that work for us, and then of it does, to expand it. Grant Lahd RHYME TIME Thank you to all the kids and their grown-ups that came to Rhyme Time this year. As always, it was a ton of fun! Remember that everyone is welcome. REPORTA HIGHWAY PROBLEM 1-888-877-6237 1-888-VS-ROADS My thoughts... Revered c^ordouv Crfti/tch I told those at church some time ago that Reese came up to me at lunch one Sunday and asked me how to get to heaven. I was kind of dumbstruck by the question, especially as Reese is not yet 4. I gave a suitably glib answer, but I continued to think about it and on the next Sunday I gave a slightly more • definitive answer. I have been thinking about the question on and off ever since. I suppose it takes on a slightly different sense of urgency at 72 than it does at age 4. All the songs and hymns that we sing Sunday by Sunday about heaven and the great reunions with those we have loved and have gone before us. But that doesn't answer the question of how we get to heaven. Last month, we had our usual Maundy Thursday dinner and went on to commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus and His disciples. At that time Jesus gave us His directions for eternal life. This is His summary of the great Commandments. "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." If we can do just these two things everything else will fall into place. What surer path to Heaven can there be? All the promises that we have received are awaiting their fulfillment. We will be reunited with those we have loved and lost. We will, with God's help, one day reach that eternal shore. Whatever age we are now, we are fortunate to have lived and grown up in such a time of medical advances that have assisted us in living this long. And we look forward to even greater advances that will offer longer and better lives to us. We must always remember that our time on earth is limited and we must do our part while we are here. But this life will surely end one day and we will die. The perishable cannot inherit the imperishable. That is how we get to heaven. We look forward to seeing it up close and in colour! - Editorial staff. Sonny and Marina Vannatta 65th Wedding Anniversary Marina & (Norman) Sonny Vannatta On June 23rd Sonny and Marina Vannatta celebrated a truly impressive life milestone - their 65th wedding anniversary. Marina has created a beautiful painting of the old Milo Post Office, and will be donating the artwork to the Milo Library & Archives or Milo Community Hall. Marina & Sonny were married in Cluny by the United Church Minister Rev. Morrison on June 23, 1956. Sonny was working at the time on the road construction and they lived in a holiday trailer which they pulled to each construction site. Marina & Sonny stayed in the Milo area and worked for a farmer for a couple of years. Then they moved to Cluny to help Marina's Father Ben Reimche build the Cluny Hilltop Service Station and Cafe on Highway *1. They ran the Cafe and Sonny worked in the Garage with Ben. Marina remembers these as fun times with the Cluny/Glieichen people. By that time they had 3 children: Wanda, Larry and Vicky. After 5 years they decided to go back to farming and worked for Jack Sutherland for 12 years. Sonny ran the work crew and Marina cooked for hired help, grew a huge garden and milked 6 cows, sometimes running a tractor - very busy times with a young family. Sonny and Marina then went farming on their own, renting land from Rose Northcott and Marie Vinjie. They lived on Rose’s homestead 16 miles northeast of Milo, farming 3.5 sections of dryland with help from family at harvest time. Both Sonny and Marina operated the farm machinery and had a mixed farming operation with cows, horses, pigs, and chickens. They lived there for 31 years, enjoying, a fun and busy life with friends and neighbors. Back row: Ryan Lucas, Megan Lucas, April Vannatta, Larry Vannatta, Tony Vanden Hoek, Braydon Miller, Trevor Miller Middle row: Wendy Vannatta, Erin Hessy, Jayden Hyggen Seated: Curtis & Preston Vannatta, Wanda Vannatta, Marina and Sonny Vannatta, Vicky Vanden Hoek Children seated: Brynn and Beckett Lucas Missing: Steven Vannatta, Lisa Vannatta (Spouse Jay) , Jackie Dontolewski and Lindsey Domolewski Marina, Wanda, Vicky, Sonny & Larry Sonny and Marina then moved to Lethbridge but still farmed the land, living in their trailer for the duration , travelling back and forth to the farm. Sonny and Marina finally retired and are currently living at Garden View Lodge, east of Park Place Shopping Mall. As soon as covid restrictions pass, they would love to see you all. It's the Bill that the Liberal Government says will ‘modernize’ the Broadcasting Act. What the Government doesn't like to talk about are the implications and powers that will be granted to the Canadian Radio-Television Commission, or the CRTC. When Bill C-10 inevitably becomes law thanks to Liberal, NDP, and Bloc Quebecois collusion, Canadians’ online content will be subject to moderation and enforced by the CRTC. The Liberals have maintained the ruse that Bill C- 10 is nothing more than a legal mandate to level the playing field between foreign big tech giants like Google and Facebook. That they pay their share in Canadian tax just as Canadian companies are subject to. However, Canadians are not convinced, nor will they be fooled. The costs will be passed down to the consumer and will not be transparent. By volume alone, Bill C-10 has been the issue I have received the most correspondence on. In the survey from my May e-newsletter (to which you should subscribe if you haven’t already!) a whopping 93% of respondents said that government should NOT regulate posts on social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Then comes the infamous 4.1 clause. The clause that protected Canadians’ content online was inexplicably stricken from the bill by the aforementioned gang of three. This clause would have ensured that, no matter the provisions put into effect by the other clauses in C-10, the content (or ‘programs') that Canadians would post online would not be subject to CRTC regulation. With this clause removed, the CRTC will have the power to compel social media sites to remove/modify/replace online content posted by everyday Canadians at its sole behest. No explanation, no criteria, no guidelines. Just because the CRTC can. The Minister of Canadian Heritage has gone on record saying that the CRTC 'has no interest' in regulating individual Canadians' content. However, that argument doesn't stand up to scrutiny either. Despite the apparent disinterest in regulating content, that doesn’t mean it’s not possible. This opens up a can of worms and the potential for a snowballing effect. Regulation of content will set a precedent defined by the unelected, unaccountable body of the CRTC which operates at arm

CW(^xM' November is the month for remembering. 2014 is a special anniversary year. In August, 1914, the world plunged in to the 'war to end all wars'. As we are all too aware, from our experiences of the past 100 years, it was really the start to most of the major conflicts of the 20th century. We don't need to rehash history and try to place blame. None of that will bring honour to a generation of young men who were killed, maimed or wounded on the battlefields of Europe 1914 -1918. In the carnage of the war, there are many examples of individual courage and compassion, countered by the inhumane ways devised to kill humanity. The use of mustard gas in warfare for the first time must rank as one of the most heinous of all time. 100,000 people died and 1,000,000 more were affected by the gassing. The gas did not restrict itself to soldiers, it killed anyone in its path. In the 4 year span of the war, the total casualties were 36 million (16 million died, 20 million wounded). So why on earth would we want remember such a horrible event in the history of the world? “Thosewho cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat That is why we must continue to remember, not only for Remembrance Day, when we pay tribute to those who, at the call of King & Country, laid down their lives for the peace and freedom that we enjoy today, but so that such a conflict may never again take place on earth ever again. "Only the dead have seen the end of war."2 For those millions of maimed and wounded that had to try to return to civilian life following the war's end, there was not even the inadequate assistance given to our present day veterans. Post traumatic stress disorder was not acknowledged, although shell shocked would have been the term used then. Soldiers bear the deepest wounds and scars of war."2 Anyone who took part in the fighting, in any capacity, and lived would have had emotion scars that would never heal. "War is hell. 4 And the Great War was possibly the most hellish of all wars. That is why we must remember it, so that never again should humanity be subject to such carnage. "Lest we forget, Lest we forget."5 (1),(2) Philosopher, essayist, poet, and novelist George Santayana (3) World War II General Douglas MacArthur (4) American Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman (5) Poet and novelist Rudyard KiplingThe month of October has flown by like a witch on a broom. We have had a very busy month full of activities and learning opportunities. Fire Chief Byron Thompson and Vulcan County Fire Marshall Stuart Larson made a surprise visit to our school for Fire Prevention Week. They initiated the fire alarm and observed us as we made our way out of the school. The elementary students watched a video and talked with Byron and Stuart about the importance of smoke detectors. Thanks to the Milo School Foundation we were able to have the Science in Motion program travel to our school. Our fantastic presenter Jen worked with the different grades doing hands on science experiments, we even had a mini-planetarium set up in the gym, the 7/8 class learned the science behind roller coasters, the grade 9 students made a pickle glow and the 1/2/3 class made ice cream with liquid nitrogen. The Milo School Foundation also provided funding to have author David A. Poulsen bring his writing workshops to our school. The students really enjoyed the humorous way he shared his love for writing and the creative process. The volleyball team practiced and played games and finished their season by hosting a one day volleyball tournament. The tournament was a huge success with teams from Arrowwood, Champion, Brant, and Carmangay schools competing. Thanks to Mealane Deitz for organizing the concession and to Leanne Bertschy for helping work the concession. The junior high held elections for student council and we are happy to see such an enthusiastic group take on the leadership of our student body. The student union is now starting the Mom’s Pantry Fundraiser, students will be coming around with order forms or they are available on our website as well. Miloschool.ca Our student council worked hard planning fun activities for our Halloween Celebration at the Milo School. Thanks to Barb and Ian Godkin for the donation of pumpkins for our students to carve into Jack-o’-lanterns. We are hopeful that driveway access will be corrected back to a normal state of affairs, that proper grades and drainage swales will be installed before drainage becomes a significant issue. The Village of Arrowwood can appreciate the frustration that this delay has caused and it has tried to work with residents to accommodate all access concerns that required an immediate solution. It appears that the Villages of Arrowwood and Milo have found a contractor to undertake some final infrastructure work for 2014. In Arrowwood, water and sewer services needs to be extended to the new Arrowwood Co-op development, along with some ditch grading and the installation of a new fire hydrant. In Milo, a water leak, a fire hydrant repair and some minor roadwork needs to be undertaken. As mentioned last month, the workshop “Finding Agreement” was hosted by Arrowwood and Milo and considered by all who attended to be highly worthwhile. Although designed for municipal officials, it is available for other community groups and organizations. The facilitator, Barbara McNeil, works for the Alberta Energy Regulator but has a longstanding relationship with Alberta Municipal Affairs. She has over twenty years experience as a mediator across a wide range of issues, including senior trainer in the University of Calgary’s Conflict Resolution Program, with experience as a member of the Municipal Government Board and Federal Farm Debt Review Board. Arrowwood and Milo were happy to have participants from both villages, Vulcan County, Town of Vulcan, Village of Carmangay, and diverse range of community associations. On October 2nd, the Village of Milo filed notice of appeal with Vulcan County and the Municipal Government Board (MGB) under section 690 of the Municipal Government Act. This appeal concerns a dispute with Vulcan County over a proposed residential subdivision development that it deems could have a detrimental impact on the village absent inter-municipal co-operation. As legislated, the MGB will open a hearing for this appeal within 60 days of notice being filed. Part of the project is a new veranda-like roof over the sidewalk on the west side (at left), and new siding is being installed. The siding is a rust brown wood look that is really attractive. Owners Robert and Darlene Phillips have been busy. The building was shored up a few years ago by fixing the basement walls and construction of a basement room for craft nights, parties, and meetings. - Photo by Frances Thompson The Milo Can Opener A Community Newsletter published by Volunteers Layout Editors: Cameron Klem 403-485-1592 Barb Godkin . 403-485-8389 Subscriptions Barb Godkin 403-485-8389 Can be left at Milo Library Notices Any Can Opener volunteer Advertising: (Single Insertion) (Annual - includes subscription) Business Directory 5.00 5.00 60.00 Quarter Page 6.00 6.00 72.00 Half Page 8.00 -8.00 96.00 Full Page 15.0015.00 180.00 Classified Ads 2.00FreeItems:EventNoticesAnnouncements:Wedding,AnniversaryBirths,Showers,etc.CardsofThanksNewsItemsArticlesofInterestEditorialContent:LetterstotheEditorarewelcome.Allsubmissionsmustbesigned.Letterswillnotbeprintedunlesssigned,andrequeststoremainanonymouswillnotbehonoured.Deadlines:Thedeadlineforphotoready(JPEG)adcopyorarticlesisabout5daysbeforetheendofamonth.Pleaseallowadditionallayouttimeforunformattedcopy.TheCanOpenerisnormallyprintedthelast2daysofamonth.SubscriptionRates:SinglecopyCoverPrice 2.00 Free Items: Event Notices „ Announcements: Wedding, Anniversary Births, Showers, etc. Cards of Thanks News Items Articles of Interest Editorial Content: Letters to the Editor are welcome. Christmas is a gift of love wrapped in human flesh and tied securely with the strong promises of God. Christmas is angelic music in the form of a carol or oratorio with a celestial descant. Christmas is "Glory to God", "good will to man", and "Joy to the world". Christmas is "Peace on earth" for those who accept it and live in unity with God's will. Christmas is a man on duty tending sheep, or machine, who senses the upward call and stops to worship. Christmas is a tall green tree which serves as festive altar for any household which discovers the true meaning behind it all. • i Christmas is a ringing bell calling a distraught humanity to gladness and hope. * Christmas is a glowing hearth gently placed in the winter of man's loneliness. Christmas is an -altar to which man can bring his heartache for comfort, his lostness for guidance, and his sin for forgiveness. Christmas is the sparkle of anticipation and the steady light of faith in the eyes of a little child as he hears the old, old story. Christmas is the shining star of hope in the sky of all mankind. Christmas is more than words can tell, for it is a matter for the heart to receive, believe, and understand. Author unknown From our house to your house, to all those you love, comes my Christmas blessing that the Christ Child will enter your heart and bless you all the days of your life. We have had an excellent start to the school year with our first report cards around +he corner heading home on November 29th. We have had a number of parent meetings already this year and we are looking forward to an evening dedicated to meeting with students and their parents/guardians on Thursday December 6 to give families an opportunity to discuss their child's achievements and challenges so far. If we have not already had the opportunity to discuss your child, or if the evening of the 6th does not work, please contact the office or your child's teacher and we will make arrangements to meet with you at another time. In the English-speaking countries men, women and children play silly but harmless jokes on April Fool’s Day. The victim is called an ‘April Fool’. The observance originated in France after the adoption of a reformed calendar by Charles IX in 1564. Up to that time, the New Year celebration began March 21 and ended April 1. When New Years Day was changed to January 1, some people still celebrated it in April, these people became known as ‘April Fools’. The custom of fooling friends and relatives became popular in France and spread to other countries. The victim in France is called an ‘April Fish’, and in Scotland, an ‘April gowk’.Milo labrary Hours: Tuesday 9:00 to 11:30 Thursday 9:30 to 12:30 1:30 to 5:00 New Books:!® Monthly we receive new adult psp^rbsck bsstssiisrs. "I'm proud of you," said the husband. The wife complained, "What did you say? You know I can't hear you without my hearing aid. " "I'm proud of you," the man shouted. That"s all right," she nodded. "I'm tired of you, too." \ m A COOKIE AND A KISS A house should have a cookie jar For when it's half past three And children hurry home from school As hungry as can be There's nothing quite so splendid In filling children up as spicy, fluffy ginger cakes And sweet milk in a cup. A house should have a mother Waiting with a hug No matter what a boy brings home a puppy or a bug. For children only loiter When the bells ring to dismiss If no one's home to greet them We scheme and toil and save; Then squander wealth In search of health And all we get's a grave. We live and boast of what we own We die and only get a stone. ***************** * * * * *5 ¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥ SHOLLJTIMES ¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥* THUR. FRI. SAT. SUN. 7:30 P.M. SAT. NIGHT 9:30 P M. Remember when on Saturday, the old square tub came in? We warmed the water on the stove, in pails of shiny tin. The Bath In winter we had ice and snow, in spring we had the slough; We strained it in an old worn sock. No polliwogs came through. Bank up the stove, then clear the room, the cleanest one went first. My dad was always last to bathe, he said his dirt was worst. The water soft as silky rain, old lye soap did the job. We all came out just squeaky clean, that square tub served a mob. No lye soap now, no polliwogs, Our baths they say are batter. Our waters hot, on tap no less, new soaps now make it better. We scratch and itch, have allergies, forever using lotions. Bath daily, yes and oftener, use lots of oils and potions, It s better now, it has to be. There’s only one small rub. low come I scratch and itch so much, since I left that old square tub? ■A A A AA AT*r AAAAAAAA*A AA A A A -ft If it’s made of the leftover stew That was made of the leftover lamb, Plus a leftover turnip or two Combined with some leftover ham And something you can't quite peg, But it seems to be leftover sole, And it's spotted with hard-boiled egg, My boy, that's a casserole! - G.S. Galbraith ***** "k k -k k -k HOST FAMILY PROGRAM The Wheat Country Special Needs Society is starting up a new program called the "Host Family". It is a Government funded support service for families that provides temporary relief for parents of handicapped children. The purpose of the program is to enable families to take a break from the responsibilities of caring for a child with a disability. This service is in response to the need for a planned break by parents whose children require a high level of parental support due to medical, developmental or behavioral difficulties. Parents will have the opportunity to have the child stay elsewhere for a short period of time in the care of someone in whom they have confidence. Ihe period of time the child or teenager stays in the "Host Families" home is dependent on their availability and the time commitments are flexible. The individual child that the "Host Family" is matched with is also determined by the family's need for relief and whether time required is consistent with what the "Host Family" is able to offer. Time varies from individual to individual and "Host Family" to "Host Family". If you are interested and have any questions or want to fill out an application to become a "Host Family", please contact Leanne at the Wheat Country Special Needs Society office, 485-2186. The Dangers of Public WiFi: Important Do’s and Don’ts Restaurants and cafes are open for dine-in. Business travel is resuming. Remote workers are ready to stretch their legs and venture outside. Whether on a plane or seated al fresco, more people are working on the go again. And to get work done between boarding passes and breadsticks, they're connecting to public WiFi. But are they aware of the dangers of public WiFi? Is it safe for employees to use open WiFi? And if you do find yourself logging on to a new network, what can you do to secure your and your employer’s data while you work? Do use password-protected WiFi A secured WiFi connection that requires a password to use is safer than public, unsecured WiFi. It may be more convenient to connect to an open network instantly. But a private network hosted by a cafe or hotel eliminates the risk of a hacker offering free WiFi to lure in cyber victims. So, always check if there is a private WiFi network, and ask for the password. Don’t send sensitive data in cleartext Attackers can set up man-in-the-middle attacks or other methods of cyber espionage on public WiFi. To reduce risk, avoid handling or sending sensitive data whenever possible. That means steering clear of financial data, Pll (Personal Identifiable Information), credentials and passcodes, and any restricted or confidential information until you're back on a secured network. Do use a VPN A virtual private network, or VPN, allows you to establish a secure, protected connection to a corporate network. Even if you’re on public WiFi, the VPN provides an extra layer of security and makes it more difficult for cybercriminals to snoop. Many businesses have a VPN for employee use, but you can also download one yourself. With the amount of work and entertainment happening online, a VPN is now almost as basic as anti-virus protection. Don’t auto-connect to public WiFi Auto-connecting to WiFi can feel convenient. An instant connection wherever you go! But, it comes with hidden dangers, so turn off auto-connect for both WiFi and Bluetooth. Then, each time you’re in a new location, you can intentionally choose which network you want to use. Do connect with HTTPS HTTP and HTTPS are similar protocols that display web data on your device. (You can see what you are using by looking at the beginning text in the address box at the top of your Internet browser.) But, there’s one crucial difference: HTTPS (S for Secure) is a more secure, more advanced version. It keeps passwords private and is a safer connection so that other confidential information stays, well, confidential. So, when you are on public WiFi, check if the website you're using is HTTPS. If it isn't, wait until you’re back on a secured, private network before logging in or sending any data to that website. Do use a password manager and SSO (Single Secure Sign-on) Passwords are so mundane that we forget how critical they are to our online security. Unfortunately, public WiFi can expose us to attacks that allow cybercriminals to steal passwords. That's why it's essential to use a different password on every single website. A password manager simplifies the creation and management of strong passwords for all of your online accounts. Don’t neglect device security Security at the individual device level is essential, too. Keep software, in particular Internet browsers, and apps up-to-date. Updates have important security and bug fixes, so apply an update when one is available. Also, run anti malware software to spot malicious activity on your device. Don’t click links or open attachments from people you don’t know or seem out of character. Remember that links in apps like Facebook are not automatically safe - far from it in fact. And if you think you've spotted some unusual activity, investigate right away, and get help if you're not sure what you’re dealing with. With a few simple precautions, you can safely and conveniently work or entertain yourself while on the go, even when public WiFi is the only connection available. Get a password manager to start beefing up your password security and use our steps above to work safely from anywhere. I go somewhere to get something and then wonder what I’m here after. Life as an Albertan.... • “Vacation” means going to Calgary for the weekend. • You measure distance in hours. • You often switch from “heat” to “A/C” in the same day. • You know people who have hit deer with their vehicles more than once. • Your grandparents drive at 100 km/hr through four meters of snow during a blizzard without flinching. • You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend knows how to use them. • You design your kids Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit. • Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled. • You know both seasons: Winter and Construction. • You are bundled up in three sweaters, a parka, ski pants, a toque, two pairs of mittens, boots past your knees in 3 feet of snow in a -35 (-80 with wind chill) blizzard. Your eyelashes are frozen together, your nose is running, you can't feel your toes, and you still stop at the gas station for a Slurpee on the way home. • GOPHER = SPEED BUMP When the cop pulled me over, he said "Your eyes are red, Have you been drinking?" i replied "Your eyes are glazed. Have you been eating donuts?" We laughed and laughed... I need bail money.Mt/ tWcnA^lvh... In my line of work, Bible reading is a constant. Each year as I read and reread the Good Book, something new stands out or catches my attention. Recently I was reading the book of Haggai - not one of the major prophets of the Old Testament, but nevertheless, one which seems to speak to this age. See what you think: "Now therefore thus says the Lord of Hosts: Consider how you have fared? You have sown much, and harvested little; you eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and you that earn wages earn wages to put them into a bag with holes.” In the relevant words of that prophet of modern times, Dr. Phil, “And how is that working for you?” (You might take this a little more seriously if the preacher wasn't somewhere on a cruise ship at this very moment, so I guess I am not immune. Hopefully I do enough good in the community to take some time away and, without guilt, briefly live the good life.) Modern society is all too consumed with 'me' and 'things' and 'pleasures'. I think what the prophet is saying is, that: • Unless you are grounded in the larger reality of the world; • Realize how very fortunate is your fate, that you have been blessed by God; • That you work not just for yourself, but to ensure that the poor around you are fed, clothed, & maintained, and • Live every day with honest regard for your fellow man, ... there is no hope that the Lord of Hosts will look kindly on your life. He will indeed consider how you have fared on your earthly journey and decide whether you have done enough. When was it that I saw you hungry and fed you? Or thirsty and gave you drink? When did I see you as a stranger and took you in? Or naked and clothed you? When did I see you sick or in prison and visited you? Verily I say unto thee, inasmuch as thou hast done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, thou hast done it unto me. The Holy Family were themselves refugees, fleeing into Egypt to escape from another evil ruler, King Herod, so I believe that He would sympathize with the plight of the millions of refugees fleeing a conflict not of their making, trying to find sanctuary and a new life. Consider how you have fared. Consider how you can, in turn, show your gratitude by supporting those whose need is great. January has now come on gone, with bitter cold days and some almost like summerl Along with it we have been busy with ice skating, studying and preparing for exams and having awesome literacy activities! February is KINDNESS month - help us to spread love and joy at school by talking about kindness at home in different ways. Family Literacy Day was a hit on January 27th with guests from the fire department, the RCMP, the Vulcan Coalition of Early Childhood Development with Rainbow Literacy, community members and families. We had a fabulous visit with Tanya Elliott, an author from Brooks, Alberta. She is also a teacher, and spent time with the students inspiring them to use their imagination and pursue their dreams. Exam week was the last week of January. It was a great way to see where our students are doing well and where they are struggling. Remember that there are many factors that limit or contribute to success in a test: level of confidence, anxiety and the amount of sleep and food eaten, all play a role in addition to the student’s knowledge of the subject. As well, some students may be struggling with reading, expression of ideas, processing information and attention due to differences in their abilities and development. Everyone is on their own personal learning journey and it is our job (with you) to discover the various ways to realize everyone's potential. Tests are only one sample of many other aspects of student learning. In February information will be sent home to communicate with parents and guardians how the results were and areas requiring further growth for our school. We are looking forward to a few things in February! Not only is there the week off February 15-19, but also on February 22 there is a special dance performance, SAFIRE, which focuses on a message about confidence, leadership and bullying from the Canadian School Presenters. And... on February 23 we are going SKIIING to Castle Mountain! Oh Yeah! Finally in February there will be two surveys for you to complete. One will be for the school and the other is for the government, called the Accountability Pillar Survey. Completing both surveys is very important in order for us to learn your perspective about what we are doing well and what we could improve on. Please read below for more information. Thank you for your awesome support in your child’s learning! Have an epic February! -Ms. Prud’Homme Important Message: Survey info coming home soon! Attached with this News Update is information about surveys for parents and students to complete. This will be printed and sent home for school parents. There will be two surveys. One is for the school’s information, as an opportunity to get feedback from students and parents now. The other is the government survey from Alberta Education, which comes out every year, called The Accountability Pillar Survey. This survey is what we use to plan school goals by assessing our level of school achievement and areas requiring improvement. Please complete both surveys so that we can have information to help us grow further! If you would like to come in to the school during the day to complete the surveys online, you are welcome to do so. Laptops will be available in the library for the survey to be completed. Simply come in and sign in to the office and visif the library laptops. Thank you very much, in advance, for taking the time to complete the surveys! We appreciate it! First “WE READ” session went very well. The students were engaged and enthusiastic - this is a time for teachers to meet and collaborate. Let us know if you would like to help read to kids! Family Literacy Day was on January 27 and we all enjoyed the visit from guest author, Tanya Elliott along with family and community reading time and a potluck lunch! Awesome! Art classes start the second week of February on Thursdays with Vulcan Art Teacher Michael Shain, for the 3-5 and 6-9 classes. The science lab and library have a bright and fresh coat of paint. Free Family Movie Night was well attended with an audience ranging from pre-school to grandparents enjoying a good laugh at the antics of the Minions. Thank you for attending! We are now working on developing a new school sign for above our front entrance! Check out the photography from the photography options class! Students learned how to communicate creatively. February 2016* Milo School * www. miioschooLcaFebruary win feature rno« project* LEARNING SPOTLIGHT Congratulations! In January we began nominating Learners of the Week! Family Literacy Day! Thank you to all that came out to share Family Literacy Day with us at the school. Special thanks goes to Tanya Elliott, the guest author who came to speak with all of the classes. She also did creative writing activities with the junior highs. Tanya’s book, The Secret Blanket is for sale online as well! Thank you to all that took part in organizing the event, participating, and to all of the community members from Milo and Vulcan who visited! The potluck lunch was fabulous as always and we especially enjoyed the delicious cake that was donated by the Milo Seed Cleaning Plant. The massive Kilauea flow is coming from a lava tube at the Kamokuna ocean entry on the southeast side of the Big Island. The lava is gushing from a tube exposed when a huge, 26-acre lava delta collapsed into the ocean at the site on New Year’s Eve. The lava stream started out as a drizzle coming down the sea cliffs after the New Year collapse, but has recently increased in intensity. This firehose event is unusual because it has lasted so long. Usually when a flow opens up like this, the lava quickly builds new land below and plugs the entry. In this case, the topography must be very deep and a new delta is not forming yet. Dale and Colleen Deitz, and Ian and Barb Godkin were lucky enough to see this sight on their recent visit. There are many people who, if asked, would say that they are Christian. It is easy to say, but in many cases it is not the truth. There are those who attend church each and every Sunday and feel that makes them Christian. But sadly going to church no more makes you a Christian, than sitting in the garage will make you a Ford (or Chev, Chrysler, etc.) In the Bible, there are examples of Jesus walking by and simply saying "Follow me" and disciples walk away from what they are doing, giving up everything in life they have held dear and following Christ. In most cases, following Him resulted in their death. They indeed gave all they had to follow Christ. But what do we give up or do for Christ? Join the worship committee (choir, altar guild, etc.)? Attend bible study? Too busy. Speak out against injustice in the world? No Volunteer to read at church on Sunday? Too shy. Teach Sunday School? Can't Volunteer to visit the sick & home bound? Not my resoonsibilitv. How different lives could be if we, like those who did rise up and follow Christ, would forget all the excuses that we can come up with and just decide that we too can follow Christ and make a real difference in the world. How different our lives would be if we could think of more reasons to follow Christ, and fewer excuses about how difficult it is to be a Christian in today's world. The Christian faith has not been tried untried.G. K. Chesterton Our Lord gave up His life for you! What have you given up for Him? On September 17,1994, Alabama's Heather Whitestone was selected as Miss America 1995. Here's her answer to her question... Question: If you could live forever, would you and why? Answer: "I would not live forever, because we should not live forever, because if we were supposed to live forever, then we would live forever, but we cannot live forever, which is why I would not live forever." - Heather Whitestone "Whenever I watch TV and see those poor starving kids all over the world, I can't help but cry. I mean I'd love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff." - Mariah Carey "Smoking kills. If you're killed, you've lost a very important part of your life." - Brooke Shields, during an interview to become Spokesperson for federal anti-smoking campaign. "Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest crime rates in the country." -- Mayor Marion Barry, Washington, DC. (Before his arrest for smoking crack cocaine, conviction, six months in prison, and re-election as mayor.) "I'm not going to have some reporters pawing through our papers. We are the president." - Hillary Clinton commenting on the release of subpoenaed documents. "That lowdown scoundrel deserves to be kicked to death by a jackass, and I'm just the one to do it." -- A congressional candidate in Texas. "It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it." - Al Gore, Vice President of the United States. "I love California. I practically grew up in Phoenix." - Dan Quayle "We’ve got to pause and ask ourselves: How much clean air do we need?" - Lee lacocca "We don't necessarily discriminate. We simply exclude certain types of people." -- Colonel Gerald Wellman, ROTC Instructor. "If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure." - Bill Clinton, President of the United States. "Traditionally, most of Australia's imports come from overseas." - Keppel Enderbery, Australian politician and judge. "Your food stamps will be stopped effective March 1992 because we received notice that you passed away. May God bless you. You may reapply if there is a change in your circumstances." -- Department of Social Services, Greenville, South Carolina "If somebody has a bad heart, they can plug this jack in at night as they go to bed and it will monitor their heart throughout the night. And the next morning, when they wake up dead, there’ll be a record." ~ Mark S. Fowler, FCC ChairmanFebruary 2017 Milo Library jMoItkarpgrcIteii^ Milo Library Websites Want to live longer? Read a book https:// w w w. weforum. or g/ agenda/2016/10/want-to -live-ion ger-read-a- book/ Could a bit of light reading every day add years to your life?A new study by Yale University found that reading books was positively correlated with increased lifespan - people who read books lived for around two years longer than those who didn’t. Adding a few more pages In the study, published in the journal Social Science and Medicine, researchers evaluated data on 3,635 Americans aged over 50. Respondents were separated into those who read for 3.5 hours or more a week, those who read for up to 3.5 hours a week, and those who didn’t read at all, controlling for factors such as gender, race and education. The researchers discovered that those who read for more than 3.5 hours a week were 23% less likely to die within 12 years, while those who read for up to 3.5 hours a week were 17% less likely to die within that period. Co-author of the study, Becca R. Levy, Professor of Epidemiology at Yale University, told the New York Times, “People who report as little as a half-hour a day of book reading had a significant survival advantage over those who did not read.” Unhwrsltyd Lethbridge H University of Lethbridge Library Southern Alberta Newspaper Collection & We are happy to announce that the Milo Library Archives is going to partner with the University of Lethbridge Archives. In Arrowwood, the villages continue to issue bi-monthly billings and will not be returning to a discounted annual billing structure. However, given the fixed rates, it is possible for landlords to pay for 12 months at time. We will continue bill for water use overage, and we can bill both landlords and tenants. In Milo, there was an oversight prior to processing the January billing which meant that the new garbage rate was not applied. What this means is that February bills will include to the new garbage rate of 24 (eliminating the recycling and capitalization charges) and a one-time adjustment charge of $4.50

CKifrkbiUl't JWffT Spwfo/je tien' (GeKWv tut<£ QMa*v SsWbcfv) y ////////// /,TOPS Group Support Deemed Important Component of Weight Loss Success Health authorities, including the American Dietetic Association, the American Heart Association, and the American Medical Association all agree that trendy diets and “magic” weight loss pills do not work. Americans spend 6 billion dollars a year on weight-loss products, yet rates of overweight and obesity have grown to epidemic proportions over the last 20 years. The best approach to weight control is to adopt sensible behaviors, sound eating habits and as research suggests — consistent support. Barbara Cady, president of TOPS Club Inc, a non-profit, non-commercial weight loss support organization, know this well. “TOPS is dedicated to combining tools for healthy living and sensible weight management with exceptional group support,” says Cady. “Our weight loss support program lets people know that they are not alone, that there are others who understand what they are going through. Support is what makes TOPS unique and successful - it is the cornerstone of our organization.” TOPS philosophy is that the best way to lose and maintain a healthy weight is through education, encouragement and consistent support from others. Research validates this belief. A study conducted by the National Weight Control Registry found that people who lost weight and attended regular weight loss support group meetings for one year maintained their full weight loss. Study participants who did not attend support group meetings regained almost half of the weight. People who participate is support groups say the experience gives them a forum to exchange valuable information while providing an emotional connection when they might feel isolated by others. TOPS meetings provide an opportunity to share information ranging from reasonable menu plans and the benefits of exercise to tips on strengthening social relationships and self-acceptance. TOPS Club, Inc. is a powerful, nonprofit, noncommercial weight-loss support organization with thousands of associate chapters across the U.S. and Canada. Our Milo TOPS Chapter began in May 1974. Currently we have eight members and we meet every Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. in the Lutheran Church basement. If you would like more information concerning our local TOPS chapter please feel free to call our Chapter Leader, Susan Ivers. If you are looking for an affordable, informative, ongoing weight loss support program then maybe TOPS is for you.
