'If I should die tonight' poem
No full textHumorous poem copied by Harrison Kerr and written by Benjamin Franklin King ca. 1890. The poem, titled "If I should die tonight," jokes about money owed to the author and the shock he would experience at being repaid upon his death. It was written as a parody of a serious contemporary poem of the same title.
Harrison Henry Kerr (1839-1901), born in North Georgetown, Ohio, served along with his brother, Ezra, as a private in Company D of the 58th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, Mississippi, on December 29, 1862., and held for three months before being exchanged and returning to his regiment. He was discharged on January 14, 1865. Following the war, he was married to Elizabeth (Rettig) Kerr. The two lived in Cleveland and had one son, Harrison McKinley Kerr. In 1888, he joined the Memorial Post No. 141, Grand Army of the Republic. He is buried in North Georgetown Cemetery

The fictional narrative was inspired by an interview with Rupert Max Stuart in The Age on August 19, 2002, titled, 'Max Stuart reflects, finds peace'. Rupert Max Stuart is a South Australian Aboriginal man who was imprisoned in the 1950s for the murder and rape of Mary Hattam, a young white girl. The case created controversy around issues of race and capital punishment for many years. 'Patterns of Being' is a fictional narrative about grief and reconciliation. A girl named Dawn is murdered and police accuse a carnival worker named Rufus. The story is told by Annie, who is Dawn's cousin. She recalls her own experiences but also imagines the remembrances of Lilly, Dawn's mother and Aril, a nymph-like girl who moves through dimensions of time and space. The imagery is inspired by the environment of regional South Australia and the narrative shows Annie's psychic evolution. Annie is 'both the agent and the theatre of individuation' (Simondon). RNA-seq vs dual- and single-channel microarray data: sensitivity analysis for differential expression and clustering
No full textWith the fast development of high-throughput sequencing technologies, a new generation of genome-wide gene
expression measurements is under way. This is based on mRNA sequencing (RNA-seq), which complements the already
mature technology of microarrays, and is expected to overcome some of the latter’s disadvantages. These RNA-seq data pose new challenges, however, as strengths and weaknesses have yet to be fully identified. Ideally, Next (or Second) Generation Sequencing measures can be integrated for more comprehensive gene expression investigation to facilitate analysis of whole regulatory networks. At present, however, the nature of these data is not very well understood. In this paper we study three alternative gene expression time series datasets for the Drosophila melanogaster embryo development, in order to compare three measurement techniques: RNA-seq, single-channel and dual-channel microarrays. The aim is to study the state of the art for the three technologies, with a view of assessing overlapping features, data
compatibility and integration potential, in the context of time series measurements. This involves using established tools for each of the three different technologies, and technical and biological replicates (for RNA-seq and microarrays, respectively),
due to the limited availability of biological RNA-seq replicates for time series data. The approach consists of a sensitivity analysis for differential expression and clustering. In general, the RNA-seq dataset displayed highest sensitivity to differential expression. The single-channel data performed similarly for the differentially expressed genes common to gene sets
considered. Cluster analysis was used to identify different features of the gene space for the three datasets, with higher similarities found for the RNA-seq and single-channel microarray dataset

No full textRecently, a nonlinear Fourier transform-based Kerr-nonlinearity identification algorithm was demonstrated for a 1000 km NZDSF link with accuracy of 75%. International Harmonization and the Gains from Trade
No full textInternational harmonization of standards and regulations is often a goal expressed in trade agreements because it is expected to yield gains from trade. Absence of progress toward harmonization is often interpreted as being motivated by protectionism, with differences in standards and regulations seen as non-tariff barriers. While protectionism may well be the source of resistance to harmonization, there may be other reasons it is not pursued. These alternative explanations have not received much attention from economists. In this article some of these alternatives are outlined - demand effects from altering standards, switching costs, proprietary technologies. Magnetised Kerr/CFT correspondence
No full textAbstractThe tools of Kerr/CFT correspondence are applied to the Kerr black hole embedded in an axial external magnetic field. Its extremal near horizon geometry remains a warped and twisted product of AdS2×S2. The central charge of the Virasoro algebra, generating the asymptotic symmetries of the near horizon geometry, is found. It is used to reproduce, via the Cardy formula, the Bekenstein–Hawking entropy of the magnetised Kerr black hole as the statistical microscopic entropy of a dual CFT. The presence of the background magnetic field makes available also a second dual CFT picture, based on the U(1) electromagnetic symmetry, instead of the only rotational one of the standard non-magnetised Kerr spacetime.A Meissner-like effect, where at extremality the external magnetic field is expelled out of the black hole, allows us to infer the value of the mass for these magnetised extremal black holes.The generalisation to the CFT dual for the magnetised extreme Kerr–Newman black hole is also presented
