A micro ultrasonic motor using a micro-machined cylindrical bulk PZT transducer
In this paper, a micro ultrasonic motor using a micro-machined bulk piezoelectric transducer is introduced. The cylindrical shaped bulk piezoelectric transducer, a diameter of 0.8 mm and a height of 2.2 mm, was developed as stator transducer for traveling wave type ultrasonic motor. The transducer was made of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) bulk ceramics, and formed by micro machining, Ni plating and laser beam cutting process. Using this stator transducer, we have fabricated a cylindrical micro ultrasonic motor, a diameter of 2.0 mm and a height of 5.9 mm. We have also evaluated some characteristics and succeeded in driving the micro ultrasonic motor.</p

Froggie Went a-Courting
Kay Thresto: I used to stay with my grandmother and she sang to me all the time. And I remember more of what she sang but she died when I was five and so I just remember little snatches of things. And I remember part of “Froggie Went a-Courting” and I remember it had lots and lots of verses about the wedding guests but I don’t’ remember. Well let’s see, I remember the first-

Recent Results From the EU POF-PLUS Project: Multi-Gigabit Transmission Over 1 mm Core Diameter Plastic Optical Fibers
Recent activity to achieve multi-gigabit transmission over 1 mm core diameter graded-index and step-index plastic optical fibers for distances up to 50 meters is reported in this paper. By employing a simple intensity-modulated direct-detection system with pulse amplitude or digital multi-tone modulation techniques, low-cost transceivers and easy to install large-core POFs, it is demonstrated that multi-gigabit transmission up to 10 Gbit/s over 1-mm core diameter POF infrastructure is feasible. The results presented in this paper were obtained in the EU FP7 POF-PLUS project, which focused on applications in different scenarios, such as in next-generation in-building residential networks and in datacom applications
Gas volume fraction and velocity profiles: vertical and inclined bubbly air-water flows
Upward inclined gas-liquid flows are frequently encountered in the oil industry and data relating to the local gas volume fraction distribution and the local gas velocity distribution is important, for example, in pressure gradient prediction and in modeling oil well 'blowouts'. In this paper measurements are presented of the local gas volume fraction distribution and the local axial gas velocity distribution which were taken in bubbly air-water flows in an 80 mm diameter pipe which was inclined at angles of 0°, 15° and 30° to the vertical. Qualitative arguments are presented to explain the influence of the liquid superficial velocity on the local gas volume fraction distribution in inclined flow and also to explain the very high axial gas velocities observed towards the upper side of the inclined pipe
Related Data for: LED quality impacts on plant growth and photosynthetic light use efficiency of halophyte vegetable Mesembryanthemum crystallinum grown under two saline conditions
There is very little study on the effects of LED quality on Mesembryanthemum crystallinum grown under different salinities. In this study, M. crystallinum was grown under red/blue (R/B) LED ratios of 0.9, 1.6. 2.0 and 2.8 with 100 and 500 mM NaCl and exposed to the same level of photosynthetic photon flux density, PPFD (290 µmol m‑2 s‑1, 12 h photoperiod). Fourteen days after transplanting, plants with 100 mM NaCl had significantly higher values of growth parameters including shoot and root fresh weight, total leaf area and specific leaf area than with 500 mM NaCl. Grown with 100 mM NaCl under R/B 0.9, M. crystallinum had significantly lower shoot FW and total leaf area than under other R/B ratios. However, LED quality did not seem to affect the growth parameters of M. crystallinum grown with 500 mM NaCl. All plants had similar higher leaf succulence and water content but lower leaf dry matter content with 100 mM NaCl than with 500 mM NaCl. Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) acidity of plants grown with 500 mM NaCl was about 4-fold higher than with 100 mM NaCl, indicating induction and stimulation of CAM photosynthesis. Chlorophyll fluorescence Fv/Fm ratios were greater than 0.8 for all plants, suggesting that maximum efficiency of PSII was unaffected by LED quality and salinity. M. crystallinum grown with 500 mM NaCl had lower electron transport rate, ETR but higher non-photochemical quenching, NPQ than with 100 mM NaCl, implying that photosynthetic light use efficiency was affected when switching C3 to CAM photosynthesis under high salt stress. M. crystallinum grown with100 mM NaCl had higher photochemical quenching, qP and ETR under R/B 0.9 than under R/B 2.8 and all plants with 500 mM NaCl. In conclusion, LED quality had different impacts on photosynthetic light-use efficiency of M. crystallinum grown under different salinities and thus resulting in different growth and productivity
Fiber design for high-power low-cost Yb:Al-doped fiber laser operating at 980nm
We investigated an Yb:Al-doped depressed-clad hollow optical fiber (DCHOF) for cladding-pumped 980nm laser operation. With a careful design, the nonzero fundamental-mode cutoff characteristics of a DCHOF allows the competing 1030-1060nm emission to be filtered out, despite being quite close to 980nm. The laser yielded over 3W of output power in a diffraction limited beam (M -parameter degrades to 2.7, as a result of increased cladding-mode lasing, as the cladding thickness is reduced
