Hazel Lawrence Interview
Hazel Lawrence was born on September 7, 1891, in Barbarton, Ohio. She was the widow of Marion L. Lawrence. Hazel was a 1915 graduate of the College of Wooster. She taught Junior High School and was a leader for Camp Fire Girls. She also was a leader in Maumee and Toledo Girl Scouts, where she trained Girl Scout leaders and board members. She received a "50 Year" pin for her service in 1986. Mrs. Lawrence was also an Elder, choir member and Sunday School teacher at the first Presbyterian Church of Maumee. She died on November 17, 1992 at the age of 101

Oral history interview with Hazel (Cleveland) Saye conducted by Kara L. Pederson on November 20, 1993. Hazel Saye discusses her early childhood, education at Plainwell High School, coming to WMU as a student, student life on WMU, her favorate professors, and student social life. She graduated in 1933 and took a job teaching in Wyandotte, Michigan until receiving a library degree in 1939. She talks about her first job as a teacher, her students including Zack York, and working during the Depression. She discusses coming to WMU, her positions as librarian, teaching at the campus training school, moving from East Campus to the West Campus, working with faculty, and the departmentalization within libraries. She also discusses the attack on Pearl Harbor and the changes to the university as a result. Saye served as circulation librarian from 1939 until she retired in 1965. Hazel (Corylus avellana) pollards
Hazel (Corylus avellana L.) always forms more or less ring shaped multistemmed shrubs in naturally grown or coppiced stands. Examples are given of large hazel shrubs in the Åland Islands, SW Finland. If only one above ground stem is allowed to develop, the hazel developes into a tree. Hazel trees are rather rare; a few examples are mentioned from Finland, Sweden and Norway. Hazels are rarely pollarded. A few have occurred in the Åland Islands and in Sweden. Two stands with hazel pollards in Scotland are described and the former use of these hazels is discussed. The reason for pollarding hazel was perhaps the use of the cut branches for fertilising meadows and cereal fields, or as fodder for goats. Another reason could be that the hazels were pollarded for producing nuts
A Novel Medium for Enhancing Callus Growth of Hazel (Corylus avellana L.)
AbstractPaclitaxel is a powerful antimitotic agent with excellent activity against a range of cancers. Hazel has been described as a paclitaxel-producing species among angiosperms. Fast-growing callus is a prerequisite for the success of callus production and then paclitaxel production. Therefore, optimizing the medium culture for enhancing callus growth is a crucial step for paclitaxel production. In this research, Murashige and Skoog (1962) (MS) medium was optimized for improving callus growth of hazel (Corylus avellana L.). The M10 medium (MS medium with pH 6.0 and supplemented with 1000 mg l−1 spirulina powder, 1000 mg l−1 casein hydrolysate and 3 g l−1 gelrite) significantly improved hazel callus growth. This modified MS medium increased callus fresh weight (55.8%) as compared to the control. M10 medium increased fatty acids yield of callus (66.7%) as compared to the control. Liquid M10 medium maintained growth over a longer period of time and also increased slightly, the paclitaxel production as compared to the control. This novel medium is promising for facilitating the mass production of hazel callus as a source of valuable metabolites including paclitaxel, linoleic and oleic acids.</jats:p

In the Faculty of Agriculture plant nursery at the University of Novi Sad, Serbia, Common hazel (Corylus avellana L.) cultivars were grafted on the Turkish hazel (Corylus colurna L.) rootstock. To produce high-quality planting material, seeding success, growth and development of one- year-old seedling was followed. This paper presents results of Turkish hazel A1, B1, B4, B7 and C3 genotype nut germination from sowing performed in 2009. The results indicate high percentage of germinated nuts and a high plant survival rate. One-year-old seedlings measured during a vegetation rest period in 2010 and two-year-old seedlings measured in 2011 were better developed compared to the seedlings examined in the previous years, indicating that the application of the drip irrigation system in seedling development yields positive results.U rasadniku Poljoprivrednog fakulteta u Novom Sadu, na Rimskim Šančevima razvijena je tehnologija kalemljenja kultivara leske na mečjoj leski (Corylus colurna L.) kao podlozi. Praćen je uspeh setve, rast i razvoj jednogodišnjih i dvogodišnjih sejanaca u cilju proizvodnje kvalitetnih podloga i sadnog materijala. U radu su prikazani rezultati klijavosti orašica genotipova A1, B1, B4, B7 i C3 mečje leske iz setve obavljene 2009. godine. Orašice su pokazale visok procenat klijavosti i momenat preživljavanja biljaka. Jednogodišnji sejanci mereni u toku mirovanja vegetacije 2010. godine i dvogodišnji sejanci mereni 2011. bili su razvijeniji u odnosu na ispitivanja sejanaca ranijih godina. Primena sistema za navodnjavanje kap po kap, dala je dobre rezultate pri razvoju sejanaca u ispitivanim godinama

The expansion of hazel (Corylus avellana L.) in the southern Alps: a key for understanding its early Holocene history in Europe?
International audienceIn Northwestern and Central Europe the Holocene expansion of Corylus occurred before or at the same time as that of other thermophilous trees (e.g. Quercus). This sequence of expansion has been explained by migrational lag, competition, climatic changes, human assistance, or disturbance by fire. In the southern Alps, however, hazel expanded around 10,500 cal yr BP, more than two millennia after oak had become important. This delayed expansion is in contrast with the rapid expansion often assumed for hazel in central Northern Europe.We use two well-dated pollen and charcoal records from the southern forelands of the Alps: Lago Piccolo di Avigliana and Lago di Origlio. We conclude that distance of refugia, speed of seed dispersal, and competition cannot sufficiently explain the absence of the hazel expansion prior to the establishment of mixed oak forests in the southern Alps. Instead our records indicate that higher moisture availability and low temperatures inhibited hazel and favoured the establishment of pine and mixed oak forests during the Allerød. The expansion of hazel ∼11,000–10,500 cal yr BP was favoured by a combination of high seasonality, summer drought and frequent fires, which helped hazel to out-compete oak in the south as well as north of the Alps
