Real Estate Managemen
Complete genome sequences generated using hybrid Nanopore-Illumina assembly of two non-typical Avibacterium paragallinarum strains isolated from clinically normal chicken flocks
We report the complete genome sequences of two non-typical Avibacterium paragallinarum (AP) strains isolated from chickens in the absence of clinical signs. The availability of these genomes can aid scientists in improving current diagnostics and increase our understanding of AP epidemiology and pathogenicity in chickens. This article is published as Hashish, Amro, Maria Chaves, Nubia R. Eight complete and four draft genome sequences of nonpathogenic Avibacterium paragallinarum isolates from naive, healthy layer chickens in the USA
Avibacterium paragallinarum is a primary bacterial pathogen causing infectious coryza (IC), a respiratory disease of chickens. However, nonpathogenic Avibacterium paragallinarum (npAP) has been discovered in naive, healthy chickens, complicating IC diagnosis. Here, we report eight complete and four draft genome sequences of npAP isolates from four US states. This article is published as Shelkamy, Mostafa MS, Amro Hashish, Mariela E. Innovation in a large scale agile organisation: A case study of ABN AMRO
Agile methods seem to be the answer for today’s turbulent industries, and with it roots in software development, coincides neatly with the increasingly digital world we live in. ABN AMRO also decided to implement a large scale agile framework tailored to their company. Agile methodologies are known to work well at small scale and in an IT context, however at ABN AMRO they’ve implemented it for over 6000 employees from both business and IT departments. Unsurprisingly ABN AMRO faces challenges within this agile organisation. One area in which they’re struggling is managing innovation in a way that aligns with the flow of the tailored and scaled agile organisation. The objective was therefore; To design solution that better aligns innovation processes with the flow of the tailored and scale agile landscape. In addition, literature on large scale tailored agile transformation and innovation management within financial services firms is scarce. Both areas are relevant, however no research was found that combined these topics. Therefor in this thesis we attempt to find challenges for innovation management in a large scale tailored agile framework. In order to both find an answer to this question and help ABN AMRO the challenge was approached from two different streams. Firstly, a revelatory single-case study on ABN AMRO’s tailored agile framework served to understand how they tailored agile at such a large scale and what the challenges were. Secondly, through semi structured interviews with 18 ABN AMRO employees, their innovation management efforts were investigated as well as the challenges they experience with it. Both the challenges from a large scale agile perspective and the company-wide innovation management were merged into a set of six new challenges; “governance on innovation in the agile organisation”, “deficiency of exploration skills”, “getting innovation on the backlog”, “Lack of clear guidance & leadership on innovation”, “Dependencies & Limited Autonomy”, and “Organisational and Cultural legacy”. Based on these challenges a new design challenge was posited which was to design a solution that stimulates ownership and awareness amongst idea owners in the grid landscape towards customer problems and needs. This solution needed to provide clear guidance to enable autonomous and successful realisation of these customer centric innovations in the product and system oriented agile organisation. As a solution to the design challenge and in order to help ABN AMRO with their innovation management efforts, the “User Needs Integration Canvas” was created which is an innovation process that focuses on bridging the gap between customer needs and the complex nature of ABN AMRO’s agile organisation. This study further finds that agile methods don’t cover the innovation process in full, and thus extra efforts and support should go towards managing incremental innovation, the front-end of innovation specifically. In addition traditional financial service providers carry cultural legacy, lack innovation legacy and explorative competences. The role of the individual, with their skills, mindset and behaviour are imperative in in the journey towards a nimbler and more innovative financial service provider. There is no shortcut in becoming an innovative company, whilst a large scale agile framework is a step in the right direction, still a lot of time, effort and patience is needed beyond this stepStrategic Product Desig

Development of selective culture media for efficient isolation of Avibacterium paragallinarum from chickens
Infectious coryza (IC) caused by Avibacterium paragallinarum (AvP) is an upper respiratory disease in chickens and incurs a significant economic impact on laying hens. Control of IC requires reliable bacterial isolation, but AvP is a fastidious bacterium, and the currently used methods yield poor isolation. To address this need, we developed selective media for the efficient growth and isolation of AvP. Several basal media supplemented with various growth factors were explored, and Mueller Hinton agar (MHA) supplemented with fetal bovine serum (FBS) plus NAD yielded optimal AvP growth, eliminating the need for nurse bacteria. This medium (named MSN) was further supplemented with vancomycin and crystal violet to produce two selective media, named MSNV and MSCV, respectively, to inhibit commensal Gram-positive bacteria that reside in the upper respiratory tract of chickens. MSNV and MSCV were compared with the standard isolation methods used in veterinary diagnostic laboratories for AvP isolation using samples from IC-positive and IC-negative flocks verified by clinical observation and AvP-specific RT-PCR. The two selective media significantly increased the isolation of AvP from clinical cases (59.4% for MSNV and 46.9% for MSCV) compared to the conventional method (37.7%). In addition, MSNV and MSCV successfully isolated the recently discovered non-pathogenic AvP variants, which were difficult to obtain using the standard methods. Notably, both media drastically reduced background bacteria and improved the purity of AvP isolates. These results demonstrate the efficacy and usefulness of the selective media for AvP isolation, which will enhance IC diagnosis, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and vaccine development. This article is published as Srednik, Mariela E., Mostafa MS Shelkamy, Amro Hashish, Nubia R. An approach to explore new business concepts: A case study of Group Innovation of ABN AMRO
To stay relevant and beat the competition, corporate organisations must innovate disrtupively. Within the financial services industry, it proves hard to remain competitive and stay relevant in a rapidly changing environment. In response to this, Group Innovation was established as the innovation department of ABN AMRO to focus on realizing disruptive innovation. Within Group Innovation the process to generate new business concepts that can eventually be turned into ventures is called the ‘Explore’. However, it was indicated that the quality and quantity of business concept generated by the Explore allow for improvement. Therefore, the following research assignment was formulated: Design a suitable approach to achieve greater quality and quantity in the generation of new business concepts, to help financial services firms innovate disruptively. A case study of Group Innovation of ABN AMRO. Research has been conducted to understand the current Explore state and identify the main challenges. As a response and final design, an approach that consists of anew perspective of the purpose outcome, process and conditions for the Explore is delivered. or the outcome of the Explore, the ‘business concept canvas’ is designed. This canvas can be perceived as a summary of the most important information that a business concept exists of and is based on. It is a blueprint for a venture. The canvas also represents the process that precedes it of which the double diamond approach of Design Thinking forms the foundation. In response to the research assignment, the approach is expected to be suitable since it exists of a semi-structured format that allows for both guidance and clarity as well as that it provides sufficient room, and in fact stimulates, freedom and creativity. This is represented by the business concept canvas, that is confirmed to be implemented at Group Innovation. The canvas steers the Explore team to retrieve the right insights which includes providing a strong foundation for why a certain problem should be solved, as well as that it directs the team to deliver a well-considered business concept that embodies how this problem should be solved. This deliberate way of summarizing a business concept and the process that precedes it, add to why it is expected that the quality of business concepts will moreover increase. In addition, this Explore approach should be implemented systematically and continuously and therefore an implementation strategy to realize the above mentioned is delivered. This strategy exists of four phases that all add up to the objective of ‘continuously generating business concepts that have the ability to disrupt’. This project has been executed as a case study for Group Innovation of ABN AMRO. Nevertheless, the approach presented in this thesis can also be applied by other financial services firms since the approach does not involve any information that is specific and only usable for ABN AMRO.Strategic Product Desig
Metrics for Evaluating Explainable Recommender Systems
Recommender systems aim to support their users by reducing information overload so that they can make better decisions. Recommender systems must be transparent, so users can form mental models about the system’s goals, internal state, and capabilities, that are in line with their actual design. Explanations and transparent behaviour of the system should inspire trust and, ultimately, lead to more persuasive recommendations. Here, explanations convey reasons why a recommendation is given or how the system forms its recommendations. This paper focuses on the question how such claims about effectiveness of explanations can be evaluated. Accordingly, we investigate various models that are used to assess the effects of explanations and recommendations. We discuss objective and subjective measurement and argue that both are needed. We define a set of metrics for measuring the effectiveness of explanations and recommendations. The feasibility of using these metrics is discussed in the context of a specific explainable recommender system in the food and health domain.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Interactive Intelligenc
