Soil fertility and plant diversity in Sabal forest reserve, Borneo.
This study highlights soil fertility status as well as plant structural and compositional makeup in two different forest types after being exposed to different levels of anthropogenic disturbances. The mineral soil chemical analysis (pH, conductance, percentage of carbon and nitrogen, Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, and total and available phosphorus) showed that the concentrations of the chemical elements were lower than the values of published results from other studies in Borneo, suggesting a serious habitat degradation due to prior land-use in the forest reserve. In terms of plant abundance and richness, the logged-over forest fragments were dominated by small trees, whereas the understorey of tree plantations was composed of dense ferns and sedges with very low tree abundance and species richness. This study therefore provides important information on the management of soils and plant diversity in the tropics
Application of Geographical Information System and statistical methods for effective marine fisheries law enforcement in the South China Sea
The trends of intrusion of foreign fishing vessels into Malaysia's fisheries waters in the South China Sea are analysed, the efforts made by the various Malaysia's maritime enforcement agencies to contain them are studied and new approaches for more effective marine fisheries law enforcement are proposed. Failure on the part of maritime enforcement agencies will cost Malaysia heavily in terms of loss to fisheries
Heavy metal concentrations in the soils and shrubs near a metal processing plant in Peninsular Malaysia.
Industrial areas pose pollution risks because the emissions of heavy metals from these sources are normally high. This study was conducted to determine the concentrations of selected heavy metals (zinc, chromium and copper) in the soils and leaves of a shrub species, Melastoma malabathricum around a metal processing plant. Soil samples were taken in three directions away from the source. After soil digestion using the aqua regia method, the total concentration of each heavy metal was determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS). Leaf samples were taken from one plant per location whenever available. Prior to heavy metal determination using AAS, the foliar samples were prepared using the dry ash method.
Results showed that heavy metal concentrations were lowest in the northeast direction, where the wind was blowing for most of the time, but for only a short distance (<600 m) from the source. It is suggested that inputs from other sources, e.g., vehicles and agricultural activities also increased the total heavy metal concentrations in the soils. When compared to general heavy metal concentrations in soils (Alloway, 1990), the zinc and copper concentrations in this study were in the low range (below critical soil total concentration), but chromium concentrations were varied (low to high range). The results for foliar heavy metal concentrations showed no clear pattern between the soil total and plant concentrations for zinc. For chromium and copper, foliar heavy metal concentrations were higher than the soil total concentrations for three locations (5 km northeast, 5 km north and 100 m east). Two locations, however, showed the opposite patterns. When compared to the general foliar heavy metal concentrations (Alloway, 1990), foliar zinc concentrations in the study were below the critical concentration as did most of the foliar copper concentrations, but foliar chromium concentrations were higher than the critical concentrations where toxicity effects might have been likely. But the sampled M. malabathricum plants did not show any visible sign of foliar injury. Nonetheless, M. malabathricum showed a capacity for Cr, Cu and Zn uptake regardless of the soil total concentrations of these heavy metals. This study provides important information on the state of heavy metal pollution in lowland soils and plants of Peninsular Malaysia
Analysing long-term landscape changes in a Bornean forest reserve using aerial photographs.
Aerial photographs have been widely used to monitor large-scale spatial changes taking place over long periods. In this study, the types and trajectories of landscape changes in Sabal Forest Reserve in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, Borneo over a period of 26 years (1972-1998) were investigated using 1:25,000 scale aerial photographs andground surveys. The aerial photographs showed typical land use features such as forest clearing, fallows, roads, power line easements and houses, all of which could be easily identified and mapped by stereoviewing. Further analysis revealedthat logging activities, which started in the 1970s continued to increase through to the 1990s. In comparison, shiftingcultivation began earlier and was seen to be widespread but was banned in Sabal by 1984, thus reflecting the conflict of interest between two major land users: shifting cultivators and foresters. Reforestation projects carried out after the banappeared successful in increasing tree cover in former shifting cultivation areas. In conclusion this study has provided aninteresting case study about how people in a remote area in Sarawak shaped their forested landscape
Heavy metal concentrations in an important mangrove species, Sonneratia caseolaris, in Peninsular Malaysia.
Mangrove forests in Peninsular Malaysia are increasingly threatened by heavy metal pollution. Due to their unique
location, mangroves receive heavy metal pollution from upstream areas and the sea. However, little is known about the capacity of mangrove plants to take up and store heavy metals. In this study, the concentrations of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in an important mangrove species, Sonneratia caseolaris, were measured. It was found that the total concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the sediments were below the general critical soil concentrations. However, the total concentrations of Cu and Pb in both the roots and leaves of Sonneratia caseolaris exceeded the general normal upper range in plants. This study has therefore shown the potential of Sonneratia caseolaris as a phytoremediation species for selected heavy metals in Malaysian mangrove ecosystem

The responses of secondary forest tree seedings to soil enrichment in Peninsular Malaysia : an experimental approach
Secondary forests are gaining prominence in tropical landscapes, but in areas adjacent to agricultural land the mix of species found in them is likely to be influenced by high rates of fertilisation and nutrient run-off. We conducted a pot experiment on three secondary forest species, Glochidion obscurum, Lagerstroemia speciosa and Vitex pinnata, to ascertain their response to nutrient addition. We used three treatments, (1) control (no fertilizer addition); (2) addition of 1 g of rock phosphate; and (3) addition of 1 g NPK, and found that G. obscurum and L. speciosa increased their growth when levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were
increased, indicating evolutionary adaptation to use a high resource strategy. However, V. pinnata did not show the same pattern. It is, therefore, possible that on-going fertilization of low-lying secondary forests will produce growing conditions that lead to the reduction of non
responsive species such as V. pinnata and favour others, such as G. obscurum and L. speciosa, at least in the early stages of forest succession
