No full textIn this talk I plan to present realization of 2D topological superconductors (TSC) with Helical
Pairing [1,2] based on a Bi-based topological material and a route to SUSY critical point and
then present our experimental discovery (and theory of TaAs) of Weyl semimetal state with
Fermi arc surface states in TaAs and other related systems [3-5]. I discuss the progress in

Sustainable development from an Islamic Perspective: meaning implications and policy concerns
No full textAbstract This paper examines the debate on the meaning of sustainable development and the policy implications of different approaches from an Islamic perspective. It integrates mainstream and Islamic positions on the subject and argues that to whatever definition of sustainable development one might subscribe, eventually, each ends in an environmental concern. This paper attempts to show that the continuous increase in output of goods and services worldwide imposes a trade off between material prosperity on the one hand and pollution poisoning of human beings on the other. It engages in the intensifying debate about how the benefits of the former and the negative impact of the latter could be more evenly distributed. The paper takes inspiration from the maqasid (objectives) of the Shari’ah and verses of the holy Qur’an that indicate a way out of this impasse. It holds that the worldview differences of secularism and Islam are the basic reason of divergence between their approaches to development. It argues that the Islamic approach is more agreeable to environmental protection and concludes that issues surrounding sustainable development have moral, ethical, social, and political complexities and that economics or economists alone cannot resolve the problem.Sustainable; Development; Islamic perspective; Policy concerns
The impact of CFO gender on bank loan contracting
No full textMotivated by recent studies that show female CFOs are more risk averse than male CFOs when making various corporate decisions, we examine whether banks take into consideration the gender of CFOs when pricing bank loans. We find that in our sample, firms under the control of female CFOs on average enjoy about 11% lower bank loan price than firms under the control of male CFOs. In addition, loans given to female CFO-led companies have longer maturities and are less likely to be required to provide collateral than loans given to male CFO led companies. Our results are robust to a series of robustness tests, such as a firm and year-fixed effect regression, a Heckman two-stage self selection model, a propensity score match method and a differences-in-differences approach. Overall, our results suggest that banks tend to recognize the role of female CFOs in providing more reliable accounting information ex ante and reducing default risk ex post, and grant firms with female CFOs lower loan price and more favourable contract terms.CFOs; gender; accounting information; bank loans

Lyman break galaxies and the star formation rate of the Universe at z ~ 6
No full textWe determine the space density of UV-luminous starburst galaxies at z≈ 6 using deep HST ACS SDSS-i′ (F775W) and SDSS-z′ (F850LP) and VLT ISAAC J and Ks band imaging of the Chandra Deep Field South. We find eight galaxies and one star with (i′−z′) > 1.5 to a depth of z′AB= 25.6 (an 8σ detection in each of the 3 available ACS epochs). This corresponds to an unobscured star formation rate of ≈15 h−270 M⊙ yr−1 at z= 5.9, equivalent to L* for the Lyman-break population at z= 3–4 (ΩΛ= 0.7, ΩM= 0.3). We are sensitive to star-forming galaxies at 5.6 ≲z≲ 7.0 with an effective comoving volume of ≈1.8 × 105h−370 Mpc3 after accounting for incompleteness at the higher redshifts due to luminosity bias. This volume should encompass the primeval subgalactic-scale fragments of the progenitors of about a thousand L* galaxies at the current epoch. We determine a volume-averaged global star formation rate of (6.7 ± 2.7) × 10−4h70 M⊙ yr−1 Mpc−3 at z∼ 6 from rest-frame UV selected starbursts at the bright end of the luminosity function: this is a lower limit because of dust obscuration and galaxies below our sensitivity limit. This measurement shows that at z∼ 6 the star formation density at the bright end is a factor of ∼6 times less than that determined by Steidel et al. for a comparable sample of UV-selected galaxies at z= 3–4, and so extends our knowledge of the star formation history of the Universe to earlier times than previous work and into the epoch where reionization may have occurred
Transition to turbulence in a qblique shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction at M=15
No full textDirect numerical simulations are carried out for different forcing techniques to trigger transition during the interaction between an oblique shock-wave and a laminar boundary-layer at M = 1.5. Three forcing methods are used: a) forcing of oblique unstable modes, whose shape and behaviour are determined by the local linear stability theory, b) broadband free-stream acoustic disturbances, and c) a cold plasma flow control device. While the oblique-mode breakdown is dominant for low-amplitude forcing, long streaky structures drive the transition process in a high-amplitude disturbance environment. LES are also performed on the experimental setup by the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ITAM) from Novosibirsk State University with cold plasma actuation. As well as the disturbance type, the effect of Reynolds number and forcing amplitude will be investigated

yeni anlamlar kazanması kaçınılmazdır. Yaşam boyu öğrenme yaklaşımı, eğitime
bütüncül bir dünya görüşü, çeşitliliğe saygı, özerklik ve öz farkındalığı destekleme,
öğrenme stratejilerinin kullanımını özendirme, bunların yardımıyla birden çok yabancı
dil öğrenmeye doğru rehberlik etme, bu bağlamda eğitim uygulamalarını değerlendirme
gibi yeni görüşler getirerek yeni açılımlar sağlayabilir. Yabancı dil eğitimi
bireylere kendi varlıklarını diğer varlıklarla karşılaştırma olanağını vermektedir,
bu da daha fazla hoşgörü ve saygıyı beraberinde getirmektedir; bu şekilde yeni bir
dünyanın ortaya çıkmasını mümkün kılabilir. Bu çalışma, yaşam boyu sürecek bir
yabancı dil öğretimi bağlamında yabancı dil öğrenme stratejilerinin Milli Eğitim
Bakanlığı tarafından kullanılan yabancı dil olarak İngilizce ders kitaplarında nasıl ve
ne ölçüde kullanıldığını örneklemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu makale çerçevesinde alanda
kabul gören yabancı dil öğrenme strateji sınıflandırmalarından yararlanılarak bir
çerçeve oluşturulmuştur. Bu çerçeve ile Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı okullarında yaygınca
kullanılan dördüncü sınıftan onuncu sınıfa kadar olan yedi kitap seçilmiş ve incelenmiştir.
İnceleme sonucunda en çok bilişsel stratejilerin kullanıldığı etkinliklerin en
az da üstbilişsel stratejilerin kullanıldığı etkinliklerin kullanıldığı bulgulamıştır. Bu
sonuçlar çerçevesinde sözü edilen kitaplarla eğitim gören öğrencilerin yaşam boyu
sürecek bir yabancı dil öğrenimine hazır olup olmadıkları, özellikle de stratejilerin
kitaplarda örtük olarak verilmesi, vurgulanmaması ve kullanılan stratejilerin de
çeşitlilik arz etmemesi bağlamında tartışmalı hale gelmektedir
