Fred harvey purchases of Indian items over the years and continuing interest in handicrafts played an important part in helping to preserve the ancient skills and make them known to the American public. Fred Harvey
Portrait of Fred Harvey, founder. Back of photograph reads " Fred Harvey, founder of the present Harvey organization, 'made the desert blossom with beefsteak,' according to journalists of his day. An English immigrant, he came to the United States in 1850 at the age of 15 and started his business career in restaurants in New York, New Orleans and St. Louis. The first of his 'Harvey Houses', at which Satna Fe Railway passengers detrained for meals before the day of dining car service, was opened in 1876. The business he founded has been carried on since his death in 1901 by his sons and grandsons. (Fred Harvey Public Relations Dept., 80 E. Jackson Blvd., Chicago 4, Ill.).

Fred Harvey later fostered the arts and craft of the Hopi Indians of Arizona who worked in a similar maner in another Harvey Indian Building, Hopi House, on the South Rim of Grand Canyon. Fred Harvey Restaurant

AND "The Fred Harvey organization was born on the second floor of this old Santa Fe Railway depot at Topeka, Kansas, where the founder opened the first of his famed restaurants that catered originally to railway passengers, primarily. From there, the Harvey Houses went west with the Santa Fe Railway into New Mexico where the organiation has maintained closest ties for well over half a century. As trasnportation methods changed, the old Harvey Houes at which passengers detrained for meals gave way to dining cars and Fred harvey took over supervision of dining car service for the Santa Fe Railway, a Harvey operation that is now carried on over more than 13,000 miles of Santa Fe Railway track. Thomas E. Harvey Oral History Interview
Thomas E. Harvey was a member of the 11th Armored Division, which liberated Mauthausen on May 6, 1945. Harvey and his unit spent a few hours in the camp, witnessing bodies, the crematoria, and some emaciated survivors; an engineering battalion was right behind them to bury the remains. Harvey also helped liberate several thousand prisoners on a death march near Cham, Germany

Ciò che li accomuna è una serrata riflessione volta a ridefinire l’impresa conoscitiva della sociologia, anche se ciò non esclude importanti implicazioni per la psicologia, l’antropologia culturale e la linguistica. Quello dello studioso newyorkese costituisce infatti uno dei più approfonditi tentativi di descrizione di cosa voglia dire fare sociologia, una questione che spesso viene ingiustamente accantonata.
