    I AccuseWolfgang Liebeneiner's Ich kalg an (I Accuse) is a lyrical treatment of a controversial topic - mercy killing - featuring sensitive performances by Paul Hartmann as a physician who administers a fatal overdose to his incurably ill wife; Heidemarie Hatheyer as the wife who begs his to release her from her suffering; and Mathias Wieman as the doctor who refuses her request. Gentle, loving, moving, the picture promotes assisted suicide, a quagmire as conflicted in the twenty-first century as it was in 1941. The genesis of the film came from a recomendation by Professor Karl Brandt, a member of the Fuhrer's entourage, that a picture be produced to persuade the public to accept the policy of euthanasia. The films's virtually subliminal message is that the state must assume responsibility for the involuntarily liquidation of the mentally handicapped. For decades thereafter, German physicians remembered its impact and the debates it stimulated about the morality of medical killing. Reports made by the Sicherheitsdienst (the SS Security Service or SD) following the picture's release on 29 August 1941 indicate that the film was favorably received, the majority of Germans, as well as most physicians, accepting its argument. Starting in 1939, victims were registered at Hereditary Health Courts, examined, and then transported to specially selected clinics where their lives were terminated. Does Ich klage an possess demonic qualities? It does not. It is a respectable, artistic triumph that was used to promote a program that went far beyond anything proposed in thepicture.     Improved A-phase Detection of Cyclic Alternating Pattern Using Deep Learning

    In recent years, machine learning algorithms have become increasingly popular for analyzing biomedical signals. This includes the detection of cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) in electroencephalography recordings. Here, we investigate the performance gain of a recurrent neural network (RNN) for CAP scoring in comparison to standard classification methods. We analyzed 15 recordings (n1-n15) from the publicly available CAP Sleep Database on Physionet to evaluate each machine learning method. A long short-term memory (LSTM) network increases the accuracy and F1-score by 0.5-3.5% and 3.5-8%, respectively, compared to commonly used classification algorithms such as linear discriminant analysis, k-nearest neighbour or feed-forward neural network. Our results show that by using a LSTM classifier the quantity of correctly detected CAP events can be increased and the number of wrongly classified periods reduced. RNNs significantly improve the precision in CAP scoring by taking advantage of available information from the past for deciding current classification.Simon Hartmann and Mathias Baumer

    Many past financial episodes have highlighted the importance of liquidity for the well-functioning of the financial system. The recent global financial crisis which was unprecedented in scale and scope is no different. A well known reason for the severity of the crisis lies in the propagation of original shock that is compounded by extreme bank funding fragility, forcing fire sales across all markets. The funding of some banks has shifted towards a greater dependence on the capital markets. These wholesale funding sources such as commercial papers, repurchase agreements, and other commercial money market instruments, as the recent financial crisis illustrates, tend to be more volatile than traditional retail deposits and may pose additional challenges to liquidity risk management which is important for the long-run viability of a bank.

    Understanding students’ historical understanding is a complex and challenging endeavour, for history teachers as well as for researchers from diverse fields. Since historical situations contain interpersonal and social issues that happened in the past, not only history educators are interested in how students understand them. Also, psychologists and educational scientists aim to gain knowledge how students deal with interpersonal issues in the context of history. The present book shows in which way historical understanding can be viewed as interpersonal understanding and gives indications for the limitation of an interpersonal approach regarding historical situations. The different contributions of this volume give insight into an interdisciplinary discussion about how the fields of social and historical thinking are interrelated with respect to educational issues and challenges. This book confirms the impression of an increase in empirical work in the domain of history education. The authors present empirical approaches from the fields of history education, developmental psychology and educational science using different theoretical and methodical means and thus contribute to a larger picture of what teaching and learning history at school is about

    Causality of cortical and cardiovascular activity during cyclic alternating pattern in non-rapid eye movement sleep

    The dynamic interplay between central and autonomic nervous system activities plays a pivotal role in orchestrating sleep. Macrostructural changes such as sleep-stage transitions or phasic, brief cortical events elicit fluctuations in neural outflow to the cardiovascular system, but the causal relationships between cortical and cardiovascular activities underpinning the microstructure of sleep are largely unknown. Here, we investigate cortical–cardiovascular interactions during the cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) of non-rapid eye movement sleep in a diverse set of overnight polysomnograms. We determine the Granger causality in both 507 CAP and 507 matched non-CAP sequences to assess the causal relationships between electroencephalography (EEG) frequency bands and respiratory and cardiovascular variables (heart period, respiratory period, pulse arrival time and pulse wave amplitude) during CAP. We observe a significantly stronger influence of delta activity on vascular variables during CAP sequences where slow, low-amplitude EEG activation phases (A1) dominate than during non-CAP sequences. We also show that rapid, high-amplitude EEG activation phases (A3) provoke a more pronounced change in autonomic activity than A1 and A2 phases. Our analysis provides the first evidence on the causal interplay between cortical and cardiovascular activities during CAP. Granger causality analysis may also be useful for probing the level of decoupling in sleep disorders.Simon Hartmann, Raffaele Ferri, Oliviero Bruni and Mathias Baumer
