    This collection consists of microfilm copies of a handwritten journal belonging to William Hart McCorkle (1821-1904). William Hart McCorkle was a Confederate veteran in the American Civil War and served in the 12th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry, Company A, The Palmer Guards. He was also a County Probate Judge and a local businessman based in York, SC. The journal details events and persons in York County and includes entries relating to the lynching of 2 Negroes, a relief effort for Johnstown, P.A., flood victims, reunion of the 17th South Carolina Volunteers, electric lights in homes, local marriages and deaths, lists of local officials, cotton prices, and national events such as the sinking of the U.S.S, Maine, death of Queen Victoria and President McKinley. *The collection consists of microfilm copies of the originals housed at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.https://digitalcommons.winthrop.edu/manuscriptcollection_findingaids/1500/thumbnail.jp

    Cryogenic CMOS Characterization for Quantum Computer Applications

    Device characteristics at cryogenic temperatures can deviate significantly from their room temperature behaviour. For example, the threshold voltage of a MOSFET can increase by more than 100 mV when it is cooled down to 4.2 K, as shown in this thesis. If a designer is not aware of this shift, circuits that work as intended at room temperature can potentially fail at deep-cryogenic temperatures due to the resulting change in bias points, or even due to devices that are unable to be switched on.Device characterization is an indispensable step in building models for circuit designers. Foundries characterize their technology over the standard military temperature range (-55 to 125 ◦C) and generally do not supply compact models (yet) that are valid at deep-cryogenic temperatures. Therefore, designers of cryogenic circuits have to rely on back-of-the-envelope calculations and must build in margins to allow for parameter shifts, as they are unable to fully simulate their designs with use of the existing electrical simulators. These margins cause circuits to most likely occupy more silicon area than required and thus operate at lower speeds and with increased power dissipation compared to an optimized circuit. As the power budget is severely limited, this is a very important challenge of (current) cryogenic circuit design. Worst of all, circuits deviating from the stringent specifications for quantum control can lead to lower fidelity of quantum operations.In order to overcome these challenges, cryogenic device characterization needs to be carried out, to investigate and capture the impact of low temperatures on different device parameters. A convenient temperature to operate cryogenic circuits at, is that of liquid helium, which lies around 4.2 K. Therefore, most characterizations are carried-out at this temperature. Effort was already devoted to characterization and modeling at these temperatures by other groups, however, not much attention was spent on the impact of these extreme temperatures on device matching and self-heating in advanced processes.The work presented in this thesis, therefore, focuses on the design and characterization of test chips in an advanced 40-nm process, and the subsequent modeling of device mismatch and self-heating at cryogenic temperatures.QCD/Sebastiano La

    Simple drag prediction strategies for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle’s hull shape

    The range of an AUV is dictated by its finite energy source and minimising the energy consumption is required to maximise its endurance. One option to extend the endurance is by obtaining the optimum hydrodynamic hull shape with balancing the trade-off between computational cost and fluid dynamic fidelity. An AUV hull form has been optimised to obtain low resistance hull. Hydrodynamic optimisation of hull form has been carried out by employing five parametric geometry models with a streamlined constraint. Three Genetic Algorithm optimisation procedures are applied by three simple drag predictions which are based on the potential flow method.     The actual task of Russian state studies and jurisprudence remains the opposition to the ideological and theoretical constructions of Russian classical anarchism. Purpose: to establish the most significant features and disadvantages of P.A. Kropotkin’s interpretation of the correlation of state and law on the example of Medieval Europe. When writing the article, the author applies interdisciplinary and class approaches. General scientific and specific scientific methods are used: historical, problem-theoretical, formal-logical, textual. Materials: monuments of law, other historical sources, foreign and national historiography. The analysis shows that P.A. Kropotkin’s works are characterised not only by a pronounced anti-exploitation pathos, but also by an equally pronounced tendentiousness. Results: aprioriism, anti-statism and antilegism, radical localism, Eurocentrism, diffusionism, cyclism and catastrophism, clothed in the form of postulates, predetermined P.A. Kropotkin’s one-sided interpretations of the interaction of the medieval European state with positive and customary law. In the first case, it took a purely causative form, and in the second, it was predominantly conflictual. These are the key flaws of P.A. Kropotkin’s correlation concept

    Met als doel het verkrijgen van relevante parameters voor, danwel benodigde aanpassingen op, het eerder opgestelde dimensioneringsmodel voor asfaltbekledingen onder golfbelasting te verkrijgen, zijn gemeten tijdreeksen van rek en belasting geanallyseerd. Geconcludeerd is dat voor de dimensionering op golfklappen de beschrijving van de relevante parameters, na een uitgewerkte correctie op de ondergrondstijfheid compleet is. In de gemeten reksignalen bevindt zich echter ook een traag cyclische component waarvan vooralsnog moet worden aangenomen dat hij voor de dimensionering van asfaltbekledingen relevant is. Deze component, waarschijnlijk samenhangend met plastische vervormingen, is niet eenvoudig te beschrijven, zodat een complete dimensioneringsmethode met betrekking tot de volledige golfbelasting nog niet is te geven.TAW A

    Integrated Cryo-CMOS Temperature Sensors for Quantum Control ICs

    This work presents an experimental study of different components (resistors, diodes, transistors) in a standard 40-nm bulk CMOS process for their suitability as integrated cryogenic temperature sensors down to a temperature of 4.2K. It was found that most devices can be employed as sensors down to temperatures of approximately 50K, below which non-ideal effects such as non-linear behaviour and decreased sensitivity start to dominate. The Dynamic-Threshold MOS (DTMOS) was found to be a very promising candidate for its linearity, low forward-voltage-drop and sensitivity down to 8K. Moreover, as previous research indicated that cryogenic self-heating raises the local chip temperature to tens of Kelvins already at moderate power levels, the aforementioned sensing limitations at very low temperatures are expected to be of less importance in realistic applications. The results presented in this work contribute to the further integration of classical cryo-CMOS control electronics and qubits, towards a fully scalable quantum computer.     BAG-1 expression in human breast cancer: interrelationship between BAG-1 RNA, protein, HSC70 expression and clinico-pathological data

    BAG-1 (BCL-2 athanogene-1), a multifunctional protein which associates with steroid hormone receptors (including the oestrogen receptor) and the anti-apoptotic BCL-2 protein, regulates steroid hormone-dependent transcription and apoptosis. Direct interaction with 70 kD heat-shock proteins, HSC70 and HSP70, may mediate the diverse functions of BAG-1. Immunohistochemistry was used to examine the expression of BAG-1 and HSC70 in 160 cases of invasive breast cancer. BAG-1 was expressed in 92% of cases; most tumours exhibited cytoplasmic BAG-1, while a smaller proportion also had nuclear immunostaining. There was a significant inverse correlation between histological grade and nuclear BAG-1 expression, with higher-grade tumours tending to have reduced nuclear BAG-1 expression, but there was no association with cytoplasmic BAG-1. There was also no significant correlation between nuclear or cytoplasmic BAG-1 expression and oestrogen receptor positivity. Since BAG-1 may be influenced by hormonal background, the relationship between grade and oestrogen receptor was examined separately in pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women. The statistically significant correlation between nuclear BAG-1 expression and low tumour grade was strong in pre-menopausal, but not apparent in post-menopausal women. A statistically significant correlation was observed between cytoplasmic, but not nuclear, BAG-1 expression and oestrogen receptor status in pre-menopausal, but not post-menopausal, women. There was no correlation between BAG-1 protein expression and RNA, suggesting that important post-transcriptional mechanisms control BAG-1 expression in vivo. HSC70 was also detected in the majority (97%) of cases, although expression was not correlated with BAG-1 levels, oestrogen receptor status or tumour grade. Overall survival in cases with high levels of nuclear BAG-1 expression was improved, though not significantly. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that BAG-1 plays an important but variable role in breast cancers developing in pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women

    Flow-induced gate vibrations: Prevention of sef-excitation computation of dynamic gate behaviour and the use of models

    The objective of this study is to develop design criteria for the dynamic behaviour of gates and valves. To this end, a resume of existing theories is given as well as an extended analysis of the added water mass, hydrodynamic rigidity and damping (also negative damping or self-excitation) and excitation by turbulent flow. New computation methods are presented for self-exciting vibrations: The ensuing introduction of an instability indicator permits the prediction of such vibrations in the design phase. Methods are described to calculate the added water mass and water damping in flowing water. Also treated are the instability of overflowing and falling water nappes, the response of a mass-spring system to noise excitation by turbulence, and the technique of hydroelastic models.
