Epidermal Growth Factor Restores Normal Levels of Myosin Expression in Submandibular Salivary Glands of Rats Treated With Botulinum Toxin
Botulinum toxin (BTX) has a number of cosmetic, medical and dental applications. One of the dental applications of BTX is treatment of excessive salivation. Local BTX injection into salivary glands has an effect on the histology, and integrity of the tissues. Myosins are contractile proteins that are highly expressed in myoepithelial cells (MECs) and present around salivary gland ducts and acini to help maintain normal salivary flow. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of BTX injections on the submandibular salivary glands of adult female Albino rats, when administered solely or in conjunction with Epidermal growth factor (EGF) through immunohistochemical localization of myosin in the parenchyma of the gland. Sixty rats were used in this study and were equally divided into control (saline) group, BTX group and EGF + BTX group (Combined treatment). The results obtained from this study showed that myosin expression in submandibular salivary glands of rats significantly decreased after a single subcutaneous injection of 2.5 units of BTX in 0.1ml saline. However, daily intraperitoneal injections of EGF with a dose of 10 µg/Kg body weight restored normal levels of myosin expression, as well as normal integrity and function of submandibular salivary glands. Further confirmation of the above findings is recommended through immunohistochemical localization of E-cadherin as well as ultrastructural examination of submandibular salivary glands treated with BTX and EGF.Full Tex
Management of Erythema Multiforme Secondary to Herpes simplex by Systemic Acyclovir and Topical Corticosteroid: A Case Report
ABSTRACT Erythema multiforme (EM) is mucocutaneous disease which has oral manifestations. It is clinically characterized by a "minor" form and a "major" form. It presents a diagnostic dilemma because the oral cavity has the ability to produce varied manifestations. Primary attacks of oral EM are confined to the oral mucosa but the subsequent attacks can produce more severe forms of EM involving the skin. Hence, it is important to identify and distinguish them from other ulcerative disorders involving oral cavity for early management. Prevalence of Dental Caries in relation to Body Mass Index, Daily Sugar Intake, and Oral Hygiene Status in 12-Year-Old School Children in Mathura City: A Pilot Study
Aim. To correlate the prevalence of dental caries to body mass index, daily sugar intake, and oral hygiene status of 12-year-old school children of Mathura city. Material and Methods. The study design was cross-sectional and included 100 school children aged 12 years (n=50 boys and n=50 girls) who were randomly selected from two schools based upon inclusion and exclusion criteria. Body weight/height was recorded and BMI was calculated and plotted on CDC-BMI for age growth charts/curves for boys and girls to obtain percentile ranking. Dental caries was recorded using WHO criteria. Oral hygiene status of the study subjects was assessed using oral hygiene index-simplified. Data regarding the daily sugar intake was recorded using 24-hour recall diet frequency chart. The data obtained was analysed using SPSS version 11.5 for windows. Result. Only 27 subjects were affected by caries. The mean DMFT/dmft was 0.37 ± 0.79 and 0.12 ± 0.60, respectively. Statistical analysis by means of a logistic regression model revealed that only oral hygiene status had a significant effect on caries prevalence (OR = 5.061, P=0.004), whereas daily sugar intake and body mass index had no significant effect. Conclusion. From the analysis, it was concluded that oral hygiene status had a significant effect on caries prevalence of 12-year-old school children of Mathura city
Assessment of effect of anti-platelet therapy on minor surgical procedures
Background: Antiplatelet therapy is to treat thromboembolic disorders, but it causes hemorrhages. Aspirin is the drug in regular practice. The present study was conducted to assess the effect of anti- platelet therapy on minor surgical procedures. Materials & Methods: 80 patients selected for mandibular third molar extraction of both genders were randomly divided into 2 groups of 40 each. In Group I, patients on antiplatelets drugs (75 mg of aspirin/ 75 mg clopidogrel) were enrolled and in group II, patients who discontinued the drug before 5 days of extraction of mandibular third molar were enrolled. Bleeding was observed after 1 and 24 hours. Results: Group I had 24 males and 16 females and group II had 14 males and 26 females. The mean bleeding time in group I was 75.21 seconds and in group II was 75.14 seconds. The mean duration of surgery in group I was 54.2 months and in group II was 52.1 months. After 1 hour, no bleeding was seen in 38 in group I and 39 in group II and ooze in 2 in group I and 1 in group II
Pyogenic Granuloma: A Diagnostic Dilemma
Pyogenic granuloma (lobular capillary hemangioma) is a common acquired vascular lesion of the skin and mucous membranes in the pediatric age group. Pyogenic granuloma and hemangioma of oral cavity are well- known benign lesions. The clinical diagnosis and differentiation of these lesions is at times difficult. The purpose of this article is to report an unusual case of benign tumor occuring on hard palate which was clinically diagnosed as pyogenic granuloma and hiatopathologically as capillary hemangioma.</jats:p
An Update on Precancerous Lesions of Oral Cavity
Oral cancer is the most common head and neck cancer, found in 270,000 patients annually worldwide. Some cancers develop from precancerous lesions; however, there is no definitive clinico pathological factor or biomarker that reliably enables malignant transformation to be predicted in an individual patient. Early detection and early treatment of oral cancer are important for improving the survival rate of patients; prevention of oral cancer will clearly contribute most to decreasing its death rate. So correct diagnosis and timely treatment of premalignant lesions with high risk of malignant transformation may help to prevent malignant transformation.</jats:p
Follicular Ameloblastoma with Emphasis on Correlation Between Pathological Findings and Clinical Behaviour
Ameloblastoma constitutes a homogenous group of neoplasm with mandible as a common site of occurrence in head and neck region. Histologically it appears in different patterns with follicular and plexiform as common one. We hereby report a case of 47 year old male with emphasis on correlation between histological findings and clinical behaviour of lesion. Regular follow up of patients should be carried out to predict the behaviour of this tumour and to ascertain histopathologic correlation to biological behaviour of the tumour.</jats:p

This paper will discuss the need for computer forensics and application of technologies to be practiced in an effective and legal way, formalize basic technical issues, and point to references for further reading.
