Heartwood amount, ring width and Austrian pine wood density from stands undergoing different treatments
The wood properties (heartwood amount, ring width, portion of latewood and oven-dry density) of Pinus nigra Arn. salzmanni var. pyrenaica were investigated on 60 sample trees from thinnings in a region of Catalonia/Spain (see Hapla and Kornhoff, Table 1). The thinnings from stands with lower stocking density offer better utilization possibilities because of their larger dimension. Furthermore the wider spaced grown trees show no relevant quality decline of the inner wood properties but a higher portion of sawlog stem sections in comparison with the thinning trees from stands with higher stocking density
Colour measurements and gluability investigation on red heart beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.)
At present the light-coloured and workable beech wood is in great demand, especially in the furniture industry sector. Against that the red heartwood will be considered above all as inferior for higher value utilisation purposes. Untreated red heartwood from beech loses the colour intensity and will bleach out or become of grey discoloration gradually. While beech wood can be used only in the interior, the end users take much care about the colour stability of the product surface. That is why the colour stabilisation of differently treated beech red heartwood against the UV-Iight effect is an important field of research. In the frame of the investigation on the UV-Iight durability of red heartwood, the colour alteration in untreated red heartwood after different UV-irradiation cycles was measured in the CIE L a b colour coordinate system. Further measurements were done on beech wood samples after different surface treatments. But important questions also refer to the gluability of red heartwood. That is why the gluability of red heartwood solid wood was further investigation objective. In the investigation on the gluing behaviour of red heartwood the results were compared with those done on white beech wood. In addition, the influence of steaming on the stability after gluing has been investigated as well

Assortment structure of Austrian pine stands undergoing different treatments
Subject The quality of Pinus nigra Arn. salzmanni var. pyrenaica round timber was investigated on 120 sample trees from 4 stands with different stocking density in a region of Catalonia/Spain. The age of the sample trees lay between 58 and 68 years. The following morphological tree parameters (hight, crown length and volume, crown projection area) and round timber quality grading criteria (stem volume and taper, spiral grain, crookedness, eccentricity, number and quality of branches, branch diameters and defects) were measured. The results of the crown morphological parameters present significantly higher values in wide spaced stands than in stands with higher stocking density. The round timber quality classification followed the European rule prEN 1927-2 (1995). Significantly more timber volume of the faster grown trees could be classified into quality class B, which allows better utilization as sawn timber. Narrow spaced grown trees showed a higher proportion of pulping wood assortment

Comparison of beech log quality classes obtained after grading using the HKS (Lower Saxony) and the European standard EN 1316-1 - A critical analysis
During the last few years there has been a clear increase of the international trading of beech round wood. At the same time, apart of the turbulent Asia market a great increase of beech round wood exports into countries of the European Union is recorded. Against the background of this development it was of great interest to examine the European grading standard EN 1316-1 for beech round wood and compare it critically with the German grading rules for Lower Saxony. In the frame of a grading investigation 42 large dimensioned beech trees containing red heartwood (ca. 163 m(3) stem volume b.b.) of the forest district Bramwald were put at disposal as investigation material. The investigation results showed clearly that the use of the European standard EN 1316-1 in forestry practice proved to be problematic. Its use led to a substantial poorer quality classes distribution of the graded beech round wood compared to the use of the HKS including the grading rules of Lower Saxony (see Fig. 5). A monetary calculation comparison based on the same topical wood prices of beech round wood led to a higher net product for the forest management after using the HKS-grading. Correspondingly there would have been 20% less proceeds from the according to EU-standard graded beech round wood. The effects of the grade-relevant growth characteristics on the quality assessment of the beech round wood are critically discussed comparing both standards. All in all the presented version of EN 1316-1 for beech round wood will hardly assert in the forestry practice. Therefore finally some change proposals for the practical use of the EN 13161 for beech round wood were worked out with regard to the measuring methods at the recording of the grade-relevant growth characteristics (see Tab. 3). In future a customer- respectively wood product-orientated round wood grading should assert at least concerning the sale of the high value beech timber, which is more and more accepted on the part of forest management and wood industry
