'En uproblematisk, stort set afsluttet lille affære' - En nærsproglig analyse af en novelle af Jan Sonnergaard
This study examines how an unreliable narrator affects an overall interpretation of fiction. The short story, “Historie om en ung mand, der tvinges ind I et klædeskab, fordi et ubehageligt væsen bryder ind i hans kærlighedsliv på de mest umulige og ubelejlige tidspunkter”, from the collection of short stories Radiator by the Danish author Jan Sonnergaard, is the case of this study. Peripeteic texts or P-texts by Simon Uffe Borchmann and the cooperative principle, implicatures and the pragmatics of language by Paul Grice are the theoretical bases of this study. Moreover, the concept of the unreliable narrator by the literary theorist Wayne C. Booth as well as the redevelopment of this concept by James Phelan and Mary Patricia Martin’s will be introduced and applied. The analysis of the short story, which is structured after Borchmann’s peripeteic process of understanding, discovers that the unreliability of the narrator plays a vital role in the process of interpretation, which can be said about fiction in general. When it comes to the role of the different characters and how they are linked, the first reliable interpretation differs greatly from the second suspicious interpretation. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss the possibility of a symptom reading of the unreliability of the narrator, as well as the role in which the interpretation of the reader plays on the exposing of unreliability. This study examines how an unreliable narrator affects an overall interpretation of fiction. Hjemsted - Hjemmet i dannelses- og udviklingsromanen
The focus in this thesis is ‘the home’, as a place and an existential term of human living, in the Bildungsroman and the novel of development genres within Danish literature. The literary works of the thesis are Meïr Aron Goldschmidt’s Hjemløs (direct translation: Homeless) and Henrik Pontoppidan’s Lykke-Per (Lucky Per). The main focus of this thesis is to examine the home as a genre marker to differentiate between the Bildungsroman and the novel of development genres. This thesis discusses why the home is not included in previous research and how a study of the home can be used in the understanding of the works and the genres. Through an analysis of the two mentioned works, the thesis examines the home as a literary place, and how it influences the characters’ cultural formation and development. To do so, the analysis applies theories about the concept of the place and theories of what a home is. The analysis leads to a literary discussion of the two works and of how literary tendencies like ‘biedermeier’ and realism affect the representation of the home. The thesis concludes that the home can be used as a genre marker to differentiate between the Bildungsroman and the novel of development. The home in the Bildungsroman is a utopian, religious and metaphysical home, whilst the home in the novel of development is localised, religiously conflictive and existential. In both genres, the home has a large influence on how the characters develop and find their way through life.<br/
Conditions in Danish literature - Before, during, and after Darwin
This project investigates the effects on Danish literature in the wake of the release of Charles Robert Darwin’s On the Origins of Species by Means of Natural Selection in 1859. At the time of the re-lease, literature and culture in general were going through a series of changes which were strongly related to the scene of natural science which was in bloom throughout these years. Literature went from the idealistic thoughts of romanticism to the more objective and cynical perspectives of natu-ralism and the modern breakthrough.Starting out by focusing on the cultural scene of Europe for a larger perspective and narrowing it down to Denmark which is the main focus of this project, we aim to put attention to a broad variety of tendencies and general understandings of life in time periods ranging from pre-romanticism to shortly after the modern breakthrough. The objects of our analysis are four different stories from various authors such as Hans Christian Andersen, Henrik Pontoppidan, and Jens Peter Jacobsen. These stories represent both romanticism and the naturalistic ideas of the modern breakthrough, and by lining them up next to each other and focusing on both likenesses and differences, it is our objective to find ideas and values that either evolves around or put aside the codex of Darwinism. Finally, we try to unveil the root of the changes which were happening to Danish literature at the time of the breakthrough of Darwinism and discuss whether these changes were directly caused by Darwinism or if they were just the effects of a much larger cultural and literary change of paradigm. And hereby we conclude that Darwinism was rather a catalyst than the primary force behind the changes in Danish literature at the time of naturalism and the modern breakthrough.<br/
Generation Etik?
Abstract This project examines how generations in literary history are made and clarifies which concepts and methods are used when gathering writers in a generation. The project contains a comparative analysis of ten works by poets said to be a part of Generation Ethics and three poets who are concurrent, but not included in the generation. The analysis arises out of themes that the writers have in common: family relations, nature, politics and gender and body. Also language, form and predication are examined. The analysis brings the project to a discussion of whether it is possible to write literature history as it unfolds and to incorporate a number of writers in a generation and exclude others. We have found that the name of Generation Ethics is problematic, but that it is possible to see contours of a generation. The analyzed works show that the writers altogether have committed “fadermord” on earlier mantras of how to write poetry and have several commonalities regarding the chosen themes, language and predication. Even though there are similarities and contours of a generation, the project however shows that the discipline of writing literary history is more complicated than gathering writers in generation, which can create a simplified image of the literature.Abstract This project examines how generations in literary history are made and clarifies which concepts and methods are used when gathering writers in a generation. Other agents in the employment service – A case study of the outsourcing principles of Copenhagen municipality This project examines how outsourcing principles in Danish employment policies are manifested in other agents’ employment services, and which consequences this has for the employment options of unemployed academics. The research question is examined using the county of Copenhagen as a critical case. The project uses an induct approach, in which tender documents from the latest tenders of the county of Copenhagen and three interviews with unemployed academics are used as the central empirical data of the project. Firstly it is examined how the employment system has developed since 1990 and how the use of outsourcing has emerged. Three fundamental principles are identified: Outsourcing should lead to specialisation, efficiency and social disciplining. Using an understanding based on new-institutional theory, the outsourcingprinciples can be seen as rational myths, which make sense in a new public management thinking. The three identified principles are used consistently in the project as the basis of thematising and analysing the empirical data. This is with the aim of discovering how the principles affect other agents’ employment services; and thereby what the unemployed academics’ chances of reemployment are. In this analysis of the latest tender conditions by the City of Copenhagen, it appears that the outsourcingprinciples have consciously been included in the writing of the tender conditions. Furthermore it is possible to trace a decoupling of the specialisation in the employment services and of the purchase of capacity, as well as a decoupling of the policyproducing module, the authority-module and the action-oriented workmodules. Hereafter it is analysed how deeply the outsourcingprinciples have been institutionalised with the agents. It is concluded that Akademikernes have primarily seen regulative and normative institutionalisation, whereas a deeper cognitive institutionalisation can be seen with Ballisager. This difference can be explained using the understanding of the difference between the two organisations which are respectively an unemployment fund and a private company; thereby using the understanding of the differences in expectations and pressure from the outside world. Finally the investigation includes an analysis of whether the requirements of the unemployed are being met by the services offered by other agents. Based on the inter-views with the unemployed, we can conclude that they find specialisation and self-responsibility important in the process of finding a job. The unemployed support the outsourcingprinciples about specialisation and social regimentation. There is, however, not a foundation for concluding that the unemployed find that outsourcing requires these principles. It is concluded that there is a decoupling between goals and results. This decoupling is seen at Ballisager, which claims to be specialised, even though the unemployed see them as lacking in specialisation. Furthermore it is concluded that the unemployed view the outsourcing as a means of increasing capacity rather than quality, and therefore they do not find outsourcing to be a logical solution. Finally it is concluded that the requirements which seek to legitimise the rational myths of outsourcing and secure social regimentation, may limit the extent to which the goals of specialisation and efficiency are achieved.Other agents in the employment service – A case study of the outsourcing principles of Copenhagen municipality This project examines how outsourcing principles in Danish employment policies are manifested in other agents’ employment services, and which consequences this has for the employment options of unemployed academics. Auschwitz - Overlevelse i systemet
The project investigates survival in concentration camps during Second World War. The project describes how the camps were structured and how the system worked in praxis. It takes point of departure in the books Of Blood and Hope by Samuel Pisar, Mans search for meaning by Viktor Frankl and If this is a Man and The Drowned and the Saved by Primo Levi. The analysis is focused on their survival strategies in conditions to different aspects such as age, profession and background and the paper answers what the different aspects meant for their survival strategies. The project discusses the prisoner’s view of the system of Auschwitz, and Zygmunt Bauman explains how it was possible to function and how the Nazi’s maintained the structure by manipulating the prisoners way of act. Freud’s psychoanalytic theory and Viktor Frankl’s logo therapy helps understanding how and why the prisoners acted the way they did in the concentration camps. The project investigates survival in concentration camps during Second World War.
Combined DFT and DEMS investigation of the effect of dopants in secondary zinc‐air batteries
Zinc–air batteries offer the potential of low‐cost energy storage with high specific energy, but at present secondary Zn–air batteries suffer from poor cyclability. To develop economically viable secondary Zn–air batteries, several properties need to be improved: choking of the cathode, catalyzing the oxygen evolution and reduction reactions, limiting dendrite formation and suppressing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Understanding and alleviating HER at the negative electrode in a secondary Zn–air battery is a substantial challenge, for which it is necessary to combine computational and experimental research. Here, we combine differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the fundamental role and stability when cycling in the presence of selected beneficial additives, that is, In and Bi, and Ag as a potentially unfavorable additive. We show that both In and Bi have the desired property for a secondary battery, that is, upon recharging they will remain on the surface, thereby retaining the beneficial effects on Zn dissolution and suppression of HER. This is confirmed by DEMS, where it is observed that In reduces HER and Bi affects the discharge potential beneficially compared to a battery without additives. Using a simple procedure based on adsorption energies calculated with DFT, it is found that Ag suppresses OH adsorption, but, unlike In and Bi, it does not hinder HER. Finally, it is shown that mixing In and Bi is beneficial compared to the additives by themselves as it improves the electrochemical performance and cyclic stability of the secondary Zn–air battery
Smart Calibration of Excavators:An ESGI54 Project from MIKROFYN
Excavators dig holes. But where is the bucket? The purpose of this report is to treat four different problems concerning calibrations of position indicators for excavators in operation at concrete construction sites. All four problems are related to the question of how to determine the precise geographic and/or site-relative position of a given excavator and its bucket. However, our presentations and solutions to the problems can, nevertheless, be read and studied in any order and independently of each other. This also implies and induces a gentle warning to the reader: The {\em{notation}} need not be consistently transferable from one section to another
