Multispace Office. Implications of Work Environment Choice for Organizational Innovation
12 S.Work environment choice and change are important but still largely underestimated managerial decisions not considering the long-term impact of the choice made on the organization. This paper presents findings from an empirical study based on an online-survey of work environment experts, both on the supply-side and on the demand-side in Germany (n=1,067). The results suggest that there is a type of office environments - the so-called multispace office - that from an organizational development perspective is in many ways superior to all other office types. If there are a range of different spatial options available in the workspace, and if all employees can use these options on a flexible basis, the working environment provides a significantly higher support function to the organization. Consequently, the choice of the work environment has implications on the implementation of organizational innovations
Organizational innovation - a matter of concurrency
8 S.According to the OECD, organizational innovation is the implementation of a new organizational method, e.g. in the firm's workplace organization, but literature suggests that it is still widely unresolved on how to innovate the knowledge work organization in companies. Based on the analysis of twenty in-depth interviews with German managers in charge of work organization in their respective companies, this paper formulates a hypothesis that for the innovation of the work organization to be successful it requires a special sequence in the introduction of new organizational practices and therefore a special innovation management approach. Specifically, results presented here suggest that technology-related aspects of organizational innovations should not lag behind human-related aspects of work organizational innovations. A concurrent innovation method - by altering both dimensions simultaneously - might be even the most promising approach to organizational innovation
Spaces for creativity and innovation in two established organizations
S.288-298Organizational work environments are increasingly strategically designed to support creativity and innovation processes, although a consistent theoretical frame for such an endeavour has not been developed yet. Creativity- and innovation-oriented design of work environments requires an understanding of the principles of the underlying processes and their spatial implications. Both creativity and innovation processes are complex and display in different phases convergent and divergent characteristics. The processes are dependent on both individual and group effort. In this article these dimensions are discussed from a theoretical perspective and are used for evaluating the two cases presented here. The first case, the Interactive Creativity Landscape as integral part of the Fraunhofer Office Innovation Center in Germany has been designed interpreting the convergent and divergent phases of creative processes. The second case, the Learning Garden of a Scandinavian financial institution has been designed having de Bono's procedure in mind. The article concludes with the suggestion that increasingly organizations will offer diversity for spatially supporting creativity and innovation processes; solutions will be manifold but will follow certain principles - some of which are discussed here.14Nr.
